Speaking from personal experience in Washington State: it is extremely difficult to get help removing or rehabilitating the person posing a threat. Especially if that person seems rational or otherwise lucid. Even if they confess their desires to cause harm, unless there is photographic evidence or some other sort of physically tangible proof it is unlikely they'll receive proper care involuntarily. It sucks to know someone is a genuine threat and to know that those designated to help likely cannot.

My heart, thoughts and prayers go to Geneva's family, and to the mother of this monster. It must've broke his mother's heart that he had committed this heinous crime, especially when she had begged and pleaded for her son to be committed, so he can receive the proper treatment. I hope and pray that Geneva's resting peacefully in her eternal slumber, and watching over her family and friends.

I can't help but wonder if he'd actually gotten the help that he obviously needed early on, if it would have actually kept him from murdering, or would it have just delayed the inevitable?? His poor mom... seems that she did everything humanly possible to get him some attention, only to have her efforts thwarted at every turn. What's the point of having a "system", if it's so broken it can no longer do any good?? Can't imagine how awful she must have felt when she learned of his arrest for murder. Her husband deserted her, her daughter died, & then her son loses what little grip he had on reality & kills people. Now she's left with no one. What an awful way for a mother to have to live out her golden years. Very sad. As for him, he better not ever get released... I don't think it would ever be safe to take that chance.

In southern California there's been numerous murders committed by homeless people with mental issues and drug problems. One happened in a restaurant in front of the man's daughter. There isn't enough done to make these people get help because it's "violating" their civil rights.

@@jr2904 I knew a schizophrenic man who was often in trouble w law due to his erratic behavior & skewed thinking (didn't take his meds regularly). Finally, a judge ordered that he get a shot 1x/ month called "Invega" (sound similar to 'invasive', right?). This took away his right of refusal, essentially violating his civil rights. I was concerned about this as it sets precedent. But he did much better after. Fewer incidents of screaming & fighting the voices all night long, much less delusional, was never again picked up by the cops for the remainder of his lifetime. This was in New York state. So many of these stories consist of the parents turning their heads away from their childrens' mental issues. But sadly, this mother knew the danger, tried several times to get him the proper help and was sadly let down. Everyone touts that if you "see something, say something" While this is very true and should be done. The frustrating part, is that sometimes people try and try to say something and the system completely lets them down laying the groundwork for tragedies.

It's telling that he actually had a bit of success in that first supportive group home instead of complete rebellion and then when he was uprooted again it went downhill again. It seems like he actually had a chance to quell the violence he had brewing if he had stability and structure during those formative years. Accommodated with psychiatric visits and medication it might have been a very different James as an adult. What he did was absolutely horrific and the person who committed that crime may very well never be able to cross back into society. But it honestly seems like he didn't necessarily have to become that person.

F*ckin infuriating how preventable this was; There are cases where people WANT to be vicious, murderous and vile, but no one in this case wanted that, it seemed everyone was just begging for help. How many incidents, indicators or attempted murders did authorities need to see before taking this man’s mental health issues seriously? He was clearly incapable of controlling his demons without intervention, yet he was continually kept from the help and support he desperately needed. “What took you so long” says it all - if police and medical professionals had listened to his mothers pleas, acknowledged the red flags and noted the dangerous nature of James’s actions from the start, so many people could have been saved in this unbelievably tragic case.

This repeated refusal to take the threats and actual actions of such distured people is really criminal, and for too long these people have been getting away from abdicating their responsibility to society. Families of victims need to start banding together and suing the legal and psychiatric institutions. As for people like Jim.....They know what they're doing.
