The Twisted Metal TV Show Somehow Doesn't Suck... Mostly 

I truly believe that advertisers intentionally put the worst of shows and movies into the trailers just to get people talking.

11:37 I think there might have been a third option: they showed the worst scene to set expectations lower so that everyone was pleasantly surprised by what they were actually given!

Now if only it was playable.

It was probably in a weird place where Sony likely didn't care enough about the property so wasn't much meddling and the crew were able to make the show they want.

I was expecting some references to the games in this show, but I was legit impressed by how deep cut some of these references were. Like who was expecting Harold to be there? Or have Sweet Tooth pull out his TM3 outfit for his Vegas show? Or for characters like Flower Power and Granny Dread to show up?

Hey Bacon. It's probably something unique to point out but there /was/ a cancelled Twisted Metal game that was supposed to take place in a post apocalyptic scenario, it's possible the show is built upon that lost concept

I was surprised at how much I loved Sweet Tooth's character after his trailer gave me a bad feeling about the whole show. I also really liked that they gave a reason behind the name "Needles", since he used sowing needles on the dog and in his cell the newspaper called him Needles because of that.

I really hope the show gets big and they make another twisted metal and do it the right way

I do wish for Season 2 that they start off with a garage montage of each of the drivers modifying their cars for full combat to the point where they even start applying their signature weapons. Hell, even throwing in a little easter egg by having TM Head-On's menu music playing through a radio during the montage. I don't particularly agree with some of the character deaths, but I guess if you are going to have multiple drivers who pilot the same kind of vehicle, then one of them has to go. RIP to those people, I had hoped to see more of them or wish they somehow survived.

You can actually see love put into the project, the team worked with what they had, but they gave it their all and that's all we ask for people making video game movies and shows to just care.

Sweet Tooth in the series reminds me of Pennywise; both are forces of nature that will absolutely slaughter you given the chance, but also at least try to be funny while also terrifying you.

I know i'm probably wrong but i have a feeling Neve Cambell already won the tourney and she got her wish. That's why she wants someone else to do it for her this time. She is a grown up and mature version of Raven.

Ive loved twisted metal for 25+ years but i was never very fond of Black. I appreciate the blending of characters from all eras of twisted metal and i really had no problem with them altering the character portrayals & relationships. Im glad they didnt just stick to black or (2012) for the setting and story.

"HAROLD, WHAT DID YOU DO, YOU KILLED EVERYONE!" Best comedic bit in the show followed by, "Jack and coke." "Why is it crunchy?" "Must be all the coke."

When they introduce Calypso do you prefer they keep him grounded in reality or exactly like he is in the games?

I like that they gave us a story, and a solid base that will be built in further seasons. Everyone had their chance to grow, flesh out, and eventually discover who they are. I especially loved Twister, and Flower Power. Was ultra sad over the convey scene, so good.

I love how the show feels episodic but most episodes have impact on the finale.

Honestly, the humour didn’t feel forced to me at all. I love this show. Only problem i had was a few scenes with bad cg. Overall im really excited for season 2

As someone who wasn’t really familiar with Twisted Metal before your videos. I had such a fun time watching this series. Anthony Mackie and the cast really elevated the show in ways I believe other performers wouldn’t have. It was that good cheese I needed in my diet. I hope they’re working on a new game in the near future, I will definitely purchase it. 13:49

This is one of those shows i knew nothing about and binged in one sitting simply after someone mentioned it to me. Despite all of it's shortcomings, mainly scarcity of car combat, i've had way more fun than i thought i will.

Goes to show that there is always a way for something to turn out to be good and can't be inherently impossible, no matter how unlikely it may seem.

The torture scene actually reminds me of a specific section from a book called Eric which is apart of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. This is an explanation: "Torture doesn't work, so hell has actually been designed along lines we can all identify with: the grey-faced nightmare of interminable and infernal red tape and the mindless bureaucracy that suffocates every last hopeful thought and replaces eternity with an infinite miserable wait for nothing to happen. Souls are being forced - not to roll rocks up hills (a la Roundworld's Sisyphus) or be bereft of food and water (as Tantalus was) - but to sit through every last codicil and sub-paragraph of the rules pertaining to Health and Safety. All 40,000 volumes of them..." So I thought it was humourous.

it started with a heavy dose of cheese but gradually became enjoyable seeing how they are slowly working up to a tournament so i am invested for now but still on guard hoping it wont fail like the witcher

My main issues were how some characters were portrayed, at least the ones that seemed in-name only (Preacher, Mr. Slam, and any officer that wasn’t Agent Stone), but those were all fairly minor. While I do prefer JS Gilbert’s voice for Needles, Arnett is definitely a close second for me, plus the latter’s voice does fit the tone of the show better than the former’s anyway. It was a bit jarring to see Needles with arguably his most recognizable look with the zaniness of his earliest incarnations, but both Arnett and Samoa Joe make it work.

I am so happy that this show turned out to be good. Me and my friends went into it expecting a “so bad it’s good” show. It needed up just being good. Which was a pleasant surprise.

i cant believe i am hyped to see a twisted metal tv show for season 2

Gotta say, it's interesting to watch this instead of the HBO Last of us show. Not because it's bad, but because for the Last of us you can literally play the game and notice some small changes from the story where to Twisted Metal where the lore is no existence you can literally do anything with it. Hell the show's concept might be from the cancelled Twisted Metal Apocalypse game.

Let me just say, Mike and Stu were my favorite characters and I'm surprised that the show gave those two so much characterization considering what they were like in the games (now that I think about it, a lot of the Twisted Metal 3 characters got treated good, or at the very least got more screen time than TM4 characters who had Cameos).😏

I think it's a giant pilot for season 2. I like it, but I kept my expectations stupid low for one of my favorite franchies. Cause I thought about the story thing as well!

I liked the show. And I thought Quiet and John Doe had pretty good chemistry. I’m really hoping for a season 2 🤞 Btw, I hope Cole Young gets his spine ripped out in the sequel. He doesn’t belong in the tournament!

It's easily a mixed bag, some stuff lands hard and well, others flop and fart into the wind. Any scene with Sweet Tooth is generally the pinnacle height that the show reaches. Whilst he is the mascot of the franchise, he also embodies the chaotic apathy (I assume) older fans of the series resonate with and darker humour I personally wanted. The rest of the show is a little off-brand but enjoyable. It feels too on the nose at times, but serviceable. It was more happy go lucky Mad Max than Twisted Metal, but hey, I fucking love Mad Max and this worked in it's own off-beat way. For me what will make this season worth existing, is if Season 2 is actually solid, it's the tournament that we really want to see. Whilst this season could've been better and a more gritty Death Race style TV show, I will happily consider it the worthwhile world-building, character developing journey if Season 02 delivers.

I found the first half of the first season to be slow to get started, but I think what they setup has potential for a great second half and even future seasons. It reminded me of many anime series I have seen.

I don’t just hope they play Dragula, I hope Rob Zombie is in the wastelands with his Dragula. Obviously, Sherri Moon-Zombie will be there as well

I binge watched the show as soon as it came out and i loved it and i Am very excited for season 2 Especially Since Doll face and mr grimm will be making appearances

I was smiling ear-to-ear on the final episode car battle also. To the point I felt like I must look weird. Glad it wasn't just me.

I was telling buds it was more of a fallout show with twisted metal characters. New Vegas, new San Francisco, new Chicago. That being said overall I dug it, especially what they did with sweet tooth.

Honestly I've never even played Twisted Metal but the way you talk about it all is so interesting.

All of us were skeptical but ended up enjoying the show as well as want another season. 😂 I want a new game too.

I loved this show for many reasons, the cast, the characters, the references. I felt like it really resonated with me in the sense of it wasn't trying to directly emulate the game but still included many references that I was able to understand, mainly since I have been binging vids from people like you. I was a joy to see what they did with the most iconic character and how they were able to not only work with how his character would be presented but I believe they casted him perfectly. I feel as if many expected the show to be just like the games despite the games not being entirely linear, and anyone who didn't expect as such probably didn't care for the constant tonal shift with there being one serious scene one moment and the next is entirely goofy. Either way i cannot wait for season 2.

Honestly, yeah, I hated the idea of it, but I watched it today, and it's actually good. The first episode sucks but it gets better by episode, Sweet Tooth's performance scene killed me, and I slapped my meat hands together for him

I finished watching the show after being engrossed into it for a week. I absolutely loved it, it was the right amount of shclocky cheesiness with a little bit of dramaticness that Twisted Metal 1 and 2 were known for. The references to the games were really cool and I was excited for that season 2 hook. Hope that season 2 does come out eventually.

i bashed the show when it was announced, but now that ive warched it i love it. i dont like how they changed some of the characters for relatibility or to fit their universe, but it all starts to fit near the middle and end.

I need needles to drive roadkill and have a moment of sanity come to him and then him just flip right back to crazy ole needles. That would be a great Easter Egg. I also hope we get sweet tooth crashing the tournament like a boss character.

A good TV adaptation of friggin’ Flower Power was the absolute last thing I was expecting from this series. I’ve gotta check this out.

I think the show was dope, especially considering how much of the world and characters they had to establish. Hopefully we get a season two 🔥🔥👀

I haven't seen the show yet, but this review really has interested in it and its potential second season. With that said, I wonder if Dark Tooth will appear given Sweet Tooth's origins. Although if that happens, I wonder how it'll look. The giant mega truck, the one with the freaky teeth, a mix of both perhaps?

I mean you can tell the people involved had fun with the show. You can tell it was low budget but they used that to replicate what a show in the 90s would look like

That Barbie Girl/DMV scene is now a viral hit and truly as a 90’s baby the combination of that song being blasted with having to fill out forms in a DMV is a true existential crisis. Also the show is a comedy so yes there are a lot of jokes.

I need to add, the Spanish translation (Latin American Spanish) is quite good. Looking forward to season 2 and more characters in the series.

I enjoyed the TV show and I truly believe there will be a season 2 and almost everyone will be back for the tournament including Sweet Tooth because there is no normal way to kill off the mad clown unless you’re Calypso.

To be 100% honest, I was right there with you in the preview trailer and teaser. I was not happy with how things were portrayed. But I found myself enjoying the show more and more and by the end, I am now super hyped for a second season. I loved every scene Sweettooth was in and damn it he wasn’t just fun to watch. Solid break down of the show. I was actually waiting to hear what you had to say about it. Good job man.

Can you feel it in the air?… Video game adaptations NO longer have the immediate reaction of being seen as “unsatisfactory” Now there is a balance.

I knew the show was gonna be something fun. But man, going into it I was not expecting it to be that good. Granted its not perfect. But for what it accomplished, it does a great job. Biggest shocks for me was seeing certain stuff from the games like Harold, Flower Power, Pit Viper and etc. Like seeing those was proof that this show was made by the fans. Also, can we appreciate how characters like Mike and Stu are given additional development from their original counterparts? That was a treat to see. And Sweet Tooth in the show is a lot of fun. I can go on and on about what they did right in this show. I hope that the show gets a Season 2. I wanna see how it can be furthered and where they can improve certain aspects that didn't work in the first season.

I'm subscribing just for 21:08. Clearly this season was a proof of concept. Peacock green lit a season with a smaller budget to see how it went and in Season 2 we'll have a much bigger budget to get much bigger car battles. Hence why they set it up in the final episode. Very much agree with how you said people expected a darker tone because of Twisted Metal Black. That was the only TM game I really played but I knew very well the other entries were more camp and wasn't at all surprised they went with a comedy.

I was really disappointed with how they represented certain characters as either completely throwaway or literally have them there in name only for no other reason than to be recognized such as Mr. Slam, Granny Dread, the Roberts', Flower Power, Amanda Watts, etc

I went in with no expectations because I really didn't know how they were gonna make this work. The trailers did not help, in fact I agree with Moistcritkal that it seems like they intentionally picked the worst scenes possible for the trailers. I'm wondering if that was intentional, now, though. Because it threw everyone off into theories, and they really did the most faithful and straightforward thing they could: they took lore from every game (including the Small Brawl easter egg), and gave us essentially a Roadkill origin story AND a new character, both of whom were written near-perfectly. Not all of the jokes landed. Yes the budget showed in a few places, but overall I legitimately think this may be my favorite video game adaption yet. They managed to somehow hit EVERY aspect that made EVERY game fun or interesting.

The show was honestly amazing. I do think it catered more toward the fans of the franchise especially with the teaser at the end of the season. The whole season was filled with the little nuggets where a fan would go "ohhhh! it's that!" and I think they did a good job in incorporating some of the stories of the characters to the show. It's hard to do especially with the nature of the Twisted Metal games where there are technically multiple endings. With that aside, the characters' interactions and the development of John's and Quiet's relationships made it feel like an actual show where you can connect with the characters. 8.5 / 10 show. super excited for season 2.

It definitely has a rocky start but gets better as it goes along, and even manages to capture some essence of the games! Interested to see how season 2 goes

The way to go about making a true twisted metal series or movie is you have to make five to nine solo episodes on the most popular main characters and then have the final series or movie be the tournament so everybody gets their own backstory

I haven't seen anyone honestly hating on it, this adaption was incredible! It was funny it was action packed the story was great and emotional, I really loved it and S2 is going to be amazing! Anthony Mackie is the perfect protagonist

I kinda disagree with the last of us vibes, mostly cause to me, it gave me borderlands vibes cause some of the kinda nutty people and gangs, only thing missing is the sci-fi aspect but yeah, like, this is what i'd want out of a Borderlands movie/series, kinda silly but not Borderlands 3 silly. It even checks out considering Borderlands also has plenty of car stuff. If the rumoured Borderlands adaptation sucks there's at least this, in a way.

I love when they incorporated the quake rumble zone theme in the song played in the fight scene in the bar

My favorite gag was: Sweet Tooth - "HAROLD!? WHY Did you kill everybody?" *pans to Harold with the gun.* It was dumb but damn it got me.

This show was a HUGE surprise. Great point of view, BTW. The character development took time, but paid tribute to the series.

At least it's not a spit in the face like the Halo show was.

finished it and i LOVED IT. i haven’t played the games but i understand the story, and recognized a lot of characters and easter eggs. im super excited for season 2 and seeing the tournament that all the games are about. Really hope we see more Sweet Tooth because for me he was the absolute best.

I really enjoyed the show and look forward to season 2 if it happens. I thought the way they left certain things unexplained was really neat. With season one acting as an introduction to Twisted Metal I hope the world expands. For example, how cool would it be to discover that Calypso has already granted wishes? There were a few strange things in season that could be explained as past winners wishes. Either way I will patiently await season 2.

I'd say Twisted Metal is to The Last of Us what Nobody was to John Wick. Critically it's not as good but it's still a good time. If they ever made a season 2 or part 2 to either of those things I'd watch it and most likely enjoy it more than the first movie or season. It'd be really hard for the writers and directors to fuck it up when really they only have to beat a score of like 7/10.

One thing I don't see enough people talking about is how Stephanie Beatriz's performance(s) carried a lot of the episodes...she killed it.

Raven being a leader is sort of a nod to her Lost City bio where she's regarded as a "Hero" of harbor city.

Just finished watching it, 7/10, good start. They did the best they could with car combat, i hope they get a bigger budget so tht we can have more car combat and hopefully a season 2.

I felt almost exactly as u did. I've been a huge TM fan since I was like 6, even have Sweet tooths mask tattooed on my arm. And my number 1 highest worry was them making him too jokey. The casino trailer made me lose all hope of this being good. But thank God it's only that 1 bad scene with sweet tooth and all the rest are gold. Also somehow Quiet ended up being my favorite character!😊

I eagerly await the time I sit down to watch this series. I was actually enamored by the first Sweet Tooth teaser cuz I was worried he'd be the overly edgy version of Needles from Black and 2012 so seeing the menacing camp was a huge relief (plus them bringing up the concept of the drivers fighting outside of their car is a nice touch). Plus I liked the setup and payoff from the first trailer showing John's interest in pop music and that coming back to save his skin in the Sweet Tooth teaser. Crediting both Arnett and Samoa Joe gave me hope that this production team cared about what they were doing and who they were working with.

Woohoo! You did a video about it! So glad you liked it mostly. At first I kinda disliked it in the first episode also. But once I let go and just embraced it, it was great. Not perfect of course, sometimes I felt a bit cheese filled in good ways and in bad ways. Which kinda makes sense as the games really expect you to embrace the chaos and weirdness that is TM! So happy season 2 will be deathmatch-style stuff! We'll have to see how they handle it! They managed to pull off a decent game to tv adaption. Part of me kinda hopes the episodes were just a bit longer. But in the end they felt about right which is not something I normally say as I hate tiny episodic stuff. Season 2 will also make or break the show.

I grew up playing TM1 and TM2, so this franchise is sentimental to me. I didn't watch the show, because I expected NBC to ruin it. I finally took the bait and gave it a shot, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's actually a good TV show and it includes Twisted Metal stuff. I find that shocking, honestly. I do hope Mr. Slam returns with his front-end loader and I was very excited to see that glimpse of Axle without his wheels yet. That could be a goldmine of drama right there.

Yeah while I would have preferred a tone more similar to Black, I understand and respect the choice to go for a more silly and camp vibe that's more reflective of the series as a whole. I found myself smiling during most of the show which was not something I was expecting at all.
