What a terribly disappointing video game. Join me as a breakdown why it sucks, and why maybe it kinda doesn't suck. Stay tuned for more content on this channel!
Mafia III made the mistake of being an easily digestible free roam game in a game series that was not an easily digestible free roam game series. It’s mediocre on its own, and horrible compared to Mafia 1 and Mafia 2
@ihavenothoughts well with mods the game becomes amazing since I got a realism mod that adds the mechanics from the older mafia games into Mafia 3 so police actually react to you breaking traffic laws and they don't shoot you unless you have a gun or you start shooting. Plus they do arrest you technically speaking but they knock you over and knock your ass out when they try to arrest you which is an instant kill to you. Plus now gang members walk the streets instead of I'm their hideouts and they all use different weapons now like AKs, M16s, silenced 1911s, Auto shotguns, they use everything against you. The mods for Mafia 3 make it ten times better
Man, I thought Mafia 3 would play out in the same formula as the first two games the first time I played it. It was just so repetitive with what you had to do to progress the story. The setting of the game was nice and all. But other than that, it was just so disappointing.
The personality thing with Lincoln is debatable because there is a section where you see his journal entries throughout the story and he comments on everything but I can see where your coming from
That's kind of lazy, though. Instead of him expressing himself like a human, just read his diary. The entries don't say much anyway, it's essentially him recounting the events or sentiments we were already aware of "Burke is a drunk lunatic", "Dixie pimps are mfs who deserve to die", etc.
Kinda, it's a bit sparser than the RDR2 journal but he comments on everything like even health upgrades he mentions Vito sending him to a named mob doc that checks him up but doesn't really describe what the doc does to increase his health.
Idk why but I enjoyed the missions and how simple they were so I didn’t mind that there were a ton of them I actually enjoyed grinding all the side missions. Try to stealth as much as I could then just go gorilla with the shotty on whoever was left . The setting did help bc New Orleans is my favorite city and maybe bc I was stoned outta my mind I just loved this game. That being said, I didn’t like Mafia 1 and never played 2 so do with that what you will
@@ihavenothoughts i always defended mafia 3 i just think there should be more character customizations like in gta, side missions were hella fun tho it would be more great if there were more story missions
Donovan isn't a psychopath, he is just used to dehumanizing and killing people as a war veteran, much like Lincoln. And they were both killing criminals and mercenaries, not civilians. As mentioned, he is carefree, derisive, and cynical. What was he supposed to do in the bar, for instance? Some guy was killed, no need to cry about it, or avoid taking his cigar. Overall, I don't think he was doing awful things and laughing it off (that would imply he was coping with unpleasant experiences through laughter). What made him dislikeable is the final scene in the church, where he was immature and extremely rude to father James, and desecrated the temple.
Dude I just finished watching all of your videos and I'm only just now noticing how many views and subscribers you have. Your level of quality is truly great, your jokes and references are hilarious and I got every single one. You really have a talent for making videos and I hope to see more from you at some point.
Thanks so much! It’s been 3 years but it looks like I’m gonna have some extra time starting around February and I’m planning on making some new content then
They squandered the era and the classic sound track that went along with it on a mediocre game. Thats how i felt in the first 30 minutes and thats how i felt when id finished the story.
it's always nice to hear someone with a different opinion especially if it's betrayed in a thought out, entertaining way. I loved Mafia 3 but some of the points you made were good( I like stones unturned DLC but it was a bit too wacky and would have worked better as an extended Vietnam flashback)and this has me wanting to see more content from you
Everything about this video is fantastic, I haven't laughed like that in a long time! And it's all true too. Like the melee combat, it's a huge letdown from Mafia ll. You can no longer duck or slip punches, what kind of a fight is that? And the radio stations, there isn't a one bita difference between them like in Mafia ll, expect for the name. What's the point of having 3 stations if they all play exactly the same set of songs? A few times they played say Fortunate Son on all 3 stations concurrently. I hear the familiar guitar intro (after hearing it about half a million times in other games I can stand it no more 😖I switch but there's no escape so I'm forced to turn the radio completely off. And no garage, seriously? After 15 year old GTA lll, Vice City and San Andreas, a major open world driving AAA game doesn't have at least ONE garage? Unbelievable
The Glitches even in 2024 make this game unplayable. Yes, LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE. I encountered a glitch where I was upgrading Sammy's Bar and the game cut to black. (supposedly because it was trying to start a mission but failed) I was stuck in an infinite black loading screen and so I quit the game and it spawned me back in, but every time it spawned me in I would fall under the map and would be unable to move. It practically broke the game where I lost all my progress permanently. Also, every so often the game would freeze for a few seconds and then resume.
I thought the game freezing for a few seconds was a fault of my console, or perhaps the disc was scrached (I bought the game used), interesting to see others bump into this same issue...
I hope mafia 4 is any near to mafia 1 and 2 just have the vibe and bonding with characters to the story, not just killing change the chapters missions sometimes that’s what mafia 3 missed but like he says mafia 3 has only good Cutscenes and acting, many confuse with story and story is okay for me, vito was good addition but didn’t like the kill him option but I can see Tommy fans liking that and that is fair but it don’t fit after all vito has been through, with Joe I like he is alive but they didn’t address how and that is disappointment, I trust new leader Nick baynes he is making mafia 4 and it’s in early stages hopefully we get a trailer this year
There's rumors it'll be taking place in Sicily before Mussolini rose to power. My guess is that it'll end with the main character either leaving or staying in Sicily after Mussolini comes to power
I’m currently playing this and the one thing that most bothers me is the lack of an ACTUAL garage. For such a car centric game it’s weird to me that you can’t keep cars you steal. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy some of the cars in the preset menu but imo there’s realllly not much variety. There are some of the most iconic styled cars on the street. I WANT TO KEEP THEM! Not all of them, like in mafia 2 there was a garage limit which would be FINE for this game too. If there is a way to keep them that I don’t know about pleaseeee someone tell me.
At least the game spawns the last car you were driving, so i had one of the impalas with the engine out the hood most of the game. But i also found it really frustrating you couldnt keep cars or modify them.
The first go around when it first came out I beat it for the story because there were too many bugs to stick around and do other stuff. I bought the definitive edition later on to play the full experience with everything, and alot about it was still broken. I WAS enjoying myself until I ran into a really bad bug in the middle of the game where everything you do from that point on doesn't save. I couldn't finish Sign of the Times DLC either. Was a fun game though.
Trophies are glitched 🛑 I've been trying to obtain platinum for years now. 4 or more broken achievements due to the internal counter being broken/resetting upon closing/crashing the game. 2K GAMES don't care about their customers. I'm done after 11 playthroughs.
@@masido443 Every 6 months I try to achieve - Flipping 16 racket bosses, Max Respect with all 3 bosses. Killing all bosses & keeping one boss alive. 4 trophies plus more are known to others. The internal counter is broken.. Every time you close game or quit to main menu, the counters reset. You have to do it in one continuous playthrough without game crashing or quitting. You can put PlayStation in rest mode, and stay disconnected to the internet.
I liked Mafia 3 but I wish it had a similar structure to Far Cry 5. Less lieutenants to get through before the big bad, and having almost everything you do, from open world shenanigans to side missions, actually progressing each region towards a particular target instead of just specific quests that often have you do very similar objectives. There was too much of the grind in Mafia 3 that wouldn't be so bad if it didn't have the technical state that it does. But I like its characters and its story. And the twist on the formula of being a Mafia game about taking revenge on the mafia after two games of playing as part of the organization was something I appreciated, despite a bit of bloat that robbed some of minor characters of being fleshed out. And yeah, Joe showing up at the end is dumb kinda takes away from the impact of Mafia 2's ending AND Vito's side quest in 3.
I disagree. It is way too repetitive. That is for sure and ruins most of the game IMO. The story though is really really good and very satisfying to see through to the end. The characters are also awesome (especially Donovan). The gameplay isn't perfect but frankly I think the basic shooting combat is better than the rest of the series (including Mafia 1 remake). Maybe that's down to the guns being more modern but it also just feels more responsive to me than the rest. What does not get enough credit though is the driving. As a fan of simulation racing games, this has the best driving I have experienced outside of actual racing games. Especially when you get the faster cars in the game, IT IS SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cars actually behave relatively realistically compared to most open world games like this. Hell, I've played many actual racing games that didn't have driving nearly as good as Mafia 3's
Mafia 2 just might be my most favorite game of all time. The pain I felt lying to myself that Mafia 3 was good was unreal at Mafia 3s release. Its a game I'd prefer be forgotten, it kinda ruins the franchise in my opinion
8:36 I had this bug, Im pretty sure I deleted the game data or game itself and it fixed it. That or I had an older save in the cloud and I restarted from that point. Its hard to tell, but whenever you have these issues, trying to delete the game profile or game data (NOT save data) or the entire downloaded game on system can help. It can set you back hours, but way better than having to do a replay which most end up doing not knowing how to deal with a corrupted game
one of the strifes i had with the story, was to an extent with the Documentary style, i loved it, but i hated how the outcome of a mission was always pretty much sealed/spoiled with the whole "trial" thing going on with Donovan. Would've been nice if they kept the details scarce to give the player that layer of uncertainty. I also felt that we should've been able to have more stuff to do with our criminal organization, afterall we're building it up, why not be able to customize certain things etc..
28:00 OK, I agree with you on the whole "lincoln being too much of a badass" thing, badass characters don't really work in games like mafia. HOWEVER, a badass main character in a game CAN work, It IS possible for a main character in a game to BE a badass, just not in EVERY game, cause that would get boring afterwards.
Lincoln made this game seem like Assassin's Creed, among many other things. Meanwhile, the previous ones were about soldiers trying to achieve something in life.
That hypothetical old country mission was fucking great and i 1000 percent would play that mission call it somthing like "Old Counrty for Mob Men" perfect
I liked the lethal and nonlethal option you could have. Liked he was a big mfer and it showed by his gameplay. Dude was a powerhouse, his combat boots stomping audio was on point.
Too bad their are no shops. I think there should’ve been a features like us being able to eat at certain restaurants to regain health or buy clothes like you mentioned. This makes it a bigger deal when you cannot eat (or shop in this case) at certain places due to your race.
I like the idea of Mafia 3. 1960s New Orleans, and the protagonist, a black Vietnam veteran. The execution is where it fell short. I do find myself going back from time to time just to drive around and listen to music, but everything else is too repetitive. Having a great city like New Orleans and having nothing to do in it is pretty disappointing.
Mafia 3s gameplay is easily one of the worst out from super repetitive missions to unnecessary objectives and really bad glitches and bugs(seriously I used to wanna punch my tv every time a random NPC would jump into the street when I’m just turning right at an intersection) But yet this is still one of my all-time favorite games because all of the characters are super enjoyable, the writing is some of the best in the business. The actual kills are very satisfying and the story is a masterpiece and is probably my favorite out of the three.
id die for a red dead in the 40's-60's with mafia tied in with an open world! My dream game that will never happen sadly. Mostly because i'd see take-two being like NAH we already have a mafia series so it would be redundant.
@@ihavenothoughts Mafia 3 though has the same problem. My biggest gripe is that they mention Chicago and New York which kinda sucks, I liked that Lost Heaven and Empire Bay were stand ins for those cities.
@a.j.9359 I noticed that too, my assumption, at least when they mention Chicago, is that they’re talking about a real life incident and wanted to give it the appropriate weight, but still an odd choice. The GTA games have done this a handful of times too, weird
@@ihavenothoughts With GTA is a bit different I guess, as R* didn't plan ahead most likely and real life places got replaced with their GTA counterparts, as recently as Florida became Leonida. Mafia got their lore good until Mafia III, I'm mostly disappointed about the car brands making no sense, but the guns especially.
I enjoyed mafia 3, least favorite but I can still enjoy it. The thing I can enjoy the most in mafia 3 is the 60s driving Louisiana driving setting, although I prefer the mafia 2 driving style
Really??? I found the music to be heavily repetitive. The amount of times I heard "Palisades Park" made me vomit. Whomever programmed the music either mis-heard what YEAR they were programming for or they had NO CLUE what radio sounded like in 1968. First and foremost - they are all AM Stations and should be in MONO ONLY. Secondly, I don't believe they actually programmed the individual stations. You'll hear "King of the Road" or "Palisades Park"; two very Caucasian songs on the WBYU more Black oriented station. I believe there is only one music file and changing stations just jumps to a different point in time. Thirdly, they left out a LOT of musical acts of the time period that are very important. No Sly & The Family Stone, No Fifth Dimension, No Ray Charles, No Marvin Gaye, No Jackie Wilson, No Jimi Hendrix (only song used during title screen), No Wilson Pickett, No Stevie Wonder.... I mean, they had an opportunity to introduce a whole generation to Soul Music, to R&B and they blew it. Like you pointed out No Beatles, No Youngbloods, No Archies, No Monkees.... and when we'd established that there was No Elvis in Mafia 2, they go and retcon that by adding ONE Elvis song to Mafia 3, and they use a remix version that came out in the 90's. There's also another song they use from 1971 which title escapes me. Granted, they have a budget.... I understand that but the did an amazing job in Mafia 2 and the radio was nowhere as repetitive in Mafia 2. They also missed a HUGE opportunity for the "white" stations where they could have licensed some old Wolfman Jack shows and introduced kids to the Wolfman. His comedy and his style would've TOTALLY fit in with the Mafia 3 vibe in the bayou. Heck, even L.A. Noire licensed some old recordings of the Jack Benny program!! I'd just park the car and listen to Jack Benny. Who cared if someone was jumping off a building?? I hope Mafia 4 is successful. There probably won't be much need for licensed music. But if there is a Mafia 5 set in Las Vegas in the 1970's.... they'd better hire *ME* as Musical Director.
Dude you’re clearly an expert and you know way, way more than me, media like this generally never care about that level of accuracy but it would’ve been really cool if they had. And yeah, sounds like they should hire you as musical director, I wish these games would hold themselves to a higher standard of authenticity
The glitches are the worst part of this game. I’ve owned it for years, and couldn’t ever complete it since the game would not progress due to glitches. Years later, all this hype that they are doing for the definitive edition, and NOTHING has changed, it still crashes, freezes, blacks out, and pedestrians are still trying to commit insurance frad. I’m Grateful for the free dlc but what’s the point if your game still barely runs?
I bought it for $10 or whatever the psn sale. I'll say this game is fun if you play it for what it is. It is repetitive I admit every mission is a shootout but it's kinda fun especially the stealth kills. But if you want an open world game with plenty of activities you won't like this game. To enjoy Mafia 3 just go from mission to mission no free roam.
Great video, All of problems and good things with Mafia 3 was addressed perfectly. I played it 5 times and never finished it because i would lose interest. 34:35 My only problem was this statement. Calling open-world crime games 'Gta clones' or 'Gta Rip-offs' is what has killed the genre and gave Rockstar a monopoly which they have neglected for 10 years. For more details on why 'GTA clones' is a bad term i recommend Flippy's ''Ranting about "Grand Theft Auto Clones"
The first 2 games were master piece, and this game made me almost say "goodbye" to the franchise, repetetive shit game, bugs, and bad gameplay, there were similliar games like rdr 2,who made it "not" repetetive and good, dissapointment
For me I liked Mafia 3 but it wasn’t as good as the two Mafia games that came for it, for me I liked the story, Lincoln Clay and the other characters, the city, the music/soundtrack and the gameplay, but the game is very glitchy, I didn’t get the ownership bonuses in the DE version, the a graphics should’ve looked better and the missions are very repetitive but at the end of the day, I enjoyed this game despite its faults, I played it on Xbox One btw. 👍🏻
I always felt like in this game you play the parts where in Mafia II you would had loved playing most , i mean: Remember when in mafia II we saw that cutscene with that music "let the good times role" showing how vito and joe made it up to the hill? thats exactly the cut content we wanted to experience and they just pass it in a cutscene Meanwhile in Mafia III you get to do all that stuff but without the same feel, i dunno if u know what i mean.
It’s surprising they nerfed the cops if that’s how the other games were. These should be the hardest cops to take place in a video game consedering the context of mafia 3, the cops should be a huge theme, so imagine all of those laws from the first 2 games, plus possibly getting arrested just by looking at a cop funny for racial reasons I cannot get into without YT deleting my comment for no-no words. I mean this does happen with restaurants, but eh, you have nearly no reason to go to them in the first place.
Bro I know that part is cringe, that image with all the hashtags was just something from an article that was vaguely related to what I was talking about. Many people have asked about that, big regret.
@@ihavenothoughtsah fair enough, just seeing that screen with no context as to why it existed just made it seem a bit out of touch, but I understand now.
Mafia 3 : Great story Very ubisoft combat Mafia 1 Great story Rockstar like combat Im sad that m3 was made before the Remaster it had great potential to be a banger
I loved mafia 3 lol I didn’t have that many bugs in my playthrough. Don’t get me wrong it’s my least favorite one of the three but I still loved it. Also the punisher is my favorite character of all time so to say I am a fan is an understatement. This is the closest thing we will get to a punisher game.
I agree that as a mafia game its pretty bad however if you think of it as a spiritual successor of that amazing 2005 punisher game its great. Frank needs another edgy and gritty game.
I love this game. Especially when you just want to fuck shit up without thinking. But I respect everything you said. But I still loved every moment of it. Thank you for giving me a reason to replay it
Well…that was the point. You’re one man who has to take down an entire criminal organization to take out someone you have to exact revenge on. I think it was still repetitive, but the act of destroying a massive criminal organization with multiple layers is a repetitive gig to take up in many ways. Respect the view point, though.
Oh boy, wait till you go down the rabbit hole of all the stuff that was cut from Mafia 2. 2K released an unfinished game, repackaging it as a linear-story driver one rather than a open world game and people simply choose to believe it. Especially given how those 3 DLCs are just obvious stripped side-missions stuffed together, with little plot or idea behind them.
@@MadWatcher Is it though? Half of the stuff in the game serves no purpose, and it's called linear only due to the fact that the sandbox approach got botched. Mafia 3 however gets bashed for each region take-over being copy paste. Storywise is mafia 2 better, of course, but gameplay lacks.
I didn’t like it either. I should have, cause the music and the setting are really cool. My friends all liked it.. I just didn’t like it at all even after a few hours of playing.
