One of the inevitable, but frustrating things about being a beginner in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the reality of having your guard passed and then getting smashed for the remainder of the round.
While your guard is going to get passed a lot, it doesn't mean you have to get smashed. Putting some fundamental side control escapes into your arsenal will pay off huge. If you can escape side control and recover your guard, you can go back to playing offense. Even better, if you can escape side control and get on top, you can do some smashing yourself.
In this video, Rob teaches concepts for two specific side control escapes. One escape will help you retain guard and the other escape will help you come up to a single leg and end up on top.
