Marcelo Garcia: Escaping Side Control

3 Part Lesson -- Marcelo escapes from Side-Mount: When you opponent is holding you down in Side Control with a balanced approach, i.e. they are not laying too heavily/tightly over your centerline and therefore susceptible to a Bridge Sweep/Reversal you may not be able to recover your knee(s) inside to recompose guard due to them monitoring your hip closely with their far knee in Side-Control with Underhook & Head Control (Side-Mount, Cross-Sides (Top), Cross-Face. Protect your far-arm by keeping it strong and bent as a Frame against your opponent's neck/jawline; quickly keep it safe from any variations of Arm-Lock and don't waste any time advancing your defense. Connect your hands together in a joist and rock your legs or pop a bridge to help open up enough space to turn onto your side and pummel an Under-Hook. Apply another bridge coupled with your Under-Hook to make room for a belly-down turn-over entry onto a Single. You can finish the single from your knees, drive to the far-leg for a Cowboy-Double or Barzagar, or come up with the leg and finish from standing. Stay low on your opponent's knee as you turn onto your belly and build up your base before coming up to attack your opponent's Back/Side from the Coyote-Guard/Dog-Fight Position; otherwise, you run the risk of giving up the Mount or arriving on top inside a Triangle. [04:36] Use your near-side arm to help loosen your opponent's Cross-Face (aka Shoulder-of-Justice, et al.) and also prevent your opponent from using two hands to attack your far-arm before wedging it into safety as a Frame. Meanwhile, elevate both of your knees to block an easy path from Side-Control into Mount. If your opponent is keeping heavy against your chest and preventing you from creating enough room to pummel for and Under-Hook and turn onto your side, pummel your opposite hand inside and connect your hands again in a Frame/Joist. Employ a bridge to help push up and turn yourself onto your side, pushing at their biceps and pummeling for an Under-Hook; use the Under-Hook as a jack to throw your opponent away from defending their knee from your Single-Leg Reversal. You can feed your opponent's lapel/belt through their legs to amplify your effect on coming up and finishing the Single. [08:49] Oscillate your Bridge-Escape until a dissonance is generated inside the discursive feedback loop of control for your opponent; in other words, you may need to quake back and forth, alternating between the two major directions of your Bridge-Escape to disrupt your opponent's ability to correctly track, adjust, and retain the Side-Mount Position.

Who else remembers that classic elbow push escape video from years ago!!? That was one of the first bjj videos that really helped me through my initial stages as a white belt getting trapped under people! I remember I hit that escape on a purple belt in a different country, and he smiled and said “ah, you’ve watched that Marcelo Garcia escape video” and we both had a chuckle.

Just started training again and having a ridiculous hard time to escape side control. It's so frustrating, when im on top, ppl just roll me around, bench me up, do whatever they want, it's like im a feather. When im on the bottom, its like a building is on top of me and i have no strength to create any space with any of the arms. Their arm pits are stronger than my fucking legs so i cant create hip space either. Its a boomer man

Bruno Soares Rodrigues I like to use a philosophy I call strong point philosophy. I’m like 140 lbs but when big guys pass my guard, this just means that you analyze and figure out what grips or limbs are the ones giving the opponent the strength to close distance or the base so they don’t get rolled over. A pyramid will always fall if at least two sides get knocked down, humans are like that in the sense we have four limbs. Just go for the points/grips of strength or points that allows them to keep a base and remove them using leverage, be creative and keep putting yourself in those bad positions. It might take some time to develop the sequence of moves but eventually you’ll start seeing them sooner and being more deceiving with them and should be able to get out of these positions. I’ve been able to do so now with guys near the 240lbs weight on me, it wasn’t always the case and more so if they move to different positions, but one day at a time brother. Hope this was of some help, good luck in your journey!

@@AV9000x LOL!!! I once rolled with a big blue belt who said he felt he could pin Marcelo Garcia forever in side control because he was strong and he never saw Marcelo play a lot of half guard from being in side control. The blue belt was admittedly big and strong, but only weightlifting strong, not grappling strong. It seems he could never develop the connection to use all that muscle towards grappling techniques. So I choked his bitch ass with my feeble 150lbs.

Whenever I get into a bad position like being mounted, back taken, pinned and face a opponent with the same skill level I find it impossible to apply any techniques to reduce the risk of submition any body else feel the same?
@stevenconnolly28
@stevenconnolly28 3 года назад
I found that I was panicking when being mounted and pressure being put on my chest and my face smothered a bit. So I picked the biggest guys and when put in mount during a roll I concentrate on getting used to tight spaces with not much air or room to move. I find now I am more relaxed to work my moves.

Any tips on "getting low" on the opponent's leg as you go belly down for the single?
@Zach-lv5qs
@Zach-lv5qs Год назад
4:04 Marcelo bridges to obtain the underhook (crucial) 4:08 Marcelo bridges to recreate space for his hips. From there, it is essentially a shrimp. The essence of shrimping is to unflatten your hips. Keeping the bottom leg straight, you can "roll" your bottom hip (the right side/leg of Marcelo in this case). Marcelo made it a point to note that the single is being immediately obtained to prevent any momentum he can garner to step over for mount.

Extra movement. Letting the action come all the way up, just to get back down. But I guess if you really trust your wrestling, that might be the move.

I think you should of explained the importance of transitioning your hand/forearm from his back to under his chin better than just saying "it needs to be strong infront of his face" - the guys head and body weight will be stronger than your forearm. One suggestion that my black belt coach taught me was to bridge towards the guy to create a small gap to transition your hands/forearm from the back to under his throat. Otherwise you run the risk of getting americana'd, especially if the guy is in a static position, quick and putting alot of pressure on you. However, good video nonetheless, the single leg is actually one of my favourite escapes.
