I feel really sorry for Richard for losing Anne, he may not have been a pleasant king, but at least he loved his wife.

I love reading the comments on these videos to see if others are as fascinated with the history of England and astonished by the fact that there are still ACTUAL documents and even clothes that these royals wrote with their own hand or wore on their bodies have been so well preserved for 400,500,600 years!! Then there comes Richard II ... known as one of the greatest if not the greatest Tyrannical King of England. Seriously what the hell is wrong with this kid? how can he not inherit even an ounce of his father or grandfather's good trait? WTF?

Wat Tyler was praised in the Soviet textbooks on European history among the first forerunners of the Communist ideas. He was 40 when killed.

It's safe to say that This character is where the inspiration for Joffrey Lanister comes from.

I hope I someday get to visit Britain and see some of these historical locations. It must be Interesting to live in a place with all this Medieval history around on a daily basis! Most of the oldest stuff in America goes back to the 1700s.

People from Archbishop Sudbury’s home town recovered his spiked head and brought it home. His mummified head is still there, in a cupboard in a church. I enjoy this documentary, though I think just a bit of information about just how important John of Gault was would be have been helpful.

Far too many significant things omitted. Henry of Bolingbroke's father John of Gaunt is barely mentioned. He was the the most powerful noble in England throughout Richard's reign and a huge influence . s proven warrior and politician he was a sophisticated man who was a moderating influence on both Richard and those who opposed him. Unfortunately in the early part of Richard's reign he spent a lot of time in Spain pressing his second wife's claim to the throne of Castile. Not mentioned were John Wycliffe [ translated the bible into English ] and Geoffrey Chaucer the poet. This reflected the fact that English was taking over from French at the top of society. Richard spent the first 7 years of his life in Bordeaux and spoke French as his first langauge. Bolingbroke and even his uncle, Thomas Duke of Gloucester [youngest son of King Edward III ] spoke English as their first language, so Richard came across as favouring the language of the enemy.

My favorite king since I was a child is Richard III. He was such a three-dimensional demon. No other villain can match him.

Acting in a foreign language is difficult since part of your brain is focused on translating into that foreign language, yet the actors did a superb job; British actors are my favorite!

John of Gaunt probably gets a worse reputation than he really deserves. By the time he assumed a leading role in the military, the Hundred Years War was already turning against England. John was actually a very brave military leader who performed decently. If anyone deserves blame for the war going badly in the 1370s, its the Black Prince. That Spanish expedition was just foolish and unnecessary.

Richard II was first to insist he be called “your highness” - perhaps while sitting on the high chair mentioned here. He was clearly bonkers. Curious that the current lot keep the “highness” title - and the high chair.

Based on so many of he stories, I feel like the Plantagenets were like their own worst enemies, but then again I suppose a lot of the nobles were the same way.

Every noble monarchy began as the most successful gangsters. It's all violence and bling. I also wonder if history is best characterised as a succession of people designing ever sillier hats.

It's fascinating how there are parallels to so many different Asoiaf characters in just one man.

After watching this again I wonder why they never mention what Richard II's other uncles, John of Gaunt (Founder of House Lancaster) and Edmund of Langley ( Founder of House York), were doing all during Richard II' reign? They said that their youngest brother Thomas Duke of Gloucester was responsible for giving Richard II the news about getting rid of his friends and was one of the 5 lords(also including Henry Bolinbroke who was John of Gaunts oldest son) that confronted Richard II but in the end decided to let him keep the crown, but where were they while all this was happening? Then when Henry Bolingbroke had enough of Richard II's tyranny after Richard II stripped his inheritance that he was supposed to receive after the death of his father, John of Gaunt, and invaded and took the crown, Richard II had actually left his uncle Edmund of Langley in charge of the realm, while he was campaigning in Ireland. So obviously Richard II must have trusted his uncle Edmund of Langley a great deal to leave him in charge so I'm surprised that this video said absolutely nothing about him?

I like how everyone opens the Parliament's doors like how cowboys open saloon doors in movies.

Watching these videos close to the American 2020 presidential election helps with the despair. England is truly a great country... England survived mentally unstable, cruel tyrants. We'll see the other side of this terrible time. ::sigh::

Technically the Plantagenet dynasty didn't end until the Tudors (1485) as both the houses of Lancaster and York were descendants of Edward III and so Plantagenet's themselves.

This doco: The peasants' revolt of 1381 was "the greatest crisis the country had faced in more than 100 years." The Black Death of 1348-9: ARE YOU FUCKEN KIDDING ME??? I killed half the population! And *led to* the peasant's revolt!... Not to imply that the peasants' revolt wasn't a significant event; it was. And I liked that this busted the "brave boy king faces the bloodthirsty mob" myth, & covered the AWFUL slaughter he & his councillors inflicted on the people afterwards.

A tyrant is - very simply - a terrified mind.
