Something I just noticed, after rewatching the movie recently, is that when the jets fly over, when Ray is yelling for Robbie to slow down, the lead jet is an F-22. When this movie released, it was in 2005, which also so happens to be the same year that jet was adopted into service. A great detail, that shows just how desperate the military was, throwing literally anything they had at the aliens.

They actually don't know that they will die. They know there is high chance they will die but the commanders aren't sending the soldiers in knowing that they will die. These soldiers did not die in vain because in the later part of the movie the military continues the fight now with the knowledge that conventional weaponry does not work because the tripods have force fields around them. Prior to the battle commencing the army didn't know about the force fields, and unfortunately it was too late for these units to retreat as they were vastly outclassed in technology and in the thick of battle. However, the information relayed to command through communications was vital in preventing a full on frontal assault from being attempted again until a strategy was formed to combat the force fields.

This scene was by far the scariest scene in the entire film. The military unleashing the full might of humanity's wrath, short of nuclear weapons, and it dose absolutely nothing but slightly slow down the threat. To think there could be something out there in the vastness of the universe that could have such power is alarming to say the least. This scene is highly existential in that regard.

@TheUnseenSoldier
@TheUnseenSoldier Год назад
@@tideatmilehigh2727 Nah buddy, that was all Marines(with a side of Navy). The time period the movie takes place in, the Marines were still transitioning patterns. You can see a lot of them wearing mixed gear too(M81 Woodland/MARPAT Woodland). When there’s a transition to a new pattern, the new gear kind of trickles in to each unit. Also to factor in the vehicles, there’s Humvees, LAV’s(LAV’s being exclusive the the USMC), and Abrams tanks. Couple that with the AH-1(Also exclusive to the USMC) variant attach helicopters and the F-18 Hornets, it’s very clear that this whole scene is depicting a combined arms assault by a Marine mechanized infantry unit supported by tanks, a Marine light attack helicopter squadron, and a Navy strike fighter squadron. It’s a long stretch to assume that there’s any Army presence in this scene. I’m an eight-year Army infantry veteran. Joint operations between Army and Marine Corps do happen from time to time, but it’s very rare. This scene is textbook USMC/Navy stuff. It’s basically a Marine Corps recruiting ad gone wrong.
@tideatmilehigh2727
@tideatmilehigh2727 Год назад
@TheUnseenSoldier I was Marines from 2014-18. I won't swear to it, but I think our uniform transition was completed by 2004. However, that may have been for AD folks only, and I assume the unit depicted in this scene are probably reservists. Regardless, I remember reading some behind the scenes stuff that said this was a joint attack. For the longest time I thought it was an army/natty guard unit until I noticed some of the guys wearing MARPAT. And believe it or not, when I went to bootcamp in 2014, I still remember running into gear that had the classic woodland/BDU pattern lol. with the tripods so close, retreat would have likely meant death anyways. So the only good thing to do now is to fight to delay, or even charge in to get within the sheild perimeter. Some comments also state that this failed assault lead military leadership to realize the shields were present and conventional weapons would have no effect. The mission went from an attempt to stop/destroy the tripods in their tracks, to holding them back as long as possible for civilians to get away
@nitsuA_LH
@nitsuA_LH 18 дней назад
@@ItsVega94 they knew about the shields long before this I think. At least people that encountered and battled with them previously did. This battle took place on night 2 or 3 of the invasion. The news reporter who Tom Cruise met near the beginning of the movie said that she was attached to a National Guard unit and they couldn’t touch them because of the shields. Plus they don’t seem to be focusing on or very good at targeting aircraft. Jets are flying by them pelting them with missiles, so they definitely had reports of the shields prior to this battle. That’s just my theory though. What I actually don’t understand at all though is why the hell are they sending in ground forces and infantry against these things? Artillery I can understand but they had infantry with basic weapons doing absolutely nothing. Lives lost for no reason.

The music from this scene, scored by the legendary John Williams, is so incredible. 1:32, what a POWERFUL moment. The music is contrary to the scene. A lot of chaos, running, explosions, etc. and Mr. Williams scored the scene with a slow, lament piece. The choir was incredible in this moment with no vibrato, making the music sound less human, and more like the soul of someone getting anguished.

The contrast in this scene between humanity’s collective might as a species, versus the individualistic traits of humans. We see the culmination of humans’ technology/intelligence in the military’s entire strength being thrown at the aliens, then the way the camera pans down in the same shot to see one human, a father pleading with his son, desperately trying to save him from almost certain death. Then the impossible choice he is faced with, having to choose to leave his son to to a fate that he willingly accepts, in order to save his daughter who needs him now more than ever. One of the best scenes in cinema history in my opinion.

Other scary thing to consider is that guy at the end of the video, he was good and nice enough to help them, and give them shelter in his home, his basement. I love how this scene is set up. At the beginning the sound of explosions and travelling projectiles is overwhelming, deafening at that. We see the Military roll in en masse as they fight against the tripods who are hidden over the crest of the hill, we even get a classic 'Alien Invasion Movie' scene where the jets suddenly fly in to turn the tide of the battle, and soon after even more helicopters arrive and unload everything they have at the Tripods. In most other movies, the jets sweeping in alone would have been the turning point where the humans realise they CAN win against the Martians, but not here. After all of the effort the military went through to buy time, it amounted to about a minute and a half of struggle before being wiped out, and I especially love how it ends with the wide shot as the remaining few soldiers fire whatever they have left at the tripods. Really sells how the Tripods wiped the floor with the soldiers and how little there are left.

I've never actually thought about this before but does anyone else noticed the burned humvees were PERFECTLY centered? It means the soldiers inside probably were retreating when they got zapped. That has to be the most horrifying scene ever of this movie. You'd think that the US Military out of all things would be able to easily fend off atleast one of the tripods, the way you see an entire line, hell, an armada of tanks, planes, helicopters, soldiers all shooting at the same thing and then charging into battle, you'd expect to see or atleast hear crashing sounds as if the Tripods were destroyed. 10 seconds. Not even 10 seconds after god-who-knows amount of soldiers and military vehicles charge at the Tripods, we see pieces of them coming back, Humvees burning as they roll back down the other side of the hill, facing their backs to the Tripods, almost as if their occupants realised that they're invincible and desperately tried to survive only to be desintegrated, leaving only burning metal husks as the result. Then the explosion hits, you might have thought that these Humvees were deserters, one or two people deciding to flee, only to see giant balls of flame rise from behind the hill and a giant, imposing, unphased killing machine rising from the hill, ash all around it, firing envelopping its shield. The noise, Tripods powering up their Heat-Rays, almost as if the hundreds of soldiers they just killed were nothing but small insects they crushed, totally unphased, hell-bent on just killing more and more people, as if their hunger can never be fullfilled. This scene is horrifying, just the fact that you saw 200, 300, who knows, maybe 400 soldiers charge at the biggest threat ever seen on our planet just to be decimated within seconds and then swiped away, like the Tripods couldn't give two-shits about what they were trying.

I suppose you have to think about the fact that there is basically no front line in this war. It's as if there's one tripod for every square mile of the country and it doesn't matter what direction you go because you'll still be very likely to encounter the Martians. If you stay near military units then you might feel like you have some semblance of protection. Also, a lot of those civilians weren't aware that the military hadn't been dealing any damage to the tripods at all. Some of them probably wanted to see humans getting back at the aliens for once or even try to help the military in whatever way they felt they could. I still find it strange to see so many helpless people running towards an intense battle but that's probably the best explanation for why they did it.

They never showed an attempt to focus their fire on one of the tripods, and just try and bring it down through sheer force. If they were able to knock down at least one or two conventionally, it would’ve been a bit more true to the original novel.

Movie has great opening+helicopter arrival but outside of it is painfully forgettable. Aliens looks like creatures of garbage dump rather than other wordly creatures, who are also painfully dumb if water is theirs' needed resource (I think only aliens from Signs were dumber). That's why I put 2005 War of the Worlds on pedestal. Tripods are among the best designed alien creations there are, aliens themselves also look alien enough, they even have they're unique personality. Clearly inteligent, curious but also without empathy. Theirs' motive also is solid. They want Earth cause it's already habitable world and they want to terraform for theirs' specific needs. And them enacting complete one-sided stomp is perfect for irony of the title. It's not really war, it's extermination. Also fact how seemingly invincible they are, helps with ending when they are defeated by Earth Nature itself. Hubris and overconfidence in theirs' technological supremacy, led to theirs' downfall.

Blame Spielberg. He couldn't kill a kid anymore even in a fictional scenario involving aliens. As he's gotten older he's lost a lot of his edge. The movie pretty much tells you 1 billion people died but killing the protagonists son due to his own stupidity is too much.

The reason why he survived because he is baseball player and he runs fast. And I don't think that Robbie wants to fight, he just wanted to back home and that's where Boston is. Running the opposite direction where the tripods are. Lucky, he survived. It's unknown what he experienced right after the battle of the hill.

I have tried to deconstruct this scene in my mind before, to try to understand some of the parts a little better. Spielberg is not an idiot, he would not film something like the humvees on fire coming over the hill without some sort of implied scenario. Because seeing them all come back down the hill in formation while on fire doesn't really make a lot of sense, right? Well a couple moment later, you can see the tripods are using an energy beam/ray to attack with. The tripods probably zapped across all the military vehicles in a continuous line, which set them all on fire. Once they were on fire, not only did it most likely kill all the gunners, but the outer flames make it impossible for any other guys inside to man the gun. So at that point, a retreat was most likely called, and that is why you see them all come back down the hill in a united fashion. The way that scene was filmed, it can be heavily implied that a live man is in the driver seat of every humvee. You can see the tripod laser beam sets everything on fire where ever it is aimed, because it is a beam and not a projectile. It would make sense that some of the military vehicles could possibly withstand it, even if just for a very brief amount of time.

The shields of commander class tripods are way more powerful than the shields of warrior class tripods and harvester class tripods. If the military were fighting warrior class tripods in this scene then they could have stood a chance and take down a few tripods because they were literally throwing every single bit of destructive force at the tripods. The Martians wouldn’t even send harvester class tripods for obvious reasons. Since the Uberpods (commander tripods) were attacking, the military indeed stood absolutely no chance at defeating the Martian forces, they were in fact just delaying their advance… and they still died for nothing, literally all the civilians were running TO the fight instead of away. I mean with that much destructive force being pumped out of the US military in this scene, I think the people thought they were actually pushing back the Martian forces, they were hyped and hopeful to finally achieve victory. And then their hopes went up in flames… did I write too much?

@@thefinalsolution247 I agree. The civilians were very arrogant, Not only because they’re endangering themselves, but because they’re hindering the military. They’re pulling soldiers out of the fight and making it hard to coordinate, Not only are the military fighting the Tripods but now they need to be careful not to accidentally hit or run over the civilians. You can literally see soldiers telling and forcing civilians to stay back instead of running towards the hill that the tripods are advancing on.

It was an important part at this stage of the film to have a scene like this. To show the most powerful military in history throwing their all at the Tripods and failing to make even a dent. It takes any hope for a conventional solution or defense against this invasion and squashes it.

I don't understand Robbie's thought process in this scene what did he think he was going to accomplish by staying there and watching the military get completely demolished or was he thinking of joining in to what he probably thought was helping the military "fight" the aliens when they knew.that they were only going to delay the aliens advance very temporarily and still get destroyed for it and in the end their sacrifice didn't even matter

He wants to help. You can see it very clearly in the ferry scene a little earlier than this one, when the ferry gets capsized and the Tripods start scooping people out of the water. When the three of them get to a safe spot away from the river and look back, Rachel and Ray look more scared/shocked, but Robbie's baring his teeth. He's pissed. He's at the age where, historically, he'd have been conscripted to fight in the military. He's a teenager. He's in the prime of his life: old enough to pick up a gun and follow orders, but young enough to march for 12 hours without his body buckling and collapsing. Also, a bit more relevantly, his body is surging with testosterone. It's upsetting to see thousands of people dying all around him and hear his baby sister screaming and crying with fear nonstop. His instinct isn't to run away - it's to fight. Oh, he stands no chance against a 60-foot alien war machine? Doesn't matter. Instinct isn't always logical. In fact, instincts are pretty much always the exact opposite of logical. That's why Robbie's being a shithead. He's a rebellious teenager in possibly the highest stress scenario imaginable, so he's running far more on emotion and hormones than he should be.
