I think the UCI needs to increase the weight limit. These girly boys that look like toothpicks do not represent of the 99.9 people even in the club rides that enjoy competing with each other. Bring back the cyclist image from 40 or 50 years ago. People like Eddy Merckx were animals on the bike. Racing wasn't like a chess match of time and boring to watch. And it was done on steel bikes that were actually safer to ride. For me what cycling has become is a joke. Seriously, I don't even watch Pro racing anymore because I just don't care to watch what I'm seeing when I do.

Something about forcing the newer standards on entry-level bicycles, so people who are starting in the sport can upgrade their frames with better components, instead of them ending up in a waste.

90% of aero frames look the same to me now except for Trek adding more triangles... I agree the weight limit should be modified. Why not just require certain frame materials or brakes if they're really worried about safety?

I will say this is one of the reasons why I like brands like Trek, Bianchi, and the Cervelo S5. Yes, their designs are kinda goofy, but it makes their bikes look unique. You know what they are just by looking at it. You strip the logos off half these bikes and you couldn’t tell what’s what

Thank you for the video, 20 years ago all bikes were identical, same tube shapes, same material, and same design ,lighter bikes could work for smaller riders or female riders but not for the heavy more powerful riders. weight limit needs to go down forsure. Mainly to give smaller riders a bike thats a smaller % of their body weight, especially in the women's peloton. Giving a little more freedom with geometry as well would make things more interesting, as long as the bikes meet some sort of safety standard

I can understand that from a bike shop point of view you would want some change so manufacturers can try different designs and trigger more sales of new products. UCI is trying to keep the sport as it was originally, a popular activity where racers and normal people were divided by their strength, not much by the bicycles. F1 is the complete opposite, exotic machines driven by millionaires. Cycling has always been with connected with more humble racers and the bikes could be very similar to the ones you ride. It is all about the rider ability, but I guess the industry need to push for the expensive machines to make it more like Moto GP.
@robbchastain3036
@robbchastain3036 6 месяцев назад
Bike companies are free to do whatever they want right now, not every bike is UCI legal. I simply don't understand the fixation on Tour bikes for the marketplace, sure, they are exotic but so are F1 cars and I don't see any F1 drivers using one as a daily driver. And this is not to say I don't want or appreciate high-performance bikes, just that this bit about us sport and competitive riders needing the latest Tour bike to go fast is bogus. And anyone who is winning local races will get better bikes and gear from their sponsors in recognition of their need for it, and sure, in that season of their life, they do have a need for speed. 😀
@bernardo9202
@bernardo9202 6 месяцев назад
UCI demands that pro bikes are sold to the public So companies need to make bikes for that public. But brands that are out of the UCI spectrum, is just dumb keeping making bikes for them and not for the people
@robbchastain3036
@robbchastain3036 6 месяцев назад
@@bernardo9202 Good point, totally understand the need for homologation in pro cycling, just that my point is that bike companies can do whatever they want to win customers and Specialized, for one, has done that with a below-UCI-weight road bike. And of course the industry as a whole has been doing that en mass ever since whenever and I was a beneficiary of that when Schwinn rolled out the 20" Sting-Ray bicycle for kids in the 1960s. That bike was inspired by kids in Southern California modifying their 20" bikes to look like motorcycle choppers with bicycle polo saddles and high-rise handlebars. A Schwinn rep was tipped off to that, returned to Chicago and within a short period the Schwinn Sting-Ray was in production and for the next decade-plus, that was the coolest bike a kid in the States could ride. And lots of us didn't ride them like choppers, we rode them like motocross motorcycles, lol. Or like Evel Knievel and his Harley. And then came BMX bikes, thanks to kids racing their Sting-Rays in the original BMX races, and mountain bikes and even that, production mountain bikes, shared the market at their inception with 26" single-speed bikes produced for the BMX Cruiser Class and my first 26" was a Mongoose purchased at a bike shop in San Mateo, California in March '82. It was a great off-road bike and a fond memory is riding it in the California desert a couple of weeks later. All of that to say a big tip of the hat to the bike creators for cooking up great bikes for us to ride and, well, race each other and right now I am building up a 26" full-rigid compact-frame '90s Specialized for gravel events, better BB and cranks and cockpit, just original frame and wheels and cantis. And I'll run 1.5s for that need for speed and it will be a fun bike, an homage to BMX and mountain bikes for some good-time gravel And maybe a ribbon in the over-60 class. 😀.

The rule that needs ditched is the 12 spoke limit on wheels for mass start events. It was created out of unrealistic phobia. The biggest aero gains left on the table with conventional double diamond frames with no fairings are the wheels.
@Ryan_Odyssey
@Ryan_Odyssey 6 месяцев назад
Also there are conventional wire spoked wheels like Corima (and older Bontrager, Rolf, etc) that use paired spokes, creating gaps already bigger than a hypothetical 12 spoke limit...farther proving how antiquated the rule is.

I think there shouldn't be a weight limit at all... just test protocols... like putt 500kg on the saddle, 300 on the handlebars... drop the bike from a meter with that wegiht on top - if it survives, it's legal. full stop...

Structurally the bike must contain at least two triangles of a certain size but they may be in any chosen configuration or orientation might be a nice innovation spering UCI parameter change Or a super deep head tube and fork like 4.5 to 1 ratio which would free Specialized up for a killer new resurrected Venge design
@nerigarcia7116
@nerigarcia7116 6 месяцев назад
This isn't new, all the bikes have the same formula because that's what works within the parameters they're given by the UCI. The UCI's goal is to maintain the heritage of the classic bicycle, so yeah, everything is going to look the same. Back in the 80s and 90s all the bikes looked the same so modern bikes are actually a far cry different from each other than we think with just the lines they choose within the shapes. UCI only regulates racing so it doesn't stop bike manufacturers from creating something totally out of the box for consumers. So, we can blame it on bike companies who don't want to stray too far and ultimately consumers who only want to buy what the pros have. With that said, I think the UCI can ease up on a lot of things but then you'll have a disparity between teams who can afford the best of the best and those who can't. Their restrictions try to level the playing field. I would like to see different categories of bikes being raced, maybe even within a stage race. One stage you have to ride a steel frame, another an aero, and another you can ride whichever whacky design you want, etc. But that'll never happen. What is produced for racing doesn't have to affect what we ride on the road. I don't race so I don't care, I ride what I want and I quite like what's out there now. We're going ask for something groundbreaking and it might look weird, we won't like the changes, and then we'll just wish bikes looked like they have for ages. Hence, the UCI.

A year or so ago, a British cycling publication (I can't recall which one) took a bunch of World Tour bikes, then digitally stripped them down to a bare carbon look, and asked a bunch of cycling journalists and bike industry types to identify them. It was much more difficult than it sounded, and not everyone got them correct. It reminded me of your point about all of the manufacturers basically making the same bike. It's kind of boring.

Cranksets are not very aero. Hello Shimano and SRAM. Also, forks are forks - have two fork sides. One side, like Cannondale Lefty, only no shock, "could" be more aero. Less is more. Headtubes could be narrower. End convention on bearing size. Front derailleur mechanisms could be mounted much lower and between seat tube and down tube - out of wind stream. Brake handles are not aero and neither are hoods. Seems like a lot of room for improvement. Unfortunately, some of it relies upon SRAM and Shimano who have made little progress.

We need a *people’s brand who will push the limits and make unique bikes, which aren’t governed by UCI rules. Hell, I think that’d be a GREAT marketing move because the majority of *Us (recreational cyclists) aren’t racing anyways. Bikes look the same because aerodynamics determines the shape, and as different companies develop their aero shape, they all start going to the same dynamics conclusion. If you want to look different, then you lose aerodynamic competitiveness. If you lose aerodynamics, you lose customers. If the UCI changes rules, all the bike companies will still end up with the same basic shapes. This is the same in Formula 1.

If you want to "sell" bikes, then the restrictions make all these brands look similar. I applaud Trek for finding their own path with the new Madone, does it ride better, go faster, jump higher.....probably not. Remember, "race bikes" are not for the masses, even though I see a crap ton of tools riding them. Race bikes are for RACING at a full sponsorship level, figure out what you need and ride it. Most people can't spend over $5k for a bike anyways, so why get worked up about a $12+k bike anyways.

Lowering the 6.8kg weight limit will not bring about the change you want, we'll just see even more expensive bikes that break into pieces more easily in a crash. The brake lever thing is a sensible move IMHO and very easy to implement, it doesn't take much to put them back where they were designed to be. You have spent months talking about high inventory, drop in sales, discounting and so on and now you do a 180 and want the UCI to change the rules, forcing manufacturers to spend another fortune on R&D for sponsored teams. What for? If they do it then you will moan that you can't shift last year's model because all the gullible fools want the ultra-lightweight bike despite being 10 or 20kg overweight, and everyone will complain that the new bikes are even more expensive and ugly than before, saying "Bring back sensible models!" If you want to sell more bikes then you need to find out what they will BUY, not what they like to ogle and watch on TV. In many parts of the world gravel bikes are significantly outselling road bikes. WorldTour racing is becoming less relevant to many and with the loss of GCN+ that audience will shrink further. But yeah let's do a 6.2kg limit and add another 30% to the price tag. 🙄

The weight limit needs to be specific for frame sets for each size. Big difference from an xs and xl frame. And bigger difference with the stress bigger ppl put on it. The way it is now bigger frames are less safe. And small riders are at a disadvantage when their smaller bike has to weigh as much as a bigger bike. Also when it comes to safety with bikes the main issue is the frame set. The 2nd would be wheels and handle bars, they need to be separate when it comes to regulating the standards and rules. Because unlike frame sets wheels and bars are general the same size
@timtaylor9590
@timtaylor9590 6 месяцев назад
An xs bike that weighs 13lbs could potentially be stronger and safer than a 15lb xl bike. Mostly due to the rider. It's just really obvious how dumb the rule is, it can never and will never be a one size fits all.

@timtaylor9590 6 месяцев назад
@@brankododig1585 so a smaller rider should benefit from saving those 200 grams, plus as you said components weigh more, so they should also benefit from smaller bars and tires, seat post, ect... smaller riders lose more than big riders when it comes to aero as well because they generally put out less power so the effects of air pressure and weight effects them more on flats and down hill. a small guy with an xs bike has to have a 15lb bike vs a guy with an xl bike, both 15lbs? it doesnt make sense. and these uber light frames are not safe, durable, practical, or environmentally friendly. yes weight is mostly in components and wheels, so lets make frames even lighter to make up for heavy components, thats the problem. theres a huge difference with a 600 gram xs frame vs 600 gram xl frame. i wouldnt want to ride that 600 gram xl frame if i was 6ft plus, 200lb plus guy. compare that to a 110lb female. its the exact thing as having the aero bar position rule made to fit riders of different sizes. its not a one size fits all, it never is or never will be. guess what, height is less consequential when it comes to safety vs power and weight, because power and weight is what puts stress on these brittle carbon parts that make it past qc and basic engineering practices, end up in consumers hands causing harm due to failures.

I get your point but bikes have always looked similar, just take a look at the "Hard Man" age of cycling when all bikes were made from round tubes. I disagree that the UCI rules have stifled innovation though, again compare what we ride today versus 10, 20, 30 years ago. Performance increases year on year, despite the restrictions which demonstrates the detail level of innovation that goes on. The subtle difference in frame design between manufactures is also greater now than its ever been. The UCI rules have also evolved, maybe a little too slow but then again, if the UCI were changing regularly, the costs, which are already too high, would go up even further to allow manufactures to benefit from the rule changes and the cost is picked up by the consumers. Lastly, take a look at the terrible designs that come out of triathlon where manufacture are not restricted by UCI, those bikes look god-damn awful. In summary, I don't think this is a big an issue as you seem to. 🙂

Why do you even care what the uci thinks? You don't race, like 99.99% of cyclists. Just buy the bike you want, like I did. My frame and wheels are uci illegal and I've never even put it on the scale.

I’d say more than 0.01 percent of cyclist race. I have tons of friends who ride and race and we all have to adhere to the UCI rules.

Whatever the UCI says, frame manufacturers have to adhere to. He cares because it affects the products he sells

Its not for racing, its for bicycle production and limits of what they can make, they are limited to follow rules the two triangle rules or specific designs for illegal aero gains or a weight limit for a bike, this is stopping the creativity and putting us at a plateau for future bike releases, which I do care about... my shifters are tilted all the way in so I dont care abnout the uci but imagine if weight limit was 6kg now we have companies making top tier bikes 6kg weights mid to low tier 6.8-7kg maybe a new design of a bike where it doesn't need a seatpost all the way down to the crank.... something different

missed the point of the video, I make bikes under 6.8kg and also tuirn shifters all the way I do not care about uci rules but it affects what bike companies make bikes for

The factor's fork and downtube profiles are quite different. It's just the colours that make them look the same.

UCI has to make dumb rules to justify their importance. Its why it pissed me off when they decided they own gravel too.

Both of my road bikes are UCI illegal. My climbing bike Time VXS weights 6,5kg, ready to ride- UCI illegal. My aero bike Look Blade RS has saddle tip to BB up to 40mm, again UCI illegal. 😅

Bruh, you can't say the New Ostro looks similar to the propel without mentioning that the Propel was literally a carbon copy of the current Ostro!

If UCI lowers the weight limit, certain 200 pound cyclists are going to break their frames… 😂😂😂

Factor is headed down the path of making ugly bikes. Huge frontal tubes and stick thin rears with ugly proportions. A real shame. Dave Arthur even mentioned that the new o2 handled terribly. Just make the weight limit lower or none at all. Make it... F1

I am kind of getting tired of people saying, "everything looks the same". Until carbon fiber bikes came along, all bikes literally looked the same with the exception of the lugs. In fact, some pro riders would have their favorite frame builder build a frame and they would put sponsor logos on it and nobody could tell the difference. If a bike is too different, people tend to not buy them.

"I've been in the bicycle industry for a very long time..." Would you mind disclosing your definition of "a very long time" as I don't think that will align with 99% of the world.

my dads dad bought the store 42 years ago, my dad owned the store from him, and then he gave it to me and my brother, I have been working in that shop for over 12 years, but the bicycle industry has been in my life the whole time, we sold trek giant jamis, cannondale pinarello, felt a ton of brands, we sold trek when lance armstrong was winning the tours.... if I wasnt working there it was being discussed through our house hold, also have made it throughh tough times like 08 recession and other events
