I would like to see a debate with Slant 3D on your "production must be injection molding" take. It'd be interesting for sure

I agree. If you have enough 3d printers, I think 3D Printing will surpass injection molding because you have a lot of design freedom. Less upfront cost and more spread out production.

This battle will be legendary.

@@AugiesHobbies It also depends a lot on the size of the parts. Having said that, Prusa is manufacturing quite large parts using its 3D farm. I'd really love to see a proper analysis of the topic.

If you need dozens of things, 3D Printing. If you need 100's of things, Vacuum Forming. If you need 1000's of things, Injection Molding. Why? Injection molding takes seconds to make a part. Vacuum forming takes 10's of seconds to make a part. 3D printing takes minutes to hours to make a part. You can scale up as some have mentioned by having multiple printers, but you can also design vacuum forming or injection molds with multiple cavities so they pop out many parts in each action.

With advances in 3D printing in the last few years, I think the line is blurring. I am not against injection molding, but I have used printers to make 3500+ parts for our production needs. We are going to continue using 3D printing for certain parts, but do expect to use injection molding for other ones. The high complexity you can achieve with 3D printing is just too good to let go completely. Especially for small assembly teams.

I agree and I'll be thrilled to replace ancient injection molding with a more flexible, modern technology.

@@PredictableDesigns I think there's going to be room and need for both. For very simple stuff that is moderately large and is not likely to change anytime soon, injection molding is perfect. For more complex parts that are smaller, it may be better to keep those 3D printed. You can improve more similarly to software with quick, effective iteration. Not a panacea, but it is nice.

You should put a link to the next suggested video under this video in the 'more' area, as some people have on-screen notifications turned off. Just saying. Great video.

thank you for this video i was sure that massive production are not made with 3d printer not only 3d design can end up some product failure but also not strong and take lot of time and also about size since time is one of the thing u cant waste in massive production even min delay matter so i was sure they are not using 3d printer but i was also confused how they do the complex part tnx for this video for explaining

I'm a 3d printing nerd and to me FDM is exemplary of why people feel like the future is shitty. We go from injection molding, which already wasn't that great to begin with, and move to an even shittier technology with worse properties, that's more expensive, that doesn't make transparent parts, that's harder to keep clean, much more prone to surface imperfections, that likes to spread little whiffs of microplastic poop everywhere. Yes it is more advantageous to the designer, but that doesn't really benefit the user. Time to stop living in denial. Layer lines suck.

I am just saying injection molding and 3d printing use the same materials for producing parts. Also I don't understand your reasoning for why 3d printing is a worse production option. Both have pros and cons. 3D printing will not completely replace injection molding. They will be used for different types of parts and for different needs based on their pros and cons.
@AugiesHobbies

Also layer lines do not suck. They add a texture to the part which is really expensive for injection molding. If you design the part so that it is orientated correctly so that the layer lines do not negatively affect the strength of the part where strength is needed, they can become a benefit.
