Hi Guys! If you liked this video, please share and give it a 👍🏾to help us reach more people on RU-vid! Comment below... Have you ever bought an open box appliance? How was your experience?
I found out at lowes you can ask them if that is the best price they will do for that open box item and a lot of the time they will come way down even more on the price.
I don’t have a house. . .nor do I DIY. . .but, you guys popped up today. I watched the entire video because I enjoyed the calm and confident demeanor in the voice of the narrator. . . it was like watching an episode of Columbo. . .with that quirky ending 😂🫣 I Subscribed.
Welcome to the DIYPC family, DSMarty! We're glad you are here😀. Everything always worked out for Columbo (in the end). We're quirky as well. We know that all of your projects work out for you too. Best -DIYPC ✨️
1 suggestion I would make after working at Lowes where sometimes we had to change out damaged doors on refrigerators would be to take pictures or video of the layout of the wiring harness and water connections on top of the doors before removing them. All the control panel wiring and sensor wiring from the doors is up there. It can be confusing to reconnect when replacing the doors. Makes life easier to go back and see what it looked like before.
I ALMOST teared up when you talked about your kids. Know the feeling all too well - but unlike you - mine are all grown up. Still a tight family but those days are gone. Either way, I know the feeling well. Refrigerators are total nightmares to get in a home. And yes, I learned the hard way that you have to be super careful about which one you choose to get inside the house :)
This is the first video i saw on your channel. The guy knows what he is doing, explains very well, talks to his wife and kids lovingly, what's there not to like? Subscribed immediately, congratulations on job well done
Good video. We’re a lot older than you and your wife so we have no choice but to have one delivered. However, you did a good job showing our younger folks how it’s done. 👍🏻
Great job as usual! I can’t tell whether you had a soft brace on under your shirt, but please by all means protect your back by wearing a heavy duty, leather back brace when carrying, pushing, pulling extremely heavy items along with safety gloves to protect your hands.. When I’m in Costco, Walmart, and I see young guys lifting and pulling heavy items on those pallets,I always warn them. I can’t help it.When you’re young, you don’t feel it but later on it catches up. RN, BSN of 31+ years here. Retired early due to sciatica. Great video and thank you!❤❤
Here's how I buy appliances. These stores all have 2 yearly sales where prices are the best of the year. I wait for that time and toward the end of the sale they usually have a BUNCH of returns. I find Best Buy usually has the most returns. They will sometimes even send most of them to a few particular stores in large metro areas. When a return during the sale hits the floor they are marked down even more from the original price. So instead of getting $500 off, you can get $800 off a brand-new appliance. Many don't have anything wrong with them, since many of these appliances were returned for the reason you found, they didn't fit in the home.
There’s an old vid on The Handyman YT channel called the Lowe’s scam you need to know about. It describes the an incident involving reselling a faulty appliance (washer) in the mark down section. Glad your purchase went ok!!!
I bought a new refrigerator about 9 months ago. I was a bit surprised with one thing. They told me delivery was included (sounds good). But delivery was putting it on the curb by your house (Huh!), instillation was extra! Had I known this before I had already paid for the fridge I may have gone with another vender, but I put out additional money for the installation. The fridge has been good, and the installation people were very good, but I feel a bit deceived, and I would not recommend them.
You are right, Jay. Guess, if we all practice being the good neighbor, others will say they are blessed with having good neighbors as well. Thanks for your comment, we appreciate you! - DIYPC😀✨
It can happen where people don't think to measure before buying an appliance. I remember growing up during a time where all appliances were a standard size. Those days are long gone.
Great video! Moving that behemoth through both doorways single handed while videoing being calm cool and collected, priceless. I wish you both the best, a great looking couple.
This is why I have a small refrigerator in the house, and a giant one in the garage. Not to mention it makes it easy to put groceries away. I just pull in the garage and unload the car/truck inside out of the weather
Very nice video but let me tell you something, don’t push the refrigerator all the way to the wall, you need to leave a few inches so the motor can breathe
I only buy open boxed appliances. One tip when buying an open box at Lowe's is they usually don't allow extended service plans on them. What you have to do is buy it and a few days later come back and buy the plan. I have yet to have an open boxed appliance last the full term of the extended service plan. They will fix it a few times and finally send you a check for the price you paid. This has happened on three freezers, two refrigerators and a beverage cooler. They don't make them like the use to.
This style refrigerator the drawer door harness went out. Shredded the harness from wear. Replaced the harness , but it also shorted the board. It was stuck in demo mode and was not keeping the fridge cool. Samsung out of warranty quoted $900 for repair. I repaired it for $300 in parts.
Regarding your dolly wheels, if there's a Harbor Freight or similar store near you, replace the pneumatic wheels with solid (flat free) ones. They'll ride a tad bit harder, but you'll never need to air them up. This helps especially if you use your dolly often!
Yes, actual fridge dollies have small solid wheels for easier turning etc, also have a strap that secures the fridge to the dolly so there is no slipping
I worked at Lowe’s for 12 years we delivered all appliances over 395 dollars for free at first then they started charging 35 dollars I know now it’s done by outside contractors but they unbox it at store before delivering in past .
They had a lot of open box appliances when we went there. Most companies use sub-contractors to do an off-shoot of their work. They charge more than $35 now. Thanks for your comment, Henry! - DIYPC😀✨
I have had to move big fridges alone too - I find when going through tight spots or stairs etc i lay the fridge on a large furniuture blanket and then pull the corners of the blanket and the fridge becomes manageable
I've had those open box appliances repaired under warranty as after getting them home and having issues right away and finding out the reason why it was returned right away. I have a truck so I don't have to rent a uhall. I also found out that if you talk to the manager a lot of the time you can talk them into reducing the price even more.
That is why I drive a van and not a truck. Rear seats out, fridge in, hand truck next to it and you can easily move large stuff like a fridge yourself. Dryer? No problem! Even smaller motorcycles on their side fit. Also always have somebody who I helped with moving stuff so if I need a helping hand it's there
Truly magnificent video. As someone without a dad I have to say the best part was how excellent of an example you set & the respect/gratitude you showed to the next gen. Thank you Many many blessings
A quick note about the U-Haul dealer. To be an independent U-Haul dealer all you really need is a computer and parking. You will occasionally need to sweep out a truck, take a run for gas or put some air in a tire. The company may even help you with those issues, and of course take care of anything more complicated. It’s a great way for any business to make a little extra money.
Your channel is so amazing!!! My story is that I returned a refrigerator the same day because the doors were too big for that refrigerator. Yes, I rent a Uhaul...
Same story I have same store and look at this I had to pay for repairs and it’s starting to make some more noises. If you need refrigerator don’t buy it from LOEWS and differently not that brand. Thanks for sharing a good video. Get a new one and have them set it up.
I never buy delivery and installing since I have my own trailers and trucks... I'm glad when I had my house built i went with wheelchair accessible doors throughout house... I could get that thru the door and house w/o taking doors off.
I always tell my customers to measure the home passageways not just the correct measurements in the kitchen. It's also one of the reasons why I don't do upstairs delivery for most modern fridges and front load washing machines.
I'm lazy, I just waited for costco to have a sale. I bought a new fridge and induction stove. They picked up my old stuff, put in the new, and where out of my house in about 45 minutes. I saved $500 off retail.
Bought my last refrigerator 4 years ago. Having dealt with the house doors and unit doors in the past i opted to purchase a "Cabinet Depth" model this time around. So happy my 2020 Samsung still working unlike some other brands.....
Our open box Kenmore (from Sears back in the day) made by LG has been an outstanding appliance for over 20 years the couple of dents on the bottom of the freezer made it an outstanding half price appliance and is just completely worn out.
Excellent demonstration of all aspects of moving, dismantling and installing a refrigerator. However, I'm still not sure what being an open-box had to do with anything. The same steps would have had to be taken even if new.
The only difference is that you may not have had to do it yourself on a new refrigerator. If you had free or paid installation, the store would have their people do it for you.
I need to say yes. You have done everything right but when you're putting back the top half of the door on the right don't put the cover plate back on the hinges. Leave it off and also you got to leave the bolts on the right half loose for adjustments and also any other problems that might occur when I dropped off a fridge for somebody's new house and I was putting it in. That's one of the things I have dealt with because the other guy that I was working with did not understand that you only put the item together halfway, not all the way you leave part of it loose for adjustments. That's what I have learned when I was dealing with appliances, especially fridges. Those freezer are pain in the ass upright and the chest freezers
Nice video and thanks for sharing! But in the future, DO have help with you on ANY heavy lifting and moving projects like this. Your back will thank you along with you cutting down on chances of getting a hernia or two. (I speak from experience on both.) And on fridges, I would prefer to pay a bit more and have it in a box and have pros install it. Best wishes from New Mexico!
@@DIYPowerCouple You are welcome! Thank God you had no back or hernia issues after doing this job but like I said, if you cannot get help in the future, let a crew do the delivery and set-up for you on any new or used appliances and/or furniture. Best wishes from New Mexico! 😊
Great video. For our instance, the delivery service included the removal of old & delivery of new fridge. Being on a second floor, I would much prefer to have some else break their back. Imagine maneuvering a large 320LBS brick up & down the stair cases by your self. Nope.
I have done this a lot over the years. Why is it always a struggle to put the door on the bottom pin. I'm glad it's not just me . Very informative and well done video.
After doing extensive amounts of homework, I learned never ever buy an appliance, open box or not, at a big box store. Here's the reason. The minute it's out of the store, you own it even under warranty. For example, if you buy a samsung, and something goes wrong, you've got to call samsung directly, not the store. When we remodeled our kitchen, we looked at 4 store, buy went back to our go-to, privately owned appliance store to purchase. First, their prices were right in line with the big box guys. Second, they delivered, set up, and connected all appliances, and third and the most important thing,is that they service every appliance they sell. If I had an issue with any appliance, I make just one phone call, and their own tech is at my house next day. I didn't need to call though but consider all that I mentioned before going to a big box store. When you consider the truck rental, the work involved, and nobody there if you need warranty work, and your valuable time, you saved nothing.
But did WE save "nothing???"🤔🤔 ...If you know, you know! Put a like on this reply if you understand from our point of view and give us your take on it.
Refrigerators are way too big these days. I ordered one of those Samsung bespoke refrigerators with the custom colored panels a few years ago. I have a pretty wide front door/entry threshold, but the refrigerator would not fit so they had to go through my backyard, take the doors off, and it still barely fit through my patio doors. I love that refrigerator, but I worry if I ever move, I might have to just leave it for the next owner.
I bought a demo Samsung from Home Depot, it was delivered. It had issues and Samsung REFUSED to honor the warranty. Be careful people, that cost me $2,500.
We may have to do a video on who honors and doesn't honor their warranties. Share your stories. Also, DIYPC family, if you have information, please share that as well.
@@DIYPowerCouple - Samsung said their records said it was sold to Home Depot, Home Depot did provide multiple receipts but it didn’t help. Samsung said send them the original receipt, and I did, Samsung said it was a copy, and not the original. When the warranty lady said bluntly that it would cost me more to sue them than the refrigerator cost, it became clear to me why they had asked me if I was a lawyer early on. This was a calculated move to deny warranty vlaims.
This looks exactly like the Whirlpool fridge we got way back in 2012, it's been great but the ice maker went out on us in 2014 and had to be replaced, it went out again in 2016 and I found a "Old style" ice maker that could be retro fitted into this fridge, it's 2024 and I've had no issues with the fridge or ice maker since 2016.
What I did to make it easier when I brought my new fridge was, I opened a large hole in my wall, put the fridge in, then made an insurance claim and had insurance fix the hole.
That kitchen needs to have its own DIY series! The wallpaper and the floor guys and gals! Opened box appliances are usually cheaper, I can never find what I need, so I only buy closed box appliances. Good choice on the new appliance though! 🎊 🎉❤👍🏽🛠️⚒️
Glad you're still here, Paul! We wouldn't want that to happen to you. I would drop it and stand on it before I let it take me out. 😀 I'll show the fridge who's the boss!! LOL
This basically gets summed up as "measure your space, and think about how the new thing will get into that space from outside". I've bought fridges "open box" - here they're called factory seconds I think? Same type of deal, delivery isn't included so I did the same thing, hired a 3 tonne box truck since that was the smallest I could get with the required vertical space. Only other choice was a damn horse float. They let me back it up to the loading dock out back and drove the forklift straight onto it, and the truck had a hydraulic lifter on the tailgate that I used when I got ho me. Ended up swapping three fridges around for family members that day, LOL. Best piece of advice I would offer is to buy yourself a removalist blanket and some ratchet straps. People often just try and do it with a couple of towels and some old rope but it's so much quicker when you know the blanket will give full, padded coverage, and not having to deal with knots when you can just ratchet it down and know it'll stay put.
Lay it on a furniture blanket and you can easily slide it down the stairs, just be sure to let the fridge sit in it’s upright position for a day or more so any oil etc that runs into the tubing while laid down can drain back to the compressor before you start it
many refrigerators do not allow such installation - ventilation is required on both the side walls and the back, but your drawer is overflowing the ventilation at the back
@2:48 Or... maybe measure before you buy.... you know.... those yellow metal things that spring back into it's case... with the numbers on... :-P this would also save you a lot of hassle.....
We've bought 2nd hand washers and dryers during a 35 year timespan at our previous home. I think we went through 2 of each. Less than $100 per machine. Had to replace 1 refrigerator and bought from an open box store. No problems. Original dishwasher was replaced also bought from open box store and self installed. Just bought a new home with all new top of line appliances already here. In lifes game of conveniences with appliances we are big winners. Knock wood, or stainless steel!
They already tried to deliver it once and it didn’t fit in someones house, delivery guys will only carry stuff in and drop it they have a limlited amount of time per stop
I just came across your channel. We had that same problem when we got a fridgetwe got ours from my daughtdr who was moving and didnt need such a big fridge ht was a side ay side and our sons were able to help us we had to take our front door and stair rail off also the fridge doors as well to take it downstairs bcz thats where our kitchen is. We have a bilevel home. That was hard phew. you should get one of the cameras that you put on your head a go-pro that would work a lot better and be hands free❤😂
Measure all doorways and your space before you buy a fridge. Check your tools as you found out. Read the manual. The manual shows you how to take apart the front. Two screws and that kick plate comes off then likely four bolts on each wheel to remove it. Three screws that hold the door hardware on the fridge as well can be removed. If you take off the wheels make sure you have something to put it down onto like cardboard or somebody to put them back on before you put it back down or you're going to scratch your floors.
Wow. That was impressive. Got exhausted watching you crush this project! Loved that you talked about body placement to save your back. Never seen an oscillating tool. Great video. Subbed!
Your first step should have been buying a tape measure. Your problems really had nothing to do with it being an open box appliance, delivery guys aren't going to tear your house apart.
Steel tape would be better. And as soon as I saw your kitchen, I realized that it wouldn't fit. Those built in nooks suck as you can never find another fridge that size. My aunt and uncle ended up with a partial kitchen remodel as there were literally no fridges that would fit. The nook became a microwave counter with cabinets below and the fridge got relocated to the other side of the kitchen, which is absolutely not where they wanted it but was the only spot that had both water and power.
I used a U-Haul for mine as well, but we backed up to the dock and they put her Right in!!! 🥴Mine came wil a warranty.. And my son and I had a time getting it up my winding back deck and is the kitchen!!! We ended up removing the back door laying it down after taking off handles. 🥴🥴🥴NEVER AGAIN 😬
Seems like it would be blocking the doorway, but it's not. Now, I don't think it's the best place for a fridge. Not sure what the contractor was thinking when he built the home. Yes, the top cabinets are able to open. Great questions.
Sometimes, you have to know when and how to save money. Getting the home you want and a fridge with a couple of dents that (really don't matter) is ok.
This is why i have 2 fridges, one in my garage, and a counterdepth kitchenaid in my kitchen. I did all the measurements before making a purchase. Turns out that the regular depth would barely fit through my front dor even with the doors removed. I had no choice but to go with a counterdepth model, and even though it would fit throigh my entry door with the doors on it. I still tok them off to make tge unit lighter to move, and keep the doors from getting any dings or sctarches while moving it. Had a friend that did not do his measureing, bought a fridge. It was delivered but best buy just left it in the dining room, reason why was it was too tall to fit under the cabinets that were above the fridge. I just took the 2 cabinets off tge wall, and put them in the garage as there was nothing to cut off at the bottom. I may reinstall them an inch higher up, but would look crappy as not being in line with the other cabinets. Whirlpool is a great brand. My kitchenaid looks identical to your whirlpool, kitchenaid and whirlpool are the same companies. So folks do your homework before purchasing. Measure space fridge is going into as well as all doors you will be moving it through to get it to your said location.
Nice but I don't mess with Open Box Electronics, cause when something happens I don't wanna hear "It was an open Box so no warranty."Also I be thinking if it's used & somebody returned it after they took a piece out.
Really the most important thing after you tilt the fridge that much is to NOT turn it on after it is in place. You have to wait at least 5 hours to let the refrigerant settle. If you do not do this you might have a dead compressor.
Damn brother great video and family. But with all that work I'm tired and I'm just watching the video 😂😂😂. I think I would have just put my food in an ice cooler and buy ice and call it a day and tell the wife and kids I'm sorry 😂😂😂. But we do have a refrigerator like that as well but the company we purchased it from did pretty much the same thing you did to install it. I had to give them a pretty good tip because they worked their butts off. Awesome job.
Considering the reputation that new appliances have you probably don't want to tighten the bolts that much when you put everything back together since you might need to move it for the replacement in a couple of years.
