Queen Elizabeth II, distant cousin of her own husband, is head of state not only of the UK but many other countries. How does this fit in with the idea of meritocratic equality? Rue Britannia!

Everytime I see royal wedding footage I think of that South Park episode. "And now the scraping off of the pudding. Isn't she beautiful, scraping off the pudding with the grace of a butterfly. She rubs the pudding on her face. The prince now attempting to remove one of the princess's arms. As is of course the tradition. The princess screaming with pain. Everyone watching with anticipation. And the arm is off! Things are back to normal here in Canada. Time-honored traditions are once again-yehhss, the prince is sticking the princess's arm up his ass. There it goes. He's really making a good go of it. What a glorious day for Canada, and therefore of course, the world."

Quick point about the paintings/buildings/illiquid assets. The Vatican has similar artworks but lists them as being worth 1 dollar because they can never be actually sold as no one wants to go down as the pontiff who got rid of mutli-hundred years old sculptures.

Savile never escaped prosecution due to police failing to investigate formerly lodged allegations by victims, or by a local CPS "forgetting" to forward a file to London. Former Labour MP Greville Janner escaped prosecution 3 times (one being for having abused an 8 or 9 year old boy with the notorious paeophile Frank Beck) due to suspicious 'incompetence' from the police or CPS, before he died when a "trial of the facts" had just begun, over 30 men had submitted formal complaints to the police about being abused by Janner, most of them whilst they were in children's care homes. The media, particular the Times, Telegraph, and BBC, have frequently ran propaganda pieces claiming he is a victim of false allegations by either antisemitic or money hungry liars. It's disgusting. Janner should be the default example of the elite getting away with the most hideous crimes, but most people don't know just how damning the evidence against him is.

I just wanted to mention that the part about royal family being relatively cheap doesnt cover a lot of other costs. Like security and renovations of historical buildings that are used by royal family. The same goes for presumed indirect profits from tourism, France gets far more tourists and make much more money from them then UK and they dont have monarchs. Without the royals and Jane Austen what would make the UK a hot tourist spot? Fish and chips? Oxford/Cambridge? France also has better chateaus and castles. I'm American and, thus, have no stake in the British monarchy, but I find Princess Anne a far more compelling figure than Charles. I got to meet her when I was a teenager in the mid-1980s. My mom worked for a US company that was, at the time, part-owned by the royal family. Princess Anne came to visit, during which the company organized a large cookout; all the employees and their families were invited. We were instructed not to approach Princess Anne, that she would approach us if she wanted to interact. There were several hundred people in attendance, and my small group of school friends and I thought she'd never want to speak to a bunch of kids. So, myself and about 6-7 of my friends were just standing around talking. Princess Anne walks up and starts talking to us, but I was so awe-struck that I couldn't form a response. One of my friends answered her question, and I just stood there looking like an idiot. I remember thinking that she was so poised and elegant, the kind of poise and elegance that I could never hope to achieve, but she seemed very kind and sincerely interested.

Not entirely true regarding the executive powers of the monarch never having been used independently since 1834. During the constitutional crisis of 1911, the King refused to accept the resignation of the Prime Minister, thus forcing him to continue in office without the support of Parliament. 12:05 It's worth noting that the UK Royal Family's primary value is mostly rooted in landholdings that they have questionable rights and depend on the nitty gritty of how one goes about legally deconstructing the Monarchy. This is not to advocate anything but, rather, pointing out that working out a 'cost/benefit' hinges upon who gets what in the divorce and 'the people who claimed to be Divinely Chosen might have held unreasonable negotiating power and maybe shouldn't just get to keep literally everything' isn't exactly a legally untenable position.

Looking at the Monarchy from America I have to say I really like it and believe it to be useful. Here in America we attach almost religious reverence onto politicians. If we could divert feelings of patriotism and nation pride onto a person or a family that had no real power I think that would be a healthy thing.

The UK benefits substantially from the monarchy because of the income on the Crown Estate. Since 1760, the net income of it has been surrendered to the British treasury, and it amounts to approximately 1.6 Billion pounds. If the U.K became a republic that would end and the Royal Family would retain that income. So it more than offsets any payments by the U.K to them. Then thrown in the tourist dollars and they're a substantial win. So yes it is kind of weird, but it is enormously profitable to U.K citizens.

The French and Russians both offed their royals and yet the Palace at Versailles and The Winter Palace/State Hermitage Museum each receive far more visitor per year than Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace combined. All I'm saying is, if it's tourist dollars you want, precedent shows that your best choice is to kick the royals out and let the tourists in (I don't think the regicide is even a necessary component).

Versailles is an unequal comparison - it's grand and ostentatious - and very, very expensive. Versailles budget is over €100M per year - that's almost 3 times the amount spent on the entire UK monarchy just to keep one building tidy. Buckingham Palace is, to be honest, nothing special as a building - it's grey, dull, and the interior is bland. It brings special unique appeal though because it has a living connection to an active monarchy - it's part of a real, ongoing story. It's not just yet another dusty forgotten chateau which Europe has about 10,000 of already.

Fun fact, the reason that us Australians voted to keep the Monarchy is because there was a debate among supporters of a republic whether the President would be chosen by the political parties the same way that the PM and Governor General are now, or if it would be a popular vote for the president like the US. The Monarchist side of the debate managed to convince people that if they voted no to the referendum (which was based on the politically appointed president model) that they'd get another referendum later to be able to take a shot at getting a popularly elected president. However as soon as the "No" vote passed, the heavily-monarchist prime minister basically went "Right, well, clearly people don't want a republic, let's never speak of it again"
@trinidad17
@trinidad17 4 года назад
13:00 "if people are equal the monarchy doesn't make a lot of sense" but then you'll have to abolish all kind of government because people should have equal rights but for sure politicians can get away with many things the common folk cannot, and I guess that's not the point (as royalty and their court and are not legally treated the same as the plebes are) but it also makes sense to clarify that although people may have the same rights that doesn't mean all have the same roles.

When I was younger I was very pro-monarchy. I enjoyed the pomp and and I think it gave the country a lot of prestige and historical weight. But the older I get the less I feel that way. I think the real breaking point has been seeing William and Harry become husbands and parents, and with all the media attention on them and their families and the well-publicised conflicts I've come to the conclusion that royalty is actually pretty bad *for them*. I mean, there are a lot of constitutional and ideological points to make for or against the monarchy, but on a human level I think they and we would all be a lot happier if we just let them quietly sit things out and leave statecraft and politics to people who choose to be there at the top. At least the people we elect to rule over us clearly deserve our scorn and hatred, because only a real psychopath would ever run for office.
@kapparomeo
@kapparomeo 4 года назад
If you're worried about how "real psychopaths run for office" though, monarchy is actually beneficial in that respect. It's a check on ambition - even the most cynical and self-serving climber of the greasy pole has someone he can't pay off. In the monarchy you have at least one position in the state that by definition cannot be bought, by any level of corporate funding, electoral fraud or press subversion. The monarchy gives politicians a measure of humility - lots of politicians will of course tell you that they are mere "servants of the people", which is very easy to say when you're standing on a stage having a crowd of adoring followers chanting your name and singing songs after you, but rarely shakes out in practice. Being forced to say "yes your majesty" now and again reminds them that they are here to serve, not just fight for their own prestige.
@TheMattastic
@TheMattastic 4 года назад
@@kapparomeo I used to think that too, and in principle I think it seems reasonable, except for the fact that it doesn't appear to work. Being forced to bow has hardly appeared to be a restraining factor for any government within my lifetime. Humility is not abundant among the UK's ruling class.

@@TheMattastic To which I'd say, if you think it's bad now, look over the Atlantic and the madness their never-ending-election cycle puts them through every four years and imagine how much worse it could be. The Queen does have a levelling effect on politicians - one of her biggest fans was Harold Wilson, even though he was an Old Labour socialist he and the Queen got along really well, he always said that the Queen was the one person he could talk to in absolute confidence and honesty because the monarch was the only person who wasn't gunning for his job.
@TheMattastic
@TheMattastic 4 года назад
@@kapparomeo Nnnng, I'm unconvinced. The US is hardly representative of most republics. Their electoral politics is way too aggressive and reliant on big money and entertainment "news", and the president has way too much power. America's problems are mostly unique. And I'm glad Wilson got a lot of mileage from talking to the Queen, but that was a long time ago. I mean last year Johnson lied to the Queen's face without remorse, so really it sounds like the levelling effect she has on PMs is really just distilling how much respect they have for their responsibilities of office into a relationship with one person.
@kapparomeo
@kapparomeo 4 года назад
@@TheMattastic "lied to the Queen's face" would be a matter of interpretation, really. A lot of those sorts of criticisms are also dishonest and made in bad faith - not saying it's the case with you, but many of the people who were acting outraged over the prorogation last year were left-wingers who normally would be only too happy to mock the Queen except when it served their interest. If you want to settle these sort of constitutional arguments you won't get them sorted out in a republic, either - a written constitution just means we'll have even more litigation over every comma of the document than we do at the moment. I don't think the America comparison is inappropriate either - if it's unfair to compare all republics to their worst examples then it's also unfair to blindly assume a change of system will always be its best and most optimistic version too.

Do we really believe that people would stop visiting, say, Buckingham Palace, if the monarchy were abolished? It's not like you get to take a picture with the Queen. Versailles is a massive tourist destination even though the French very sensibly beheaded the owner 200 years ago. You fail to identify the most important role that the Monarchy actually has - it safeguard our democracy and acts as a counter balance to Parliament. There is a reason why the Armed Forces swear allegiance to the Monarch and not the Government or the people. It separates power to an apolitical organisation where the leader doesn't strive for power (unlike parliament). It has contributed to a relatively stable system of Government for 100s of years. In turn the Monarch is constrained by Parliament (the people) in a very clever counterbalance.

I mean we can say that "everyone is equal" or that we believe in meritocracy all we want; no objective look at our society would support these claims in any way. And the same is true in countries with a proud republican tradition like France or the USA. So the real choice is merely between a constitutional monarchy which wears its unjust hereditary power hierarchies on its sleeve or a liberal republic with false pretensions to equality in which these power hierarchies are hidden.

Then I googled it and someone mentioned that I should think of them as a tourist attraction, like a historic building or a monument. Then it clicked on my head and I began to understand it more. This video confirmed my thoughts on the matter. Btw unfortunately I only spoke to one English person in the whole country, all the other were tourists, that's one thing I regret, but I didn't find anyone and the guy that spoke to me just wanted change so he can use the bathroom,(and at first I thought he was trying to mug us... I didn't know why he wanted money to take a piss because in Greece there are free public restrooms).Fun times though, I would like to visit again England but go to some other place that is less of a tourist attraction.

How can a Greek lecture anyone on monarchies? You do realise that your entire republic is democratically illegitimate? There was never a free or fair vote on abolishing your monarchy. The military junta abolished the monarchy to secure its own power because the king in exile in Italy was organising resistance and mutinies in the navy, and then when civilian government was restored the referendum was corrupt - you had a vote where one of the candidates was forbidden from visiting his own country. The same goes for most of the world's monarchies, actually - few have ever been abolished by the actual will of the people, and almost all monarchies end in order to serve the interests of military dictatorship (e.g. Libya) or a wealthy elite (e.g. Brazil) to which the monarchy is an obstacle to power. Many of the others were destroyed by the imperialism of republican countries - the USSR's exploitation of Eastern Europe is one example, and the USA in Vietnam is another - they created a republic with another corrupt, illegitimate vote (President Dien ousted the emperor with more votes than there were registered voters) and the million deaths and decades on misery in South-East Asia can be traced back to their presidential puppet.
