Schadenfreude is a German word translated as 'shameful joy', or literally as 'harm-joy'.
Psychologists have separated feelings of Schadenfreude as being aggression-based, rivalry-based, and justice-based. It is essentially finding pleasure in the misfortune of others.
Here I briefly explain how Schadenfreude is utilised by reality TV to different extents.
The Birth Of A Nation (1915), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Red Dawn (1984), Die Hard (1988), You've Been Framed (1990 - Current), Bridezillas (2004 - Current), Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (2004-2014), My Super Sweet Sixteen (2005-2017), Dragon's Den (2005 - Current), Kitchen Nightmares (2007-2014), Real Housewives Of Beverley Hills (2010 - Current), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011), Headhunters (2011), Blue Ruin (2013)

Yeah they both had a repetitive structure to them, but the UK episodes are always like "You need to simplify your menu, use more local produce and be more appealing to local patrons" whereas in the US version the food is always inedible, the kitchen is full of dead rats and the restaurant owner is an unbearable narcissist.

The Housewives scene hurts even more, when you know that the woman was in a heavily abusive marriage at that time and was reacting so harshly because she was literally scared for her life when one of the other housewives made the severe beatings she was enduring public. She was scared her husband would kill her or harm her daughter. She was constantly hiding bruises with sunglasses and make-up and at one point had to undergo reconstructive surgery on her face.

I think a lot of "reality" tv (including stuff like "Jerry Springer", if that's still a thing) is the idea that "yeah my life sucks, but I finally found someone with a more pathetic life than me." With the bonus that, while our humiliation is mostly private, theirs is being broadcast to the masses. Or the healthier take may be "hmmm, maybe my life isn't so bad after all." ;)

this will sound silly, and it may even be a spoof, but in 2006 when the World Cup was in Germany, one of the channels in the UK did a humourous piece on German words and phrases. So, let's say you are having a discussion with someone, they come up with a point you don't have an answer for and thus 'win' the discussion. A few hours later though, you come up with the perfect reply, although you thought of it far too late. Is there a word for this situation?! I told you it was silly!

In Finland we have the word "sosiaaliporno" which translates fairly literally to social porn (who could've guessed?!). It's basically about sticking cameras to places that they have no business being in and people watching other peoples degradation for entertainment. I think it applies to most reality TV shows and the porn part of it is quite fitting. Though I find actual porn to be more honest, more real and overall healthier than reality TV in general. Also actual porn doesn't leave the same feeling of dirt and grime once it's over.

Yeah, and it's getting worse and worse. Listening to Radio Rock at work, one day they were talking about the Finnish Temptation Island and how the last season was full of 20-somethings that were there only to fuck strangers and that "the show lost it's meaning". Pretty damn funny considering the whole show is the posterchild of social porn. I have never watched it because the premise is god awful and even sticking pins under your nails is a better activity than watching that, but nevertheless the comment sounded hypocritical and tried to make the show seem actually useful in some way. As a side note, I wish they didn't cover shit like that on Radio Rock, fucking talk about anything but reality tv shit.

@9UWmember

@@Karl_Marksman It's hard for me to comment exactly as I'm not an expert in any language. But we do have a culture of being a bit straight forward. So unintentional offence can and does occur.

@LividImp 4 года назад
@鬼佬 - Gwai'lo - Yea, we love our deep fry. If you deep fry food properly you actually do not get much grease on it due to a thin steam layer between the food and the oil. Food only gets greasy when the oil is too cold or the food is left in too long. The oil in most fast food places is too cold due to the large quantities being cooked, which is why American deep fry has a bad reputation. But cooked properly it is sublime.

One interesting thing to note: the UK and US versions of Kitchen Nightmares are almost polar opposites. The UK version of Gordon Ramsay is thoughtful and reserved, and the storylines have much less "manufactured" drama. The US version portrays the restaurant owners/managers as garbage people most of the time, and the UK version portrays them as regular people with regular flaws.

Red Dawn is not a great example of this. There is only one montage in the middle of the film where the resistance of the Wolverines against the occupation forces is shot as a rousing, crowd-pleasing battle sequence. The first time they take up arms, it is against sightseeing Russian soldiers that the script by John Milius takes time to humanize. And the last shot fired in that sequence is an act of ruthlessness, upon a wounded young man who looks absolutely terrified. Nearly every time they take up arms, after that one montage, it ends with the diminishing group being hunted like animals, turning on one another, or being caught up in a battle that shrinks their personal vendettas to insignificance against the backdrop of the larger war being waged. And the last stand of the two main protagonists isn’t about revenge, or glory, it is about ensuring that someone, anyone, survives to tell their story. And again, the two military leaders they are up against in this sequence have been humanized in the script. We’ve seen the Nicaraguan officer show grief over the loss of his soldiers, and heard him compose, in his own words, a heartsick letter to his wife back home, wishing for an end to this war and his role in it. He also stays his hand, in a way we did not see from the two brothers up to that point. And we’ve seen the Soviet officer, brought in to (rather successfully) contain the activities of the partisans, issue a command to end the reprisals against civilians, which he can see are inspiring further resistance activities. It’s a smarter film than the critics who dismissed it as jingoistic propaganda have ever given it credit for. And one with a fairly nuanced depiction of both the resistance fighters and the occupying forces. Likely informed by not only the struggle then unfolding in Afghanistan (which Milius has referenced in interviews), but also by the partisan groups who fought in Eastern Europe from 1941 to 1945. Even the memorial shown at the end has been named Partisan Rock, which seems to acknowledge this influence.

@@patavinity1262 My apologies. I will try to be clearer. He doesn't "believe that you have to like a protagonist and dislike an antagonist" he doesn't say that. He said that for a LOT of films to work you have to have a like the protagonist. Sentence A "You have to like a protagonist for a film to work" Sentence B "For a lot of films You have to like a protagonist for a film to work" these do not mean the same thing. Sentence A is all encompassing Sentence B is not. I will add my own example - For lots of films to work you need sound. I am not saying for a film to work you have to have sound. To say that is pure philistinism. It's anti-artistic, simple-minded nonsense. But for LOTS of films work they need sound.

I saw a Master Class ad for Gordon Ramsay right before this video. Right after looking at the thumbnail and clicking on the video. Mind blown.

That's the Google algorithm, it's doing much more than that, if you aren't on a private browser and shop on Amazon while you RU-vid you'll likely get ADs related to your shopping history.

1:31 that's where you're already making a mistake though. Shadenfreude from what I have seen from German TV and know from my own culture's equivalent is only about misfortune, not actual crimes. That's dark/black humor. It's why rape jokes are also not schadenfreude, because it deals with an actual crime rather then someone stupidly tripping over a banana. At best, Shadenfreude is the border between slapstick and dark humor, but joking about such actual crimes is dark humor territory.

Yes yes yes that's all very interesting but WHAT ABOUT THE HIP TANG?!?!?!
@Activated_Complex
@Activated_Complex 4 года назад
Hiptang is currently sold out everywhere, so there’s no reason to advertise it. Some internet rumor about it curing COVID-19. Despite ominous warnings, including on the label, that such deliverance carries with it a price to be paid, blood for blood.

Good video, gave me something to think about. I wonder, though, whether you overlooked the important part that self-righteousness and self-satisfaction play in the observed humiliation of people we've never met. These confrontational reality shows make me uncomfortable, and I'm skeptical of the rosey endings usually depicted.
