The war in Ukraine has obviously been catastrophic and horrific, but it's worth considering its wider implications - especially how it could impact the French Election which will decide the leader of Europe's biggest military force. The good news for President Macron? Well Ukraine made his victory almost guaranteed...

@@odycz NATO didn't escalate anything. NATO was not actively searching for new members remember. NATO's fault is for leaving door open. The rest was done by Russia and her aggressive politics. At least historically none of the nations around it would trust it (and they were right) and would search a protection from it as soon as they could. NATO provided the protection and didn't shut the door before their nose which mind you would not have guaranteed their neutrality. Neutrality was never Russia's intent. Russia intent was always bringing them into its own sphere of influence. With Putin Neutrality was never an option. If you think otherwise then you are incredibly naive.

Again, Germany has not tripled their military budget. Germany did spend around 50 billion dollars on defense in the past (about 1.4% of GDP), has now commited to to increase it to >2% of GDP which would increase it to about 80 billion dollars, and plans on a one time spending of a 100 billion dollars. These 100 billion are not part of the yearly budget, they are just a fund where the army can draw from to fix current issues and once the money is gone it's gone. It's also important to point out that Macron was lucky in that it was France's turn to hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU when the war broke out. A tenure that lasts six months and is probably part of why he's had such a prominent role in the diplomatic relations between Russia and the EU. If it wasn't France's turn, those calls to Macron would likely have gone to another EU leader, the one who was in that position. Also it's also worth noting Macron also said that Russia's security concerns are maybe legitimate, which is why Putin might be more likely to talk to him over other leaders who haven't given him the same respect for his point of view. Even if they vehemently disagree on a lot of things, namely, the war in Ukraine.
@MrLecancre
@MrLecancre 2 года назад
The thing is, EU Council presidency has nothing to do with what you underline. First, the EU Council presidency only brings some advantages - pushing certain subjects over the table. It doesn't give any official or unofficial mandate to represent the EU, nor Macron is the "president of the EU" (which btw is a non-existant office). But most important : having the France presidency of the EU Council was a choice (it's one of the first time a EU country that has ongoing major elections does not postpone it's presidency when it's coming on the same time). But you get a point, elections pushed Macron to be even more proactive on a diplomatic level. Furthermore, the proeminence of France during this crisis (it is not really proeminent, but let's say it) has more to do with the French traditional ideas for Europe : an integrated defence, more sovereignty, more energy independence. It's like France is somehow in a position of "that's what I told u during aaaaaaall this time". To Germany, for example.
@hannahsmart4494
@hannahsmart4494 2 года назад
@@MrLecancre It doesn't make him the president of the EU, no, I don't believe I said that but if I did that's not what I intended, but it does give Macron and his government a fairly significant role in being able to try get Europe to present a cohesive, united front. Especially given one of France's goals for the presidency is to push an agenda of European sovereignty, the war in Ukraine has certainly only highlighted a need for that. The EU website on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union even states that the presidency works in close coordination with the high representative of the Union for foreign affairs and security policy. Meaning while the holder of said presidency doesn't have an official role, they do have a fair amount of influence when it comes to the bloc's foreign policy. It's not the only reason Macron had such a significant role, like they mentioned in the video, after Merkel he emerged as kind of the leader of Europe in a sense, but it does actually play a role.
@KnarfStein

The other thing that you didn’t mention, but I think is very real in the French psyche, is that they sense that the leadership of Europe is theirs on a plate unless they do something really stupid. In an uncertain world, suddenly power, food and military security become important - France is 70% domestic nuclear self sufficient, the only EU country that is self sufficient in food production and it’s only nuclear and serious conventional power. The U.K. has excluded itself but, helpfully, is a very close military ally - much closer than most realise. Germany is on the back foot in a big way, over dependent on Russian fuels and the Chinese market, unproven leadership, 80 years of pacifism and a huge military gap to catch up on - all of its assumptions of drawing the east and west together with Germany at the centre are gone. Up till now the French have mocked Macron for his imperiousness (nickname “Jupiter”) but if he can make it real and give them (back) their national pride and put them where (in their eyes) they should be, leading Europe, they’ll love him for it.

@@inserttexthere4070 But what is it about his domestic policy that is so bad or that would make you think that someone else could do so much better? @@davidpaterson2309 I don't really like the idea that we shouldn't be voting for small candidates... I'm still very young, and don't know the ideal answer (or that much about how the world works in its very complex details). The answer I would give - and that sentiment is shared by many in France, often sadly turning them to extremist and populist fairytales - is that I just don't like what he stands for in terms of economy. He doesn't want to increase tax on inheritance for example, even though economists share a consensus (which is quite rare from my understanding) that it HAS to be done, or we will keep slowly coming back to the rigid class society of the pre-WW1 era. Even some report from a gov department says it... Or the fact that he says that French people will have to work longer hours, even though we have an unemployment rate of over 7% (go figure)! Those are some of the reasons from the top of my head, if you want to we could gomore in depth about it :) Btw where are you from?

The war in Ukraine also helped a presidential candidate in my country because of similar circumstances (and elections is taking place soon) - Having a larger, more powerful neighbor that tries to take over territories - Seeing the state of Ukraine instilled fear that we shouldn't face the same fate - We felt that Western Powers didn't do quite enough to end the conflict as soon as possible. This particular candidate is more diplomatic (peace) while others wanted military alliances (war) Unlike Ukraine, we don't have neighbors to run to. So a war will really cause a bloodbath. Everyone was freaking out about two and a half far right candidates (it's debatable for Pecresse) having a chance to make it to the second round, and everyone was making fun of the left for not being able to unite itself around one person and therefore losing any chance to go to the second round. It would just be funny that the opposite happens, all the far right candidates share the diminished far right vote and the left voters manage to gather around Melenchon. While focus has firmly shifted away from Partygate, and Boris is making all the right noises in Westminster, I don't feel he has acquired the image of a world class statesman. Putin talked to Macron 11 times, he has talked to Boris how many times?

Why did Pecresse flop though? I am really curious about it yet nobody mentions it. When she was picked over Bertrand, the polls for her skyrocketed, then since early February she just ended up falling.

This is because her first presidential meeting was kinda catastrophic. During her speech, she didn’t seem natural at all, she seemed to play the role of a candidate instead of being spontaneous. She spoke with the exact same tone during 1 hour and half, so it was boring. Cultural references weren’t that pertinent and she tackled far-right topics like the Grand remplacement theory (Great Replacing theory) which is usually tackled by the far-right ex-writer, polemist and journalist Éric Zemmour. So people didn’t get her references. She even tried to rectify her words but it ends contradicting herself. Politically, she said she was like Macron. But as Macron is also quite unpopular (Gilets Jaunes, retirement reforms, Benalla affair, Chalençon affair, Covid-19 handling, different diplomatic crisis…) many people think it’ll be the same with her.

Macron has been the de facto leader of the EU since Merkel left. He's a competent politician. Europe is lucky to have him.

yeah, I agree with a lot of his foreign policy, but I think his domestic ones are not very popular with the people. at least from what I've heard, someone will have to correct me on that.

@@goganii Under his presidency, France has transformed to become more business friendly. There are many more tech startups. Unemployment is lower than it was before Macron became president, despite covid. The French economy has recovered among the fastest in Europe, faster than Germany!
