The story is based on Ukrainian folklore and written by Ukrainian-born Gogol. Even though it was produced in the soviet era, it does not depict anything soviet or Russian.

@@olhasum4721 Yes, Gogol loved Ukraine so much that he died in Moscow. "Thank God I'm Russian" - is that his quote? And if you read his work "Taras Bulba", which is dedicated to loyalty to the Motherland, there is a quote about the RUSSIAN land. Yes, there is practically no connection, but not with Russia, but with Ukraine))
