The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain's first TV appearance, recorded over twenty years ago, in 1988. The show was the BBC's Pebble Mill at One, and the clip includes the tunes 'Red Cross' and 'Presto Tango', and also an interview with George Hinchliffe.
The current line-up of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is: George Hinchliffe, Kitty Lux, David Suich, Richie Wiliams, Hester Goodman, Will Grove-White, Peter Brooke Turner and Jonty Bankes.
The very first line-up (in 1985) included Richie Williams (in his first stretch with the Ukes), along with Bob Loveday (of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra), David Bowie (bass), Marshall Stapleton, Paul Griffiths, Andy Astle (co-founder), Jo Brindley (co-founder), Kitty Lux (co-founder and director) and George Hinchliffe (co-founder and director).
On this BBC clip from 1988, the line-up is: George Hinchliffe, Kitty Lux, David Suich, Andy Astle, James Marsh, Liane Kordan, Marshall Stapleton, Nony Ardill, Mary Fitton, Caroline Fitton and Simon Edwards.

I am 72 years old . Love music ( to listen to ) I have never been able to play an instrument. Through a over 60,s health and keep moving ,type programme . I saw an introduction to UKULELE. So with encouragement from my wife I thought I would give it a go. Then on YOU TUBE I found these guys. I could go on and on .....but this has been a great opening . I can't read music but I can get great joy from my UKE

Keep watching them. There are a number of ukulele orchestras about in various countries but these guys are the originals and the best (though there are fewer members these days)

It's a guitarron, a Mexican fretless, shortneck three-course bass guitarwith a high 'action' (string height), invariably played by the shortest member of the mariachi band. Fairground Attraction used one a lot as well.

Ponytail guy has a pony tail, just shorter - and with much shorter and darker hair. Second row left. I'd recognize his profile anywhere; Iove his face!

@UTBESUX Dave Bowie (not that one) is an ace bass player from Leeds. You can see him playing double bass with them on the other BBC clip from 1990. He is re-joining the Ukulele Orchestra in Nov at London's Cecil Sharp House when the Ukes are playing some settings of Cecil Sharp's folk music. As a footnote, the other David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust etc) recently praised the Ukulele Orchestra for their "wonderfully clever" arrangements, so he may well be a ukulele player after all.

The BBC's "Pebble Mill at One" lunchtime programme, from Birmingham - great programme, why did they "Do-it-in ?". They were always doing innovative things . . . seem to recall they got the RAF to land a Harrier in the car park there on one occasion.

@wetmonday Yes, of course, Dave is still there - now with long hair. I am not aware of a live performance, but the ukulele playing for the title song of the latest Madness Album "The Liberty of Norton Folgate" was contributed by some members of the UOGB.

Thank you so much for the time you put into looking this up, I have been searching for that for months seeing only few people playing it, but no information on the actual instrument, I think it would be easier to build your own than to find one so theres a project needing to be done, thank you again for the info.

When did they start singing and adding more showmanship and comedy to their act I wonder? These early clips are great, love seeing familiar members when they were young(er) but it feels like less then half an act. The music is great but the UOGB really brings so much more to the table these days.

Is that Simon Edwards, as in Fairground Attraction's bassist? The bass player here is playing a guitarrón (Mexican acoustic bass guitar), which Simon used to play in FA (and on David Gray's album "White Ladder"), so I guess it's him.

It's a "guitarrón" - a Mexican acoustic bass guitar. I'm amazed anyone can play one at all; they're about 20-30cm deep, and the strings are like ropes! (I'm pretty sure the player is Simon Edwards - he of Fairground Attraction; sessions with Billy Bragg, David Gray, etc.?)
@tunhale
@tunhale 3 года назад
Indeed it is Simon Edwards in this clip. Simon played with the Uke orchestra until Fairground Attraction started gigging and they "poached" him from the orchestra.

@meteort7 Nooo, definitely no Will and no Jonty. Both don't appear on any Ukes album before "A Fist Ful of Ukuleles". Will was far younger than the guy next to Dave back in 1988... And as we all know, Jonty is the new boy in the band...

Absolutely brilliant. But watching adults playing, what appears to be tiny children's musical instruments, is producing cognitive dissonance in me. Are the children at home screaming their eyes out because Mum and Dad have nicked their toys? Great to see them still going after 31 years -- although I'm not sure I recognize any of them.
