Depends on what you like: 1. Most GRIT and POWER: Rolls Royce by far 2. Nice turbo WHINE and classic 777 takeoff sound: Pratt & Whitney 3. Quietest and MELLOW RUMBLE: GE I like em all... no way to say one is better than the other! :)
turbo whine really? Maybe compressor spool or turbine harmonics GE is 18% more powerful than the RR, larger diameter. P&W a "classic" 777 sound? The original 2 engines on the 777 were R&R and GE, I guess that would be the "Classic" sound huh?
Scott Anthony I'm going to agree with you. Noiseiest and sounded almost like they were straining, are the RR. PW is similar to the GEs but with that classic buzz sound, in a bigger, slightly muffled way. The GEs seem to handle the flight with ease. No straining, and are quieter.
Planes don't use take-off power for the whole flight. :P This video isn't comparing cruise sounds. The GE-90 has more excess thrust, so it tends to take-off and climb with a lower throttle setting (de-rated).
I agree but PW has a vacuum cleaner sound on Taxi this is particularly evident if you tried Korean Air B777-200/er & B777-300 with prestige lie flat seats note that some of the B777-200/er have A380 seats
P&W all the way!!! It wasn’t included in the clip, but a very cool offset pitch hum happens when the throttle is increased. This happens on most P&W engines. And that low rumble is just amazing!
G.E. sounds like it has the most power left if demand rate is ever called upon. That hammering mechanical sound of the Rolls is comforting at take-off, also. I didn't even know that P&W were still in the game!
The Trent 800 is incredibly loud. I only realized that when a AA 777 flew over my house last night. I live near Paine Field so I am used to the GEnxs and GE90s, but when I heard the Trent I thought a 747 or something was flying over me!
1. General Electric 90 has a Unique Powerful engine roar 2. The RR Trent 800 is a Powerful Beast Roar with high sound 3. Pratt & Whitney 1000 has a noisy engine roar
1. GE90 - Sounds smoother and more harmonious than the Rolls Royce and Pratt & Whitney. 2. Rolls Royce Trent - Tuneful spool up but a bit coarse sounding on takeoff power, ends up sounding like an annoying buzz after a while. 3. PW4000 - Still sounds nice, spool up is cool but quietens down a bit too much. They all sound good, but that would be my verdict.
+Drive On! The GE did not have the roar because it wasn't on full power. All though it is a lot quieter than the other two when actually at full power, it still does sound like a buzzsaw just a bit.
How to choose your favorite engine:*For overall refinement, quietness, and unbelievable massive gobs of power- GE-90*For amazing sound and a satisfying "deep growl"- PW4000*And for the classic loud "buzz saw" sound (which I find annoying but other people seem to love it)- Trent 800
They're all great, but I've always been partial to Pratt & Whitney ever since I first heard the JT3-powered 707 and DC-8 when I was a kid. The 747's original JT9s were awesome sounding as well. Terrific video.
Correct but you're based in Manila Philippines or Cebu City the only route to use that engine is going towards Incheon Airport because Manila or Cebu to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific is a Trent 800 route.
Awesome video! They all sound so different. I thought the Rolls Royce would be the quietest, but it seemed the loudest to me. I like the smooth sounds of the GE, very nice!
I've been waiting for this video! I love all of them, but the Trent 800 and GE90 are both the best for me. Since the PW4000 is less popular, I haven't heard it as much, but it is almost as good. The best spool-up sound is the GE-90.
***** They each have their ups and downs, imo. The PW4000 has a hair-raisingly amazing spool up,the GE90 has a nice, low pitch and generally really good sounds, same goes for the T800 except that it has a pretty high pitch. This is the world's hardest choice, and I would go fully Feltham Magistrates Court on this xD
I'm all about loud & obnoxious so gonna have to go w/the RR Trent. I will say though, despite the GE90 bein' the most powerful outta the 3, shockingly it sounded like it was the quietest in my opinion. Enjoyed the vid as always!!
Well, the GE got the aircraft to rotation the quickest, & full 5sec faster, but it was almost TOO quiet...The RR sounded like the PW on steroids, almost TOO loud...so for that, I think the best overall SOUND has to go to the PW. Great vid btw!!!
In fact GE90 produces more thrust than the new GE9X which is already out and installed on the 777X. It's far more quiet and more fuel efficient and 59 cm bigger. It produces 109,000lbs of thrust and the GE90 produces 118,000lbs of thrust.
You won't need a jumbo jet to fly around the world anymore, with the thrust of the GE9x. A twin-engine wide-body will get you anywhere on the planet, and cheaper! Cannot wait to see those 777x's at airports for the first time.
In order: 1st GE90 1st Trent 800 3rd PW4000 (First two are joint first. The main reason that the PW4000 is last is because the growl is not so overly aggressive like with the GE90 or Trent 800.)
GE90: Nicest most gentle sounding engine ever PW4000: Tries to roar like a lion but growls like one instead. Rolls Royce Trent 800: Most violent sounding engine ever
ge 90 sounds safer a full power , the other 2 engines sound like they are really forcing or wearing out at full throttle, this is where having a bigger motor makes takeoff safer
Pratt and Whitney still wins in my book. The best-sounding spool-up and roaring thrust sound. Rolls Royce just has way too much of that obnoxious growl, like a dentist's tool on low speed vibrating through your skull. The GE90 has a great whine and overall most pleasant background sound, so I put it at #2.
GE 90 very smooth thru all rpm range, the others especially the Trent is very rough especially at high rpm.I thought the PW was noisy but the Trent more vibrant at high rpm. GE HANDS DOWN
tough choice, as the GE90's sweet whine is endearing, but I've just gotta give it up for the PW4168A. There's just something about the way it roars like a jet on take off, then, gradually changes over to that deep-throated leonine snarl as the blade-tip speeds on the main fan go supersonic.... A./
The initial spool up on the GE90 is music to my ears and it's such a quiet sounds, but I dont know what it is about the RR Trent 800's humming sound that just grabs my attention. It's a beautiful sound but the GE90 is just so much more iconic.
"is the best sounding" That is an opinion, not a fact. I personally don't like the GE-90 because it doesn't have a buzz, only loud whine and something that sounds to me like a washing machine rumbling.
It would be super fun to be the airline execute to choose which Power Plant that will be placed under the wing. I shy away from P & W. So I would choose the GE90 even though I love Rolls - Royce.
The Rolls Royce sounds loud and powerful the Pratt & Whitney Sounds slightly more refined and the GE90 is so quiet! Are there major thrust differences between these engines?
Those new GE engines are QUIET, WOW!!! My fav would have 2 be the RR though...I can't get enough of that classic engine growl. Even though it's clearly the loudest of the group, that sound is so appeasing to my ears it'd probably put me 2 sleep, ha. As always, thx 4 doin' these comps. Keep posting & I'll keep watching...Nate- Pittsburgh, PA ;-)
