The Ultimate Cheapskate on LIVING SMART with Patricia Gras

Author and lecturer Jeff Yeager (dubbed The Ultimate Cheapskate on NBCs The Today Show) advises us how to structure our relationship with money. With many facing economic hardship, Yeagers guidance is especially relevant. At the backbone of living cheaply is deciding what enough for you is. Using a humorous and practical approach, and by sharing from his own experience (Yeager himself was able to retire at age 46 by decreasing his dependency on money), he shows us how you can learn to enjoy life more by spending less. Jeff: In general, the least expensive solutions happen to be the greenest. I agree with him on this and I abide by it. For example, I don't buy some "green" cleaning products, I simply use baking soda on everything.

I live in the UK. You can buy broccoli for 20p. Carrots cost about 40p/kg. A 1kg bag of porride is 79p, pasta is about 90p/kg. Most fruit is under £2/kg. A packet of nuts is between 80p-£2. Beans are cheap and a small portion of meat every day won't break the bank. Healthy food is very cheap. Most people associate healthy food with heavily processed and marketed food products. They aren't even healthy and are often laden with sugar. I don't even care about cooking and making fancy dishes. The diet will seem bland to most people but once you get used to it, you function much better physically and mentally on wholefoods. Your cravings for taste no longer control you, another addiction kicked. Plus saves so much time because you don't have to cook much. I realise that cooking is also a cultural thing so people may not view food only as a source of fuel but as a pleasure but for me it works great.

Some of my best childhood memories were when the power was out due to snow and we would all sleep in the room with the fireplace. We enjoyed cooking in the fireplace. Can't say my dad enjoyed it because he worried about things like sump pump, flooding basements and taking care of the animals.

U have to remember that when u buy a house, you buy a school, so staying in a small "starter home" often means living in a part of town that is much lower income. The smartest thing to do is buy the smallest house in the best neighborhood, so ur children go to good schools.

I don't know how much Yeager makes through interviews and and book sales, however, I am aware of his committment to helping others in need. Hopefully, an impressive portion of his proceeds go to this social sector. The book carries sound advice and let's face it.....we Americans are relentless in our pursuit of absolutely everything of material wealth. Good job, Jeff!

This guy is putting the proper meaning of cheapskate into peoples minds, he is also probably a millionaire due to how little he spends rather than how much he earns alone. He has been a cheapskate all his life and with this, it's obvious that he isn't going to just give away what he puts so much effort into saving so he must have it all put away somewhere. This guy is great : D

the only good thing about spending less is having more money and money in this country means security and less worry. Once you go out and go buy things and go into debt you are always worried and stuff. Its bad for your health.d Its not spending that is bad. Its bad spending that is bad. Buying useless junk that has no value. Thats bad. Good spending is buying up land, which is what I do.

Remember before the 2007-08 Financial Crisis? Everyone goes around Hyping that Debt is good. That leveraging your assets to borrow money to buy bigger houses, newer cars is the way to go. Now look at where Americans are.

For some reason I think you're right about that. But we don't need to wait for that sort of thing to happen, We can tell our neighbors about this sort of thing and help them out of debt and such. Are you familiar with the Foxfire books? They're about people who lived in the country side and although they lived simply they sounded a lot happier to me.

He makes good points, but red meat is not unhealthy. You can save money by getting cheap cuts, eating 'nose to tail,' and buying in bulk. A lot of us can't eat grains (gluten), and legumes are harsh on the intestines (lectins). This is why Keto and Paleo have exploded in popularity. All those "healthy" grains and legumes have caused leaky gut syndrome (intestinal permeability) and diabetes, obesity (carbs). Not to mention that most grains are GMO and soaked in pesticides - same with fruit and veg. And organic is still very expensive. So, no, eating what mainstream medicine recommends is not healthy, and much less is it cheap (if it is organic).

@stewartx5 That's a truly stupid comment. 1] He may or may not be paid well, but whatever he's paid, he stretches it very far. 2] He never claims to be an industry spokesperson, not that that means anything. 3] He never tries to convince people to earn low wages; only to use the wages they do earn wisely. By following his steps, many people can rid themselves of the habits that keep them one paycheck away from poverty. 4] Stop being a foolish naysayer and listen. (Are you a stroke victim?)
