Hello friends!
Welcome to a post completion review and ultimate comparison between round and square drill diamond painting kits! I completed "Twilight Vibes" in both round AND square drills, the very first offering of such from Diamond Art Club. They are currently testing out offering kits in both drill shapes to choose from, and may roll this out more widely in the future. I thought it would be helpful to complete BOTH versions of "Twilight Vibes" in order to do a true comparison of working on a kit in these two drill shapes. We even use the scientific method to test out one of the most commonly held beliefs of many diamond painters: "Square drill kits take longer to do than round drill kits." What do you think??

It looks to me that the round drill color is more vibrant and richer ❤ and I do like how it twinkle too

I’m glad there are others that were thinking like me, that the rounds seem sharper. Before you stated it, I was guessing that the one on the left was the square painting, to my surprise, that wasn’t the case. I’m excited about that, because I prefer rounds above squares. There really ISN’T that much difference between the two pictured here, maybe because it’s a cartoonish picture? I don’t know. I’m just excited to see that rounds do turn out awesome!

I think the newer DAC square drills do that line of shimmer effect, but back when the square drills had two different styles of facets they did more of a twinkle like the round drills. I love how uniform the new drills are but they lose that twinkle effect.

I have always said that rounds are more sparkly and squares are more shimmery... this kind of confirms my thoughts! Thanks!!! I would LOVE to do a comparison like you did.. if I ever get the opportunity, I'll share my data (I'm a bit of a nerd myself)...although my time would be much higher because I'm a single placer and I understand you are the Queen of multi-placing 🙂 Thanks for another great video!

This video is a must watch for everyone in the DP community! I realized that difference because when I bought the canvas I started working last week I used a reference to get the best size, and my reference was a finished canvas of round drills. I went with the same size but got waaaay more details than I was expecting bc I chose square drills so it was a sweet surprise. Ps: where I live is very common that companies offer multiple size options and both square and round drills, so we have to be careful to choose the best one for that particular image. I went with 50x60cm and it'll look gorgeous when finished

Awesome video! The spacing of rounds always gives a more airbrushed softer effect to the artwork. I suppose that's the coloring that is visible between the drills. Like you I can't pick which I like better. I do time my diamond paintings and It's consistent that squares take a bit longer than rounds to complete. I have never done the same cavas twice but speaking as a seasoned diamond painter (I've completed 253)--I must say that the same size in squares will take a few hours longer to complete. I rarely sweat drill shape when shopping. If I love the picture I will snag it. If given a choice I lean towards squares for landscapes and rounds for anything else. .

I love numbers too. Myself am obsessed with keeping time how much it takes to complete paintings. I could not resist and used your data of both methods to calculate that you place round drills 1.14 times faster than square drills (number was the same for both time comparison methods you used!!!). first method you took 1.60 seconds for round and 1.83 for square to place 1 drill and in the second method you took 1.54 for round and 1.76 for square.

Katie, thanks for doing this comparison. I prefer squares to rounds, but I enjoy both and I like to go back and forth between them. I was surprised that I liked the finished paintings equally in round and square. I like the idea of choosing drill shape and if one is sold out, there is the option to buy the other shape and still get a beautiful canvas. ❤

I think I will always prefer a round over square as long as I can get the detail in the rendering to look nice yet not be a massive painting. I just like the way the rounds sparkle. The shimmer on a square is its own kind of beauty. But if I had a choice, it would always be round

I didnt work on a square canvas so far because im new to this craft. I was curious about the finished look between both variations. So thank you very much ❤ i feel like on round drills it looks slithly darker because you can see still parts of the printed canvas. On lighter colors like the light blue part on the left side you can see it. The square drills got like a smoother transition from one color to another. While on round drills it looks for me slightly off because you still see the darker blue from the canvas. I guess if i see a canvas i would like to work on and there is a lot of light colors with many color changes i would tend to go for squares ☺️
@tankersgal
@tankersgal Год назад
When comparing round to square drills I have always felt like round drills make for a "softer" look to the finished painting, some might call it more fuzzy or blurry. With square drills you seem to get more detail in the finished product, it looks less pixilated to me. I enjoy doing both types, but I usually order my snack size/palate cleanser kits in rounds and my bigger kits in squares. How long they take to finish isn't a factor for me, this is my way of relaxing and letting my mind wander. Finishing is a sense of accomplishment but also kind of sad, especially if it was a kit I particularly enjoyed

Thanks, Katie!! I love that DAC chose to offer the exact same rendering and drill count in both shapes, and instead changed the image size. Now we know the rendering and drill count is what determines the amount of detail, not just the drill shape 💖

I know alot of people love having the choice but I don't lol it stresses me out and gives me so much anxiety. I had planned to get round for this one because even in the images posted online the rounds looked more colorful somehow. I went with square instead because I was assured they were the same color drills and I'm not so great at getting rounds straight. After seeing yours completed I prefer how the rounds look because i got it for my toddlers room. I feel like I made the wrong choice now 😆

Why does the round look so much brighter? Is it just the light?
@DiamondsandWashi
@DiamondsandWashi Год назад
Good question! Maybe because of how faceted the drills are, or the canvas that shows behind/around the round drills? It’s possible it’s the lighting but I tried to keep it as level as possible but I’m sure I wasn’t perfect.

This video and information was so interesting! Both beautiful. I too thought the rounds looked sharper so I thought they were the squares so was very surprised to see the reverse. I don't know which I prefer! I enjoy rounds and squares fairly equally at this time. The shimmer and the sparkle are both beautiful. I pick the project by how much I like the rendering and colors not by whether they are round or squares. I find placing squares fun and I usually do those with single Placer whereas rounds I tend to use multiple players more often. Bottom line I'm very happy to see that both squares and round are equally beautiful in my eyes at least so um not worried about picking which I like best. Thank you Katie for a fun video and taking the time to do such a detailed comparison!

I appreciate how thorough you are, I find it so helpful! 😊 Thank you for the work and time you dedicated to this. I would agree that the kits more recently released seem to include less drill supply which feels a bit uncomfortable; however its also true that previously we often had a generous amount remaining after completion. Perhaps DAC is trying to find the best balanced option?

I love the sparkle on the rounds but my preference is squares. The squares fill the space whereas the round leaves all those gaps. I know it’s not REAL obvious unless you have a light behind it, but for me, the squares or more satisfying. That being said, I still do both. Working in a round version now. 😊

I have been swamped lately, end of schoolyear crazy, but I really wanted to catch this video. Thanks for a great side-by-side comparison! I think the additional space and slightly lighter background color of the canvas versus the drills, gives a lighter appearance.

These turned out beautiful! Like you, I need both Diamond shapes in my collection! I personally think I’m faster at rounds and I am still practicing the multiplacing with squares. Thanks for the really thorough review. It's like the round appears bigger or closer and more vivid. But the square is finer. This helped me decide that for me, like what you said, for big paintings like landscapes or big fantasy ones that are elaborate, I would choose squares. Plus it seems rounds look more pixelated. Agree that the rendering on both is identical.

Thank you for the comparison. I love that DAC rendered both in the exact same detail by expanding the size of the round canvas. I wish others would do this rather then adepting the amount and detail to the size of a square . So people always say go bigger if going with round. I agree with you on which to use with each type of drill though. I really hate having to pick out the drill type and canvas size. I hope that DAC continues this same process with up coming pictures. Being a nerdy perfectionist I would go with round knowing that the rendering would come out the same even if they charged slightly (you notice I said slightly) more for the round, because the squares takes me so much longer. I love detail so I’ve gone with squares but I think I would prefer rounds if I could get the same detail. Yes they have a different texture that translates like you said to a different perspective on the picture because of the light play but more relaxing for rounds for me then squares. Just me saying. Peace and love abide with you 💕

Good morning Katie, I like both canvases. The one on the left colors are more intense. If I had a choice, I would choose round. This means my OCPD would be less of a bother for me. Love statistics, in the summer between third and fourth grade, for my Dad's birthday I did all the statistics on every baseball player on every league, including Japan and Canada. My Dad was quite pl with my completed project. Also, learn to do the same thing with Thoroughbred horses. Need to know if you are going to bet the ponies. Thank you for the comparison . Excellent review. I was a bit surprised that the left hand canvas was a round as I always felt square drill canvases gave the better effect. There definitely is more of a twinkle with the rounds. With other companies who offer the same canvas in both round and square, I know now why the square drills don't always fit neatly together like DAC's square canvases do - it's a size thing!

I think both came out nice. I am leaning towards the round a bit only because the colors looked richer, but perhaps that was the lighting? Anyway, I am partial to squares because I struggle with getting rounds straight. The perfectionist in me gets frustrated and I often don’t find it fun. But thank you for your time and thoughts. I am a bit in the camp of wanting DAC to just choose for me, but that’s just me.

Artwork on the wall is usually viewed from at least 60 cm. So it’s hard to film what they’ll look like on the wall, but your experiment verifies what I expected: I prefer round drills when the shapes in the art are angular, and round drills when curved. It is tremendous that you did this and filmed to share.

I find with round drills, particularly with large areas of colour blocking that my rows are more likely to become crooked. I am working on DAC’s Springtime Wonder (your favourite: fox) in square drills and I think it is the newest canvas I have worked on with the incredibly uniform drills. They are so much easier to keep on the straight and narrow. I just finished Kitty Cuddles in round and I spent an awful lot of time straightening up the rows! The softer look of round drills looks amazing I think for fantasy type canvases or dreamy subjects where perhaps the square look best for clear and sharp portraits or landscapes. Great video Katie( thanks for all your hard work. 🌸🤗

Lovely comparison! You have so much patience to dp both! I was just thinking about round vs squares as I was staring at my round dp in a dim lit room and the shimmers of my round dp is way more magical than my square dps. So for me, I prefer round for the final shimmery sparkly effect AND the shorter amount of time for completing a round dp 😊 If DAC offered both options on all of their kits, I would pick round drills 100% so I can complete more kits faster. Tbh, the square drills' shine look flat to me compared to the round drills. HOWEVER, up close, a completed square dp looks better than its round counterpart bc there are no gaps. Then again, these things are meant to be looked at from a distance, so for me, I would love if DAC offered round drills for every kit! 🎉

@DiamondsandWashi
@DiamondsandWashi Год назад
It’s not quite as stark in person but there is definitely a difference. Perhaps because the rounds are slightly larger and more faceted, and also because of the colors of the canvas that show around the drills? I tried to keep the lighting level but I’m definitely not perfect ☺️

It could make a difference when you have already worked on a section and kind of know which drills go where… 😊 But again, thank you for the video I loved it! 😃👍🏼

Thanks. I am doing a picture converted into diamond painting. It will be squares.

Im like you, i dont mind either. I like placing square drills so probably have more square than round. The picture appears more defined in the round compared to the square. I like the shimmer on the round too but at the same time i like the closeness of the drills on the square 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😂

Squares - FTW :)) They look neater and they seem, to me a t least, convey more details.

Went to my purchases and all 5 of mine only come in squares anyway , but yea the rounds actually look really vibrant!

What would be your opinion for doing like a personal photo? Not just a picture they did but like a family picture.

I like the twinkle of rounds, but I much prefer the application of squares. I'll choose squares when given the choice.

The round drills seem to look much richer and more vibrant than the square. Is that true when looking at them in person?

It’s not quite as stark in person, but the effect is a little different for sure!

For me, I notice that with squares I can't multiplace. I have to do them singularly. I can use either tweezers or the placer with squares but I just can't multiplace. 😭 That is the one major difference for me. I began DP'ing with squares and used to refuse to do rounds but when I started up again after a few year hiatus after becoming a Mom, I noticed I preferred rounds. I am super OCD so sometimes squares are difficult for me. But in the end, I think the squares do tend to give a more "solid" image when it comes to tiny details. ❤❤

I just finished my 7th DP. I prefer rounds because they are easier for me. I'm much slower at square drills. I thought the one on the left was square.

I know I'm late to this video, but did you see the two C's in the paw of the round painting and fill them in? You were missing two there

For me, the more sophisticated (best word I could think of), I would use squares. Whimsical type artwork, I would use round.

Round look better, but I love square

For some reason the round drill camvas looks like it is zoomed in more than the square. Maybe because the size is slightly bigger for the rounds.

I'll say this. In this case, the round drill kit looks more Textured and pixelated, not in a bad way. The squares look more blended kinda like water color, I guess
