I think the messy lore adds up to Gorillaz charm, it feels like following real people, they can exaggerate, make up, misremember or even forget things, they have multiple accounts of some events and we can never be completely sure, unlike a series who needs to make sense for the fictional story to work here it feels right. Even if it isn't completely intended it mimicks the real deal unlike following something like Josie and the Pussycats. From the artstyle, to the music, to their story, Gorillaz appeal is having that chaotic energy.

This seems to be the only gorillaz iceberg that explains everything well and I really enjoy that

Gorillaz was about anti-consumerism to begin with, yes, but in order to keep themselves in existence they need to do a ton of brand deals since they’re completely independent now. Turns out having all those collaborators, needing all the music videos to be animated, and securing massive venues for giant live shows is really hard to fund on the music alone. It’s a necessary evil to keep the band as it is. Don’t dunk on them so hard for having merch next time, please

I like this vid and I got to learn things I didn't know before, but some of the uploader's interjections like 16:46 confuse me a bit. Gorillaz literally always sold products and made brand deals in order to fund music videos and other stuff. Record labels aren't just going to give them money out of the goodness of their hearts (sadly) and Gorillaz is an expensive project to maintain unlike a conventional band that can subside on just vinyls and streaming. Also the Book of M.A.N/Plastic Bullets stuff we know about seems more like a general outline than a be-all end-all summary. For all we know, giant Russel could have closed the hole himself to prevent the end of the world and the band if this plotline went anywhere, leading to the Book Of series (Jamie basically said as much in that fanzine interview). No one would be able to interview Murdoc in-universe if he was the only one left alive, after all.

Tbh ,i don't mind the new lore ,but i can admit that i fell out of listening to gorillaz in the craker island phase(maybe bc they kept releasing tiktoks and the nft thing ,shitty move,thank god the nft market crashed)i came back and i can say that i enjoy the new lore ,the cult is a really good concept,the villain is weak but eh,love noodle not trusting any of that crap😂 ,and it's right on budget and didn't face alot of copyright issues that will cause some of it's songs to be deleted,i'm looking forward for what they're cooking next
