This is one of the best gaming videos on RU-vid, not only due to the depth but also the quality. For a nine hour video, this had me interested the whole way through.
Damn, every once in a while, the algorithm dumps pure gold into my recommended. Only 15 minutes in, but I absolutely love your style of storytelling. Looks like I've found a new channel to binge.
Now THIS is a person who understands the fucking assignment. Give me passionately-made videos that offer as much depth as possible. The longer the better.
slackjawed loser doesnt understand that someone who is good at writing would be able to condense their point into a video that is less than 9 hours long
Just watched this whole video. This is what RU-vid was made for. I can see that you made this video for fun, and not money. Well written, well narrated and well edited. Amazing work.
i mean he probably did it for both, and theres nothing wrong with an artist wanting some money for such a massive amount of research and work. channels like these should make money, not some logan paul dogshit.
Speaking of money, Hey remember when, a bunch of people remastered all of half life, and instead of valve suing them, they instead allowed it to be on steam under the name Black Mesa, which was known as a good remaster, can’t have that kind of stuff at Rockstar Games, all it is is…Take Two! Sue Sue Sue! Sorry I thought money could connect to the Sue line.
GTA 4 was my second favorite grand theft auto game, just behind vice city. I loved the way the cars handled and the gritty tone. I really hope they make another realistic GTA game just like it.
Yeah, the cars handled PERFECTLY in GTA IV. I honestly hate when people say it's "contentious" or "stiffy". Absolutely the best driving, I hate what they done with GTA V in that aspect.
@@Mush7me too. I think the response from most fans after Gta 4’s realistic driving that in gta 5 they took it to the opposite too literally. There must be a sweet spot that it looks realistic and feels easy to control that they should implement in gta 6
The amount of time and effort that goes in to a project like this cannot be understated. Serious kudos for being able to put something like this out and having it maintain a monumentally high level of quality all the way through. Tried to look through your channel for other socials/contact information, but I couldn't see anything, you should update that whenever you get the chance. Although I imagine you've probably got limited time between editing and sleeping, haha.
@Frigo Pie are you being sarcastic? i genuinely cant tell lol. for me, a retrospective this long is great as its very in depth and provides a lot of content in just one video. i can also just watch it in segments.
@Frigo Pie not to mention it's unnecessarily long because he just keeps reciting the plot line of the whole ass game. This is worse than watching a let's play. At least a lets play is an experience, this is more like reading a couple Wikipedia pages on Ketamine
Nothing crazy about that, they milked 5 Online hard and still are, that's why it's taking so long, why waste millions on a new game when you can just milk 5 Online for everything it's worth. They were planning to make dlc for 5 like they did for 4 but since 5 Online is so successful they canceled it. What's ironic about all that is that in 2014, 5 Online was close to failing but then it really took off for some reason.
@@TheDennys21 Online being a cash cow has nothing to do with gta 6 and I have no idea where people get that from. Gta online will never make as much money as gta 6 will. It's naive and stupid to think that gta onlines success has anything to do with gta 6. When gta 6 comes out you'll see why it took so long. The DLC getting scrapped has nothing to do with gta online they just used some ideas from them and possibly some assets(doubtful but possible) please stop spreading misinformation and blaming gta online for everything.
2:04:30 - In the mission where you steal the tank you can follow them for a while and eventually the convoy stops because the tank driver gets tasked with buying donuts or something silly like that. This gives you an opening to quickly run it and steal it and the rest of the convoy becomes completely defenseless against you in the tank. Great stuff.
Yea i heard about that trick i didnt know it was possible til a friend actually did it and i tried as well it was really funny and goofy at the same time that it was possible
It's crazy how big the story of San Andreas was. I remember like most of us, couldn't BELIEVE how much bigger the map actually was. Once the countryside became available, to look at the map and see there's still San Fiero AND Las Venturas left to explore? Mind blowing to many of us at that age.
The original GTA had the physical maps inside the game case. It really added to the immersion as a child, to be able the hold the maps in your hands and see them as closely or as far as you liked at any time, was awesome!
The 90's LA area was also more smoggy than it is today, like really bad. It was probably added to help loading and RAM management honestly, but the LA area back then was simply more orange tinted than it is today, so it fits the timeline of the game.
Fellating R* hard with that take lol. Even if LA was foggy in the 90s and you couldn't see at times because of the massive amounts of orange fog, that would not be necessary to include anyways as San Andreas isn't even a real place. It's a fictional amalgamation of several American cities such as Las Vegas, San Francisco, and ofc Los Angeles. Also, that issue mainly is with the PS2 version of the game, and to prove my point further it is possible to replicate with mods but only those with nostalgia for the PS2 copy play with that mod.
i just finished it. The fact that you were able to make a 9 hour video, mantaining a high level of quality and entertainment throughout is honestly inspiring. Amazing video, congrats man
1:10:41 - fun fact: the Tanner character is actually a dig by Rockstar towards the Driver franchise, as they gave him a female walking animation. Asuka also mentions he's "useless without his car". Sometime later the new Driver game had a character who was named Tommy Vermicelli who I think couldn't swim.
Yeah I played the driver games cuz my parents wouldn't get gta. Obviously the inferior game lmao. Though, tanner is the main character throughout the whole series. Tanner could swim in driver 3 if I remember correctly. I kinda miss those games for the nostalgia, but in hindsight they suck ass
@@thatboy799 i guess if you play driver expecting it to be like gta then you'll be disappointed, the thing with driver was that it's whole focus was on the driving. it's honestly kind of weird to compare the two series since they basically have nothing in common besides letting you drive around in realistic settings. driver's vehicle handling beats gta any day for me though, the sounds of the tire screeches are so satisfying
@@quackmasterson5128 As a kid who wasn't allowed to play GTA I would compare them. Now that I have played both series' I enjoy both fir their own reasons. GTA is great for playing gangster. Driver is great for playing getaway driver. Driver San Fransisco is utterly underrated, I hate that Ubisoft has completely delisted it from online stores. Though it certainly isn't the same as the first couple games. My favourite GTA is definitely 4 for it's physics and the DLC. The driving, shooting, and overall realism is superior to 5 imo, but I can see why they made it less realistic in that game.
@@thatboy799 >"Obviously the inferior game lmao." You probably still see these games from a perspective of a salty kid who was denied playing GTA. But as driving games, especially for their time, Driver was pretty damn cool. Driver 1 was easily the most advanced driving game of its time and it was a joy to play. But I agree that when these games started mimicking GTA with Driver 3, the series went downhill. But then Driver San Francisco came out and, well let's say that it's still on of my favorite driving games ever released. I play it to this day. (And yeah, as SuperStriker mentioned, it's a shame how Ubisoft treats it.)
The fact I can put this on to listen to falling asleep and wake up the next morning and it still be in is incredible. I respect this a lot must have been a lot of work
All amazing expansions, each in their own way (although IDK London 1969 / Advance personally): Chinatown Wars used the touch-screen amazingly, and did an excellent "handheld game." VCS and LCS, revived old stories by adding to them, and nailed the "console experience on handheld." TLAD did the biker story so well, and took great advantage of LC. TBOGT had so much excitement- it's like the "more realistic" GTA V Online.
Now THIS is how you do a full series retrospective. Hats off to you my guy, this took me about 2 weeks to fully get through, but it was so worth it. Amazing job.
Insane video. Can’t express how much I love looking into video games’ history, and can’t wait for gta 6. I hope that gta 7, in a few decades, is set in a completely new and unexpected cities though.
I love that the editing stays consistantly good during the entire video! I can't even imagine how much time it took to record all of these games and edit it all down like that. And the raw footage must've been huge too!
9+ hours. This is probably the best retrospective I've seen thus far. I don't even want to know how much time went into editing, scripting and getting all the footage done. Great job!
Just wanted to say i really appreciated this video, got me through a 10 hour shift at work. You made some very thoughtful points about all of these games and a lot of us grew up sinking hundreds of hours between the 3d era and HD era of games. It was cool learning about the first 2 games and where grand theft auto achieved it’s footing and watching this video has motivated me to download and play GTA 3 again. Couldn’t imagine the amount of time it took to make this but it is much appreciated!
GTA 3 actually had a lowrider car, the Yardie Lobo. The game never told you that you can bounce it and control the suspension but yeah, you could actually do it
I’ve been watching this in parts over the past couple days, I’m halfway through the GTA V part, and I just want to say You put so, so, so much genuine effort into this retrospective, it’s very great and highly rewatchable! You’re awesome! 💛
I completed this video in span of a week. I slept through some of it, reversed and watched those parts again. It is eeriely similar to when I completed breaking bad, parks and rec, and other long tv shows. I am currently laying on my bed, watching at the time bar that says 9:19:25/9:19:25 and feel nothing but emptiness. It is a very weird feeling to just ask yourself, now what? Something about your work was truly mesmerising and fantastic. So much so, that I started playing gta 4 again ahah. I very much appreciate this kind of hard work and we all were able to enjoy it for free. Thank you so much.
I am blown away by the hard work and attention to detail in this video! Your narration and writing was surprisingly professional while also being entertaining. I rarely comment on videos but you deserve the praise for the work you put in. I’m sure if you keep up this kind of effort into your content then you’ll build the level of audience you deserve! Really great job on this man!
Great work! What hit the hardest for me was when you demonstrated the ambiance of gta 3. When you showed the npc’s random dialogue and the sounds of the city, it brought back so many memories from my childhood man; as im sure it did for a lot of other people. Theres just something so unique about these early gta titles that many openworlds fail to replicate even to this day
It’s a truly groundbreaking game. They could’ve just done simple open world, and even though people say it doesn’t hold up today, they got so many little things right in the first try, including that dialogue and NPC variety. You can also complete missions in so many different ways, seeing his gameplay and how it differs from my current play through is awesome. Back when rockstar wasn’t averse to players going off the beaten linear path to pass the game.
@@monkehp very solid points. I will say though, that the increased linearity has allowed them to create more complicated scripting which allows for more cinematic moments. However, this is a trade off, and I do share your sentiment in that I also miss the nonlinearity at times as well.
I loved the boneyard/desert airport so so much. It always felt so cozy and cool. I'd spend hours there, just flying around in my P51 ans flying. My favorite area of any game
Thank you for putting these games in their proper perspective. GTA3 is still my favorite game ever, because of the huge leap they took. It was a truly insane jump.
Top quality video. 😌Played it on my phone, i fell asleep right after it started, slept for like 14 hours, phone was dead when i woke up. Shall watch again. I love when the narrator has a smooth and even pace. No sudden uneven jumpscares or loud noises.
Gta 4 will forever be my favourite, the story was fantastic, the world was amazing, the police were the best they've ever been and while the driving was polarising their is no other game in the franchise that matched the level of fun as getting a police hummer and going on a rampage
I love the ragdoll in this game, you can squeeze your trigger while ragdolling and shoot yourself ^^ You can also see sometimes weapons firing themselves on impact when they get dropped, it was sometimes very fun, especially with the RPG. I loved all those little realistic details in the 4, if GTA V didn't fleshed this out I said it is the best game ever but...
Yeah, the cars handled PERFECTLY in GTA IV. I honestly hate when people say it's "contentious" or "stiffy". Absolutely the best driving, I hate what they done with GTA V in that aspect.
Literally bro going back and playing GTA 4 made me realize how trash Gta 5 is. And sure as Sht some of the people who worked on 4 didn’t work on 5 and it shows. 5 his terrible
Wow a 9 hour video from someone who has not a lot of subscribers shows how passionate (or how much free time you have lol) you are about the subject. Also is great to see the original two games getting some love and recognition, they always get skipped for no reason in these kind of restrospectives, they were great for the time and they are still pretty fun.
I think, Trevor coming back isn't really about the heist, he realizes that Michael is his only friend. Like genuine friend, everyone else is just scared of him. So he comes back under the guise of the heist.
trevor literally comes back because of the heist "da big one" was the dream they had trevor had no problem leaving michael to die in the slaughterhouse
@@ryszakowy Trevor was just mad alright you would be pissed if someone you trust sold you out to be killed by the FIB and Michael wanted his friend killed I mean would you sell your friend out or stick by his side to the end.
@@corenasue I would absolutely leave 99.9% of people to shoulder the blame for anything. I've been screwed over by people I was foolish enough to trust too many times.
This deserves so many more views, likes and positive, encouraging comments. This video would have taken some serious time and commitment. If you fancy doing this for the entire Metal Gear series, I’ll be waiting here in two years when you release it 😁
I hate that you missed this but, the precise reason why rider was killed off is that his voice actor left the project halfway through. Supposedly because of Rockstar's disrespect towards their voice actors and lack of pay. There is no dialogue in that mission between CJ and Rider, because they didn't have enough voice lines to assign to the character.
he didn't leave, this is was debunked by MC Eiht (Ryder's VA) himself. Rockstar told him that they had all the voicelines they needed, the direct quote from him was "that's all they wanted me to do". this misinformation has gone on long enough lmao
your Metal Gear retrospective got my interest, but this video made me subscribe. particularly enjoyed your analysis of San Andreas and GTA 5, because a lot of people miss the actual point of San Andreas and a lot of people needlessly shit on 5. it's rare to see someone else with as much unbridled reverence for Rockstar as myself. I wish you had a better time with GTAO, but it is what it is. thanks for the video, can't wait for the rest of the Metal Gear franchise
I am biased because of nostalgia, but Chinatown Wars is underrated and deserves a play through just for how different it tries to be, in a good way. It has the GTA charm while managing to be an almost completely different experience
I Always came off with the feeling that Stretch had originally been a more important character with more gang/hood missions for franklin but at some point during production it all got scraped out and downgraded
I'm still only part-way through this video. Only Starting GTA IV but I gotta say, this is seriously one of my all-time favourite videos I've ever seen on RU-vid. You do a fantastic job going through mechanics and following it up with story beats and mission design. You good sir, absolutely deserve far far more subscribers. You're a damn inspiration.
Been a fan since gta 3 when I could barely read (my parents were very loose with what I played but theyre great for that lmao) and this was a great analysis of all the games! A lot of work was put into this video and I’m glad it’s getting the proper attention it deserves, cheers homie!
GTA4 was so amazing. I loved being in the world and it immersed me unlike any game I’d ever played. What I remember most however, is my agony trying to beat the game due to the lack of a save system in missions. I remember the controller throwing when I was 20 minutes into a mission, died, and had to go allllll the way back
The reason Zero’s “Supply Lines” mission is remembered as one of the hardest in GTA SA is because the original disk that was shipped had a bug. In the original version your fuel would even if you weren’t accelerating, making the mission that much harder
There’s actually a canon explanation for the different versions of the cities- there’s a 2D universe (gta 1 and 2), 3D universe (gta3 all the way to Vice city stories), and HD universe (gta 4 and beyond). All three are different timelines.
4:51:06 - The Terraria Underground Theme had taken me by surprise an hour or so earlier, but man... when the Another Medium OST from Undertale started I got goosebumps. Loved the music choices all throughout, well done!
I just had to comment to say how amazing this truly was, I often struggle with watching long RU-vid videos as I get easily distracted but this kept me hooked. You can clearly see the massive amount of time and effort that was put in to this and I’m so so glad that I watched it, such a highly researched and informative video and really well made. As a big fan of the GTA series for a long time I can’t compliment this enough, huge thanks and well done to Munt Chunk for this, amazing work!!!
extremely underrated channel and literally deserves at least 100x more subscribers considering the amount of work going into the videos. keep up the good work.
5:30:55 the foreshadowing for michelle was actually done really well in 1 key moment at the beginning of the game. On the first date Niko comments on how everything in her house has the tags still on them. While michelle plays this off as her just being “clean” this small detail is actually brilliant. Since she is a government agent they set up her apartment so she could complete her job. Thats why all the stuff has tags because it was literally just created by the government to remove suspicion from people who entered. Like imagine saying you lived in the city for years but yet you have no furniture lol. Anyways thats just a detail you didn’t add in that i thought was pretty clever
literally just noticed this the other day. i can't believe after all this time i've never noticed that. 😂 it's such a cool detail that not many will realize even AFTER the reveal. Rockstar is really amazing when it comes to storytelling
I remember buying GTA 3 the day it came out (was a big fan of the isometric GTA 1 and 2). Firing it up was one of those rare, singular experiences that you know is going to change everything that comes after. Kinda like Dorothy going from black and white to technicolor in The Wizard of Oz.
I was really excited for GTA 3 and would talk it up at school. My friend, having briefly played GTA1 didn’t get my excitement. Well we went to my house the day GTA3 came out. He drove me to pick it up. I put it on and started playing and he was like 👀
Been chipping through this bit by bit. It feels like an entire documentary series!! INSANE quality and consistency over the whole 9 hours. Amazing work.
I remember playing the first GTA! Would of never imagine 10+ years later just how different and brilliant it would turn out to be. One day I hope we will get to have a GTA Europe, it would be off the scale
@@maxim196there's a lot to mock about European western cultures. I think a great place to start would be some ex Soviet Slavic countries in the modern day, so we can see what Nico ran from that made the bullshit in America less of a hassle.
How did you make A 9 HOUR VIDEO SO ENJOYABLE???, I still have 4 hours left but the fact I have watched a video for this long and found it enjoyable all of the way through is unreal…good shit my man you deserve way more views and subs man❤
I don’t comment often on RU-vid but I had to. This video is fantastic! While it’s taken me about a week to get through, it’s the level of deep dive I love! I’m glad you didn’t sacrifice quality for a shorter video
As a kid I remember skipping through all the cutscenes to the action. As I got older I definitely learned to appreciate the story and lore for its depth and creativity. Shoutout to the teams behind these games bro.
3:27:50 The weird anticlimactic death of Ryder, was actually due to a fallout between R* and the voice actor (rapper) MC Eiht, before finishing up his dialog. So they had to make up a new way for him to die while using whatever lines they had already got. They have since made up, and MC Eiht has been in both GTA V as himself as a radio guest. The more you know, right?
@@tibersulla2305 I've known it for a long time. My best guess would be just after original release. Surely people must have been confused about Ryder's weird and anticlimactic ending, even back then.
@@dannifugl3188 Even as a kid I sure noticed the anticlimactic end to my favorite character, but I never heard since then anything about a falling out between the actor and R*, although that's not surprising, not the first or second time this happened with R*.

1:17:00 the reason why you couldnt find a Yardie is because it's a gang car that only spawns in a specific location. You were searching it on the wrong area.
You we're obviously running GTA3 at 60FPS. Probably for nice footage. The physics are designed for 30FPS and if you run it at 60, you can get flung over the street and die just by stepping from the sidewalk onto the street. :) Edit: It also influences driving physics. ;) Nonetheless: Amazing work!
GTA3 came with a physical Map of the city when it was first released. It was a poster had everything important labeled and that was how the one endgame mission Expresso was achieved back in the day. In fact, I remember a ton of missions being way easier because I had the poster. lol
All games came with a poster and map on the reverse even the original and it showed where everything was including pay n sprays if i remember rightly..
I remember having the maps of vice city and San Andreas and flipping the map the the other side where the poster girl was showing, that what my room looked like as an 8 year old
To comment on GTA V's wanted system: -6th star got cut, for who knows what reason, but with it it most likely took the military, it's referenced in police scanner audio files. -GTA Vs cops were supposed to use batons and tasers, this was also removed, yet you can still find batons in their loadouts in files. (Apparantly they added an un-disableable combat flag which forces the cops to use their best weapon I.E. Gun) -GTA Vs cops were also supposed to arrest NPCs, also cut for who knows what reason, animations and audio are also still in the games files. -The wanted radius got cut, it's also still in the files and editable, yet wont appear unless enabled via .asi or script. Yeah, some interesting removed stuff. Edit: Also about fighting, R is to punch and Q to kick, it's explained in the mission where you drive into Simeons dealership. So yes, you can kick and punch seperately, but if you spam left click you'll do random attacks.
I always assume 6 stars was cut because of the fact it's the 5th game in this series and because in IV, 5 and 6 starts don't feel all too different from each other
This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!
