Hello Planeswalkers,
my name is Eisenherz. I'm a dedicated cEDH player, one of the admins on the Urza Discord Server and curator of two well known cEDH Urza Primers. I spent the last week filming and editing this almost 2h monologue about cEDH Urza and hope it will help new and experienced pilots alike to understand the deck, its goals and somewhat complex lines better in order to bring their gameplay and lists to the next level.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask in the comments, on our Discord Server or the Moxfield page and if you enjoyed this rundown, please leave a like on the video and the primer, comment your feedback, share the video with your friends and subscribe to the channel for more quality content in the future.

This guide has been amazing. I thought I had a decent grasp on how the combos worked...but it was super useful that you actually went through them sequence by sequence. You did a fantastic job of clearing them up and making them very easy to follow and understand. I'm having a blast with a VERY non-cEDH Urza deck that is just a ton of fun to run. It's slow and clunky and I freaking love it lol. It's full of big stupid spells, has several ways to go infinite on mana and then just has tons of ways of finishing out games. It's a hell of a fun deck to run...but it's not at all fun to play against lol. Memnarch is a favorite in the deck, but I'm also running stupid things like a Mindslaver lock and can do things like deal infinite damage (or gain infinite life) with Ugin the Spirit Dragon or I can infinitely gain control of all my opponent's turns and then slowly blow up their boards with annihilator with Kozilek and Ulamog if my opponents have things with indestructible or hexproof. I was running Memnarch as my commander for a long time and really liked the deck...but I just recently picked up Urza and Hullbreaker Horror and gave Urza a try at the helm and holy heck...Urza is stupid! lol...he instantly gave my deck a massive boost on speed and consistency that Memmy was missing. My friends refuse to play me in 1vs1 and they insta-scoop as soon as they see I have infinite mana. They never let me have any fun! :p haha Sorry for the long ramble. I'm just hyper atm! :D

Hey Jacob, thanks for coming by and for your feedback. Unfortunately, I won't be making a whole UPS video, that's just too much for a deck this similar. You will see, however, that I made a short epilogue about the UPS version (1:43:20). The decks really don't differ that much, except for the fact UPS doesn't have "1-card-combos" (Poly / Staff). To combat that we try to play the best utility creatures Mono-Blue has to offer.

@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 2 года назад
The combo is pretty dope. We used to be on Future Sight + Sculptor + Top. but Future Sight is just too bad of a card. Unfortunately tho,it's still a 3 card combo and Sculptor doesn't really pull so much weight outside of the combo. I'm currently testing only Top + Chip for my UPS build, but Chip hasn't performed too well, because of it's nombo with Grafdigger's Cage and the fact that there is Rule of Law in almost every pod....soooo imo the draw-engine of Chip + Top is playable on its own, but only time and more testing will tell if it makes the cut.

Thanks so much for the video the deck looks great! I was wondering to make this deck a bit more cost effective for me who wants to only play semi-competitively how would you best replace the following cards from the kraken deck: Timetwister, Transmute Artifact, Intuition, Power Artifact, Rhystic Study, and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale? Thanks so much!

I have a several budget list linked in the primer. But here we go: - Twister -> Midnight Clock - Transmute -> Reshape - Grim Monolith -> Basalt Monolith - Power Artifact -> Rings of Brightheart - Intuition -> some cantrip or draw spell like Impulse or Sleight of Hand - Tabernacle -> Island or cantrip (see above) - Try to grab a Rhystic Study. It's a staple and the deck really needs all the draw engines it can get.

Hello and thank you for this monster of a guide. How do you feel about Moonsnare Prototype from NEO? It has amazing synergy with Static Orb-like stax (for a backup in case of no Urza) and in the late game deals with any nonland permanent as an uncounterable effect.
@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 2 года назад
We discussed it a bit on the server and I believe some people tested it, but overall the effect doesn't feel good enough to use up a slot for. Having a backup Urza effect is only okish and the bounce effect is kinda expensive. Compare that to Otawara. 🤯

i like tidespout cause it will bounce lands. i can lock the game out theoretically. i put both hullbreaker and tidespout in my shoriki build
@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 2 года назад
I get that appeal of bouncing lands, but speaking from experience, once you go infinite there is no need to bounce lands. You have access to all of your deck, can make them hellbent and can counter any spell your opponents cast. Hullbreaker in particular bounces spells from the stack. Boucing land is just overkill at that pount. It is much better to reliably 100% of the time flip into Hullbreaker than only 50% of the time. It's also less likely you will draw into a looper. This has been tested thoroughly by different Urza Players and is basically consensus now.
@intothefantasy
@intothefantasy 2 года назад
just a question, how to brew urza with a meta of heavy creature hitters? having alot of bounce spells? any recommendation vs those kind of meta? is it possible if you can share your 90 cards brew section in mox field out with the consideration card section as well? so is easier to brew our self and know which 90 cards is mostly staple
@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 2 года назад
Hey John, the Core list is linked in the Primer. You will find it at the bottom of the SCD. If you see a lot of bigger creatures, adding more hard removal (Resculpt, Pongify, Rapid Hybridization, maybe even Reality Shift) as well as soft removal (Chain of Vapor, Cyclonic Rift, Snap, Geistform, Alchemists Retrieval, Winds of Rebuke) can be an option. If there are like really big creature, maybe, just maybe Ensaring Bridge could be an option. It's not a staple by any means, but it could come in handy in your meta.
@intothefantasy

I have pretty much every piece for this list with the exception of a time twister, which realistically I will never be able to afford at this point. I’m only 15 min into the guide so far so I apologize if this is addressed later in the individual card talk but with your mention of running a “winconless” deck to maximize card quality, can this still be achieved without a time twister? I’ve often found myself running at least an oracle or Jace just as hedge even though I know I’m doing it at the cost of other more quality cards for those slots. Any help with this would be super useful as I’ve been discouraged from playing Urza in cEDH due to the lack of a time twister
@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 2 года назад
Hey there, so this is addressed in a later part of the video. You can actually win without a timetwister, but it's just a super strong card to play in general. If you don't own one and can't proxy, I suggest using Midnight Clock or Echo of Eons as an alternative. Both enable twister loops, but they are def worse than twister and not really necessary. I strongly suggest NOT playing Jace or Thoracle. Both are just really bad cards outside of being wincons and Thoracle isn't even an option in Poly builds, because it's a creature and you can't play other creatures in a Poly deck. Maybe try "Bribery". If you play against another Thoracle player a lot, this can be a hard wincon. Cast it from exile, grab an opponenets Thoracle and win.

Let's assume Horror is in play. 1. Make infinite mana by looping 2 rocks. 2. Cast Narset and bounce a Rock like Lotus Petal (or any other permanent, because you have inf mana anyway). 3. What do you think about using a prologue to phyresis +isochron? I think it is a new faster wincon
@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 9 месяцев назад
It would take 10 activations / 10 turns to win the game. How is that faster? If you mean inside of dual scepter loops or twister loops, I don't see a reason to add PTP to the deck, because it does very little outside of drawing a card for 2 mana. We've recently swapper Narsets Reversal for Codex Shredder, which has been a great swap. It hates on topdeck tutors, allows for milling lines and twister loops.

What are you talking about when you say filter colorless through urza for blue? Just the freecasting?
@EisenherzMTG
@EisenherzMTG 2 года назад
No, sometimes you actually need to cast spells from your hand and for that you need don't just need infinite colorless mana, but also blue mana, so you can use Urza ability to filter infinite colorless mana into infinite blue mana. Example 1 0. Have Grim Monolith + Power Artifact in play and make Infinite colorless mana 1. Tap Grim Monolith for 1 Blue mana with Urzas ability 2. Use 4 of your infinite colorless mana to untap Grim Monolith 3. Repeat 1 + 2 for infinite blue mana. Example 2 0. Have Isochron Scepter (with Dramatic Reversal) + Mana Vault in play and make infinite colorless mana 1. Tap Mana Vault for 1 Blue mana with Urzas ability 2. Use your infinite colorless mana to activate Isochron Scepter and untap Mana Vault 3. Repeat 1 + 2 for infinite blue mana. Hope that helps

For the Polymorph list? There are different options here. You can obviously just cast Orb afzer casting Urza. You can also just use Urza as the Polymorph target, but you'd beed a way to recast it / make infinite mana without the need of Urza (which is pretty easy and reliable) or you don't play Torpor Orb in your list. I personally lately shifted to less Stax for the UPS version to make it more of a Tempo list rather than a Control list and no Stax for the Polymorph version to make it a straight forward Combo list.
