Despite Apple’s tepid commitment to FCP, it’s great you and the community still provide such useful information that make FCP still a great NLE, so thank you!
Oh man! I so needed this video. Scruffy doesn't go half way to describing me. Now I know I have to wash behind my ears lol. I'm about to get better thanks Dylan.
Wow! What a great video! Editing is a time suck for me mainly because of organization and adding in titles/ SFX. But your video opened up my eyes to streamlining it. I specifically loved the FCP templates 🔥 any chance you have a deep dive on this? I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t need this 😅
Yes indeed, I cannot move over to Davinci for the same reason, it is just so easy to rip through my videos hit I/O hit F and move on and then make my timelines from just those selects/Favorite moments. I have been asking Davinci for years to do this but so far nothing!!
wish I could press like buttons a thousand times!! I especially liked the way you organized effects, music, etc. Compound clips are still a confusion to me, I will watch other videos of yours now...!!! Thanks, I can't imagine how much work you put into this video!! Appreciate!
Woof. I’ve known it for a while, but this is really the next frontier for me to level up my editing. Great work. I’m going to start implementing a lot of this!
Fantastic video! That's exactly what I needed to finally getting organized! I have a doubt though, probably obvious for not beginners... After you import each media to the correspondent events you're gonna create only one project inside one of the events? 🤔
Thanks so much! 😊 yes that’s correct. Although if it’s a big project with a lot of footage, you could make ‘stringouts’ which are basically projects with the best footage of different days/etc and then add that to the main project. Up to you. I usually do 1 project though
OMG thank you sooooo much for this vid! I’m still fairly new to film editing and fcp and have been looking for a vid like this to help suggest org tips for my content. Love love love! Will definitely implement some of these. Thank you!
It's my pleasure 😊 glad I could help. Have you seen these two videos of mine? They're packed with a lot of tips that should help set you down the right path: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YeHmrKWh3wg.htmlsi=42O-J_VY-eEntQjW ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QyKPzFD3xF0.htmlsi=ZGeYOqcpEiHtgpY8
Yes indeed, Favorites are Key. I cannot move over to Davinci for the same reason, it is just so easy to rip through my videos hit I/O hit F and move on and then make my timelines from just those selects/Favorite moments. I have been asking Davinci for years to do this but so far nothing!! Everyone on the Davinci forums seems to blow it off and say it is not much different but it is totally different in Davinci and too many extra steps to do something so simple. Not to mention my 100's of plugins that I use daily and do not want to have to purchase the Davinci versions or there isn't any similar.
Yup man. That’s exactly why FCP is the efficiency king. Resolve has more bells and whistles but too many things can get in your way and take you out of the creative flow.
Keywords - You can also drag a range selection (or even multiple selections) from the the browser to the keyword in the list without having to Command+K and add them manually.
@@dylanjohndickerson I kind of discovered it by accident while keywording a project. One of those, "I wonder if I can do this?" moments. And it worked. Being able to use drag multiple persistent range selections onto a keyword at once can save a ton of time, for sure.
Wow! Super helpful. Thanks! Do you know if there’s a way to have the filters work at the library level rather than the project level because it seems they only work on an open project. Basically, if your library has 100 clips in it and 99 are in one project and one is in another project, if you activate the used filter on the project containing the single clip, the filter will show that one clip is used. Is there a way to get it to show that all 100 clips are used since they are, just in multiple projects? Specifically, I sometimes have a library with multiple projects. One project might be a vertical Short and the other a more traditional video, and I’d like to see which clips are used and unused in both projects, Thanks!
Hi, great tips, one question: when youu import your footage, images etc. do you tick "leave them at place" or do you copy them. over to the library? thanks
Organization is paramount. QUESTION. On your first bit. After that folder structure is setup, and you created the Example Library, then opened it up and inside created the Events that correlate with the folder structure you initially created, it seems you would still have to drag the media into the FCP events from the folder structure it sits in. So duplicate, rename and move media into appropriate folders of the template folder structure, then open the library within the FCP folder. Then drag and drop the media from the folder structure into Events in the FCP browser window? Thanks
I don't quite understand your question, sorry. So I don't drag anything into the template folder structure. Only when I duplicate the folder structure for a project do I start dragging stuff into it. Then I just open up that FCP library in there, and import all the media into their designated folders.
@@dylanjohndickerson thank you for the reply. I have implemented this organizational approach. For me some of the folders are named differently and I do have media in certain template folders prior to duplication. This media will be used in all of my future projects, so this saves me of adding them each time I begin a new project with a new library.
Thanks Dylan! great tips but one thing that makes me confused for so many years is where to keep media. Some years ago I decided that the easiest way for me to keep all media within the fcp library. Isn't this an easier way than keeping the media within the folders in the hard drives?
Thanks for watching man! No because what if you need to access a specific dialogue or clip for another project? The folder structure I went over is the easiest option.
@@dylanjohndickerson Hmm 🤔 As all of the footage is organized as events instead of folders in the hard drives, i could easily find and copy specific footage or media between fcp libraries, that’s never been an issue for me. Also i never keep original footage except the fcp created footage after import. Am I really doing it wrong? 😑
@@babeyeahsweetie Ahh that's an overlay pack I created myself ☺ I'm super proud of it. You'd be supporting my channel by picking it up, but no pressure! Here's the link: www.dylanjohndickerson.com/filmic-burn-pack
