Just got my custom Serus J after waiting 11 months…I went all out. Lollar gold foil pickups, flamed maple neck and fretboard with black block inlays, stainless frets, vandalism yellow over black, medium distress, matching headstock. It’s freakin’ perfect.

I had a relatively inexpensive road worn Jazzmaster that I installed a Mastery on and I've owned 3 Novo Serus Js. I've had several Strats as well as a few Bigsby equipped guitars over the years and the Mastery is by far the best vibrato I've ever played. Can't go wrong with a Mastery

Dude I have had my novo since March and after putting in a set of bareknuckle supermassive p90s it has become my number 1. I love it for so much and while it was like a 15 month wait it was worth every minute. I have been gigging it a ton.

Have a Serus J in Ice blue metallic. I got it back when the wait was supposed to be 9 months, but I got it in 7! It was on of the last non distressed ones they were offering, and I had binding and block inlays added. This was 3+ years ago and it now has some natural light wear. I went back and forth between Fralin P90s or noiseless ones. In the end, I opted for Lollar Mini HBs and I'm really happy with tone I get out of it. You're right about the Mastery, it is fantastic on a Serus J. That and my Duesenberg Starplayer TV are the two best tremolos that I have ever used. Both are so smooth with great tuning stability.

NICE dude - what a beautiful guitar! One day I'd like to get one of these. If you had to choose between this guitar and a Jennings Nav what would it be?
@ZachBrobstMusic
@ZachBrobstMusic 9 месяцев назад
I think I'd lean towards a Jennings for a few reasons. Personally I know Chad and really love his attention to detail and I know I could order a custom guitar for around $3500 from him and get all the specs I want. Whereas with the Novo the $3500 price point is their entry model. Plus I mention in this video how I just really like that "new" look/feel of a guitar and the Novo's don't have that whereas the Jennings do. I want to commission Chad to build me the exact look/model of what he's been posting on Instagram recently!

Fantastic review man! I like how you said you’ll notice the noise when you’re not playing your guitar 😆 I’ve wanted a Novo for a long time too but I live in Austria and it’s hard to pay extra for customs. I used to live in Nashville so it’s kind of ironic. I agree about the $1000 difference in playability not being worth it. You don’t really notice much I bet. The finish and brand is what you’re paying extra for. No other guitar looks like that and it’s understandable that they can charge that much more.

Nice review and that's a beautiful guitar. I have one on order with Novo now and i'm pretty psyched for it to arrive. I haven't played a Lindy Fralin pickup I didn't love, but I get that folks have different preferences. The Big Single Mini is hands down the best pickup i've ever installed into the neck position of a Telecaster. True P90s in general are inherently noisy, as a single coil pickup, but they do a thing that humbuckers, mini hums, and strat or Tele style single coils just don't do. I'm not a fan of stacked P90s or other hum cancelling options. They just don't do the thing for me. There are so many great pickup builders out there now that you can definitely find something a little or a lot different that can drop right into that guard.

Yup! I have a pair of Ristrettos coming in but I likely won't change them. I think they fit the voice of the guitar and just are meant to be paired with my Novo. Overall they sound amazing - just have to adjust to them!

@@ZachBrobstMusic I got a Serus J about a year ago, and after trying a few months to gel with the Fralin P90's I decided to swap them out for a set of Ristrettos. I will say that while I love the Ristretto bridge, I am not in love with the Ristretto neck, and I may actually pull it out at some point for something else. I can't seem to get a good balance between the neck and bridge position, EQ wise. I think the Ristretto neck pickup in combination with the pine body, it just doesn't have the upper-mid "presence" that I desire and is a bit heavy in the lows/low-mid response. It may also be I just don't like a P90 in the neck position. I'll be interested to see your thoughts if you end up putting the ristrettos in.
@ZachBrobstMusic
@ZachBrobstMusic 8 месяцев назад
@@colossians1_15-20 I'm excited to compare them too. I know neck P90s can be pretty dark at times so hopefully it brings enough life to the guitar. Honestly, though, I'm bonding with the Fralin P90s more the more I use them
@colossians1_15-20
@colossians1_15-20 8 месяцев назад
@@ZachBrobstMusic You know, I do recall the stock Fralin P90 neck sounding pretty dang good. When I went to take it out, I noticed it was labeled as a "5% underwind". Truth be told I may throw that thing back in there. It was really the Fralin bridge I didn't care so much for.

10:05 I've had 3 Serus Js and they do seem quieter than your average p90 guitar, but pull the pickguard and the control cavity plate off sometime. I saw no shielding paint, no foil of any kind in either the pickup or control cavities, and no foil on the back of the pickguard or control plate. A lot of guitars have pickups with vintage braided shield leads but they cheap out on the wire from the toggle switch to the pots/jack, for example. I think Novo uses shielded wire throughout. That in conjunction with trimming off all unnecessary wire and having only 1 volume and 1 tone may help also. My Serus J is MUCH quieter than my Les Paul Special, for example.

Nice review. I would like to have a Novo, but I own a Shelton Galaxyflite and a Jennings Voyager DeLuxe, and I am in love with both, and I don't know if it is worth buying a Novo too. What do you think, since you say you've had a Jennings? Thank you.
@ZachBrobstMusic
@ZachBrobstMusic 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! I really love my Jennings but I do think the Novo offers a different experience. Chad pays insanely close attention to all the details and my Voyager is spectacular. It's clean, all the details are perfect, so on. The Novo isn't that way at all. It's comfortable, broken in, worn, etc. I find myself reaching for it more than my Jennings recently because it just feels familiar. Both are truly great instruments though and you can't go wrong!

The wood used makes no difference to the sound. A lot of guitars you just pay extra because some woods cost more. Still want to try one of these.

The ringing noise your hear when you strum it is 100% normal, it's the strings behnd the bridge that are vibrating, thats what a jazzmaster does, they call it the built-in reverb, every jazzmaster bridge will do that, that's one of the reasons why people who love jazzmasters love jazzmasters, it's the extra harmonics coming from the strings behind the bridge.

So how's the playability compared to a Seventh Day Guitars model?
@ZachBrobstMusic
@ZachBrobstMusic 9 месяцев назад
Playability wise I think the Novo is significantly better than the Seventh Day Guitars Joyful series I played a while back. I just purchased a Psalm series and will be doing a review of that in the near future, but I assume you're specifically wanting to know about playability between SDGs custom series and the Novos, correct?
@chrisw1460
@chrisw1460 9 месяцев назад
@@ZachBrobstMusic I've known Scott for a while, watched SDG grow and improve, but I wanted to get your thoughts on a direct comparison between the two. Where does the SDG fall short in terms of playability?
@ZachBrobstMusic
@ZachBrobstMusic 9 месяцев назад
Similar experience on my end - love Scott, super cool dude, but when it comes to comparing his work vs. someone like Dennis Fano and the team of luthiers there I don't think it's an even comparison. Specifically, I think Scott is improving a TON and I'm a big fan of the value around the Psalm series but I think he's still ironing out his QC and getting more consistent on the product he delivers and his attention to detail. When it comes to playability, I largely go to the neck where I think its just not as fluid or smooth as it could be. My Psalm series had uneven frets, nut was too low, etc. The Novo is world class. Remarkable playability, perfect frets, comfortable, etc. @@chrisw1460

You can’t get a Jazzmaster style guitar and complain about the unplugged plinky sound behind the bridge… it’s part of the design/sound of the Jazzmaster. It’s like complaining that a tele is too spanky or a Les Paul has too much sustain. Relish & enjoy the overtones brother! 🤘🏽

No offence, but a kemper can make ANY guitar sound incredible. Amp is usually more important than guitar for how good it sounds to be honest. Like its REALLLLLY hard to tell the difference between say a squire and high end ender when played through a kemper

"Priced... to give their brand exclusivity and prestige..." And that is nothing more than a pure "ego tax" and has a real world value of $0.00. And nothing in the guitar world is more douche-y than that. It is a gorgeous guitar, but I am WELL past the stage in my life where I give 2 cents of care if my guitar has "exclusivity and prestige". I will gladly pay $3k for a guitar, but 90% of that price had better be based on material quality and meticulous craftsmanship as an instrument and not whether it will pass the Kool-Kidz-Club litmus test.

No matter how good it feels and sounds, it is still a Pine Wood guitar... and they start out at $3500 (and some cost $5 grand or more).. Some of their models are equipped with the horrible Tele style, 3 barrel bridge that can't be properly intonated. All these reviews just seem like guys trying to justify paying thousands of dollars for a "Status" guitar that will probably never leave their bedroom.
