The Ultimate Guide to One Handed Pickleball Spin Serves in 2022

In this video I break down how to do the Morgan Evans toss for one handed spin serves. This is easily the most misunderstood method for spinning the ball and I wanted to clear up any missconceptions that exist. This video also covers whether or not the serves will be legal for both USAPA and PPA tournaments.

Do you think the USAPA will remove the spin serves mid year?
@kento1957

Unlikely to make a rule change mid year plus this serve is more difficult than spinning with the paddle hand so fewer people will be doing it.

Exc walkthrough of the technical aspects of the one handed spin serves. I was actually not too upset learning that a month is a realistic learning curve to implement this serve, as I had tried it maybe 50 times during my first day of attempts, and was pretty discouraged that I WAS NOWHERE NEAR DOING IT PROPERLY. I am a new subscriber to your channel and really enjoy the content, delivery and format of your videos , so thank you very much and please keep up the great work. I teach pickleball, and will be sharing/recommending your videos to both my clients as well as the people I play with competitively : )

Great video! I get the most consistent kick from the one handed backhand slice option. Even when my opponents know it is coming, if I hit it right, it often still aces them. I personally use my index and ring finger to generate the spin as my hands are not quite large enough to comfortably use the index and middle. I also wonder if the snap method is harder on one’s joints long term.

I have developed multiple spin serves under the 2022 rules. The most important thing to me is that my toss and body position is identical for all serves. I’m not trying to get 20k rpm. I want enough kick to have my opponent miss the sweet spot and have no idea I’m hitting a spin serve or what way it will kick.

great video.....its nuts to have 2 organizations and 2 sets of rules....plus I think the spin serve/toss should be outlawed from both organizations....rules in sports are suppose to protect the integrity of a game-----not confuse and give players an unfair advantage or opportunity to cheat.....

Regarding your explanation of misdirect serves at the end: The reason the ball is curving in one direction during it's flight and then kicks in the opposite direction is because the spin from your hand and the spin from your paddle are affecting the ball's spin around 2 different axes. The spin from your hand is a barrel roll spin (CW or CCW when viewed from behind or in front) and the spin from the paddle is clockwise/counterclockwise when viewed from the top (or from underneath). So both types of spin are independent and can be placed on the ball at the same time.
@godgunsandgoldens
@godgunsandgoldens 2 года назад
What? A ball cannot spin on two different axes. Unless your in the twilight zone.
@justinlauria82
@justinlauria82 2 года назад
@@godgunsandgoldens The resulting spin is the sum of both rotations i.e. a 'diagonal' spin rotating around an axis that has a component in the direction of both axes
@godgunsandgoldens
@godgunsandgoldens 2 года назад
@@justinlauria82 In other words the spin is changed by degrees but is still one spinning rotation.

One other variation that you didn't mention was to spin the ball in the opposite direction by putting your thumb on top. That way you don't have to turn your body or contort your wrist. It takes a bit of practice also to get good RPM.
@PickleballStudio
@PickleballStudio 2 года назад
Interesting! I’ll have to try it. Personally, I can’t imagine the RPMs would be very close to the regular one because there’s no hard snap with that method. But it seems like it’s worth at least messing with. Thanks for the heads up.

Bottom line question. When serving, Can you impart spin whether it’s topspin or a sideswiping motion with the paddle?
@PickleballStudio

As long as you do not touch the paddle to the ball during the toss, yes. That is perfectly legal. Your non paddle hand must toss and release the ball, then you are free to do any spin you want with the paddle.

If the PPA is saying the spin serve is illegal for Pros, it is as stupid as the MLB making the curve ball pitch illegal as the Little League through College Leagues continues to use the curve ball. This PPA rule will make the PPA into a handicap tournament that not worth watching.

The people saying the spin serve is bad for the sport and should be banned are the ones that just don't want to take the time out to learn how to read it. It's not hard and doesn't take long. I say let the people serve the way they wanna serve.

While effective and fun, it seems that the writing is on the wall that eventually it's going to be banned by both groups for all players. In light of that, I'm thinking the hours put into getting it down might be better spent on working on other things. There is one video showing how a guy weaponized the drop serve nicely.

When the PPA comes to Atlanta, I will not be attending the tournament. The USAPA sets rules for the WHOLE pickleball family and if the PPA cannot support the ruling body, and follow the rules, I cannot support the PPA.

Agree Bill. in 2021 they excluded three rules from USAPA. They just make stuff up. Not good for the sport. Maybe the new owner of PPAtour, Tom Dundon, will think more about the sport and less about egos. IMO. :)

I play rec and more than likely won't ever play anything else cause of a physical condition I have. I have people exploit spin serve against me. Me issues with spin serve is a lot of the rec players is see can't play well after they serve. Simple as that. It's also just bad camaraderie. Let's be real if your playing rec at a local YMCA or something like that. Your spin serve really doesn't matter cause obviously your not going pro anytime soon. So why not get a good volley and a good match going.

Tournament directors have the option of not allowing spin serves. So, as these serves continue to grow, the outcry will continue to grow and they'll be gone sooner rather than later. Better to work on a traditional serve and not waste the time.
@davidj7516

If the tournament is USAPA approved, they have to let the spin serve in. The curveball in baseball should never have been allowed also, right? That's basically the same thing.

@@dwainsmith448 Actually the exact same thing. Look up 'Breaking Ball', History, on Wikipedia. But the curve is still here.

@@davidj7516 If you are still arguing this point then either 1) you haven’t thought this through (most likely option) or 2) you don’t understand the age demographics of the pickleball player population. How many 50, 60, and 70 year olds do you know playing baseball vs pickleball? This age demographic in pickleball isn’t happy with the recent influx of ex-tennis players into the pickleball world. They aren’t happy with spinny servers either. This is a VERY vocal group. So the baseball analogy is extremely flawed, worthless in fact, because the age population of players is exactly NOT the same. The resulting impact on the rules will therefore not be the same. You either understand this or you don’t.

The spin serve needs to be eliminated altogether. Not good for the game. The drop serve is fine. The only new rule which never made sense is the let-ball serve that lands "in" for a point. Total nonsense in which there is zero control on either side of the net. Might as well say "if a bird flies into the ball and lands in -- it's a good serve." ( sigh ... )

i think its a technicality, you can't impart spin with your paddle BEFORE you serve.. but nothing about doing it with one hand. In Ping Pong, you MUST release with an open palm and go up like 6" before you can strike the ball, but that is a different animal altogether
