I started fly fishing about 30 years ago. It was pretty much all self taught by watching other fishermen and asking the occasional question. I watch your videos faithfully and learn something new and informative on every one. I just watched this latest one on sinking tips and sinking lines and it has changed everything for me - from techniques to attitudes and understanding. I didn't realize how ignorant I was. The worst part of relying on asking questions of strangers is that often you don't know what questions to ask. You just answered all my questions, even the ones I didn't know to ask. Now I just can't wait for the ice to be off and I can apply my newfound knowledge. Thank you very much - keep. up the good work.

Absolutely brilliant video, helping anglers understand what's happening under the surface and how the fly is actually fishing. When it comes to sink tip and full sinking lines, I absolutely love Airflo. The range they have, that covers everything and every situation. Add that to one of the modern cassette reels, and the fish really are screwed 😂. Keep up the good work guys 👌

Cool I will definitely get a sinking line to add to my kit. I’ve had good luck streamer fishing putting the split shot a good ways up the line, about 4-6 feet above the fly. It seems to do a good job keeping the streamer from rising too much while stripping but it can be a pain when the line gets tangled. Thanks for the tips 👍

Thanks, Brian. I have a sinking fly line, but it's not a very common type of line here in New Zealand. So I didn't know how to fish with this line. I tried to cast across the river, leave it to swing, and then retrieve the streamer up the current. I've never caught a fish, only snagged the bottom of the river. Now, I figured out that I did everything wrong :D

This was really great! I learned a lot. I often wade fish small streams and wander far from the car so carrying multiple rods is a pain. 5 wt 9 ft. I could buy a second spool, in fact I guess that is the best answer. But I also have a sinking leader I sometimes use (with a way too long leader, will tie on a much shorter one tomorrow!) with my floating line. Switch between dry, dry dropper, sinking leader with small streamers. Does that make sense or is that just such a kluge it makes little sense?

Hey Brian, Another great video. I have learned a lot from your site and videos from your entire team. I am new to fly fishing with less than 1 season under my belt and just a couple lessons. I am running a 5wt rod and real with 6 wt weight forward line (Airflo Ridge Bass/Muskie) fishing for bass primary with light streamers and crayfish flies. I am good at short distance casting but once i get past that tapered section ( 30 ish feet) it gets ugly am i asking too much from this set up or do i need to go back to school?? Any tips???

Great explanation with the drawing board and actual fishing footage, my problem with sinking lines is only the texture of the line they are too hard and thin in diameter, but my line is an old one, so my favorite fly line brand is airflo due to the soft texture of their lines I guess has to do that they are pvc free, so I just asking if airflo sinking lines are soft as their dry lines thanks. 🙏

Another excellent video. One Question. If you have a 6 weight rod and let's say a buddy gave you a Kelly Galloup line for an 8 weight rod. Can it be cut back to match the 6 rod? Also would you then have a line that sinks faster than 6 line that matches rod?

Greetings from czech republic. Thank you very much for this video, it is very helpful. I would really love to gain insight into sinking lines. I would like to ask about micro/trout-skagit lines. For example OPST makes Commando groove Intermediate Heads, Scientific Anglers made Spey Lite Skagit Intermediate Heads/Integrated Lines. These heads/lines should be combined with various types of sinking tips... What is a diference between "standard sinking lines" (full sinker, sinking head or sinking tip) and these single hand micro/trout skagit heads? Are these skagit heads used just for swinging flies across and downstream in comparison to "standard sinking lines" which acording to this vidos should be used for fishing upstream with active retrieve? According what should I decided when to swing a fly downstream or when fish it upstream with active retrieve? I hope that these questions make sense...:) Cheers. Andrew.

hi there. i understand this video has been out for a while, hopefully you can still answer my question. you made a comment that once a sinking line is stripped, the sinking line stops sinking. my question is, does a sinking line begin to stop sinking once river current moves the line too. i will admit that i was one of those fly anglers who wouldn't promote sinking lines in any river capacity. Since watching you and Kelly talk about the use of sinking lines in rivers and streams, i have totally changed my mind set. Thank you guys!

Brilliant, when I use an intermediate line on the lake, its difficult to take the line off the surface like a floating line. I have to retrieve it once nearly to the end of the line and make a roll cast to start again. I am unsure if you mentioned this possible problem in describing the retrieve. Kind Regards-Ray

Great video! Got a question on using a shorter leader for sinking lines. If I don't have the thick line to build a leader, can I just cut off the middle 4' of a 9' tapered leader to make it a 5' leader? Cutting it out from the middle should keep a thick butt section and the desired tippet size, or would that not work?

Digging through my old fly gear I found a package of Twiston line lead. Have you ever used this product, and if so, how do you feel about it compared to split shot? I also found my 30 year old container of Muculin for my leaders If I remember, since my 30 year old Scientific Angler flyline still floats. This old line is great for casting practice, and it still floats well.

I know a lot of pike fly fishing guys fish rivers with sinking lines and we all use stripping baskets exactly to avoid getting our lines snagged or tangled. I find it weird to see so few US anglers using stripping baskets. Do you know any particular reason as to why that is? Great instrumental video BTW 👌

Just wondering ...is there a reason you are not suggesting a fluorocarbon leader since it also sinks? And if a fluorocarbon leader should we use the same equation?

I fish sink lines on still waters. I would fail to stop a fast sink dropping in the water with a steady retrieve. Only a fast retrieve will slow it. I can get a Di 2 to almost stop with a fast retrieve. Is there something wrong with my lines. They are Rio. Oh casting bigger distance might have something to do with it, as the line is in the water for a lot longer. And the whole sink section in water might be something to with it.

Would a stripping basket solve the problem of keeping a full sinking line out of the water if you are wade fishing? Inquiring minds want to know. About that talking too much, you have been hanging with Kelly, right? Keep the good stuff coming guys.

I’m always worried that such a heavy streamer will hurt my rod. I have a streamer x so I know it shouldn’t. But should I be forward casting barely before it loads all the way to take pressure off the rod?

I have other question regarding fly lines. I would like to ask what is causing that nowadays their prices has increased so drastically? I remember that few years ago high end fly line could be purchased for around 65-70 USD which was more acceptable. Now it is around 100 USD for good line which is slowly reaching the level of the absurd. No matter how good particular fly line is it is still only the piece of the plastic laundry string.

Surprised Brian uses mono (which floats) instead of fluoro (neutral or sinks) considering in his discussion one of his reasons for using short leaders is to keep the fly down

What does it accomplish. Well, bearing in mind what I mentioned. About the 'niche' application of some of these things (such as the 'diver' bass flies that Brian mentioned working better on intermediate sinking tip lines). You're still very much fishing with. A full floating line. And most of the behavior of the line and fly on the end. Is dominated by the behavior of it. As a full floating line. You have to aware of what you can do, or can't do. Using a full floating line. It's a line that everyone should be familiar with. Because it's versatile in lots of ways. What the poly leader attachments to at the end (even the 'ten foot' sinking poly leaders). What they do is they modify slightly. How the whole thing casts, and how it operates in the water. Not very dramatically. But in subtle ways. That the angler can make use of.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
If you're river was fast and wide for example. You might select a 'fat' type of nine or ten weight full floating line. To have the comfort. To be able to cast or shoot line at distance. All day long. Kelly Galloup for example talks. About with his 'full sinking' type lines. When the White River in Arkansas is high up in terms of water level (in practical terms, there is more river to cover). Kelly will have an eight weight fly rod and line. Just for that occasion. He's stepping up a gear. To match the size of the river. When it's swolen. However, if that is not the case. Kelly will quickly modify his tackle. To stay down at seven weight, or even go down to six weight. For lower water still. Sometimes though anglers in wide rivers, with fast water (due to higher gradient). And when the water has a lot of flow in it from rainfall. You might find those nine and ten weight 'full floating' lines are acceptable (it's a totally different experience throwing a full floating line, as opposed to full sinking). An eight weight full sinking, might be like throwing a ten weight full floating.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
What tends to happen with poly leader sinking tips. Is you can add them to the end. Of a larger diameter full floating fly line. And what happens is. When you're river speed is too fast. That poly leader attachment at the end. Will contribute to slowing down the speed at which the fly moves (because a fatter, large diameter 'full floating' line is going to get caught by water current). And it will impart a lot of un-wanted downstream pull on your flies often (which results in those flies getting dragged up to the surface too). So looking at Brian's Story about the bass in the Amazon river. That was the problem there too. The guy added the nine foot tapered leader. To the end of his full sinking line. And the fly he was fishing (some of the streamers can have a lot of buoyancy on their own). And they streamer flies will move back up to the surface. If there is not something to hold them at a lower level.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 года назад
It is the same. The exact same in fishing fast rivers, that have width to them. You're powerful, large diameter full floating line is nice. It enables you to get the fly 'out there'. But then it creates a problem. Of where the water current grabs the floating line. And does way too much to it. A poly leader attached to the front of the floating line. Occasionally can do just enough. To negate the impact of that fast current. On a larger diameter full floating line. And it's similar to what Brian said about the intermediate sinking tip lines. That 'three feet' of intermediate at the front. Just does something remarkable. To the effectiveness. Of how the popping flies 'pop' in the water (popping flies 'push' some water in front of them). So they have to dig into the surface of the water. And create a kind of 'wave' in front of them. You need to add just a little bit of added line density. At the end of the line. And it works better. It's the same with poly leaders sometimes. And full floating lines. It gives a normal 'wet fly' (swinging wet flies, single hook etc). Just a little bit of capability. To find their depth, and their speed. In a wet fly swing. Enough that the fish can see it.
