The Ultimate Guide to Watch Maintenance

Much like cars, watches are machines, and all machines need maintenance work from time to time. Some are nice and easy like Toyotas, and some are more like Land Rovers…
With modern watches, maintenance is straightforward. You’ll only need to get it serviced if it stops running or if the accuracy starts deviating significantly. For most modern watches, you’re looking at a tune up roughly every 5-10 years depending on how much wear and tear you put it through.
Vintage watches, especially vintage watches with complications, will require work. If you don’t want a lot of hassle, choose either age or complexity. And if you really want a hassle-free watch, I’d recommend going with a quartz watch since battery powered movements are simpler and more durable compared to their mechanical counterparts.

I got myself my first mechanical chronograph watch with a ETA 7750 movement this past Christmas. I dropped it on a hardwood floor from waist heigh two weeks ago and the chronograph function stoping working correctly. The manufacturer is graciously fixing my watch for free under warranty. Thank you Tissot! But now I learned my lesson and will be much more carful.

Annoyingly, my formerly most durable watch that I love, my Squale 1521, has been out for repair twice in the last 2 years. Crown/movement issues that come from the 4 o'clock crown placement. I've babied it as well after the first repair. Now thinking of selling it when it's repaired to see if I can buy a BB58, since some of the love is gone.

A BB58 is certainly known for being reliable, and the build quality is more robust than what you'd get with a Squale. Some times finnicky watches reach the point where they're no longer worth the stress.

the fear of sending an antique watch to it's origins is that they might simply replace the mechanics with new ones and there by ruining it's value or having a watch that no one can fix because it's manufacturer is no more. both are my situation, inherited a wrist watch that dates back to 1942 and the other is a silver pocket watch that dates back to 1890-1895

But why does it matter that they put a new movement in?

@@Rob_Smoke I have a 1800's gold pocketwatch from my great grand fathers-father, I wouldn't change a thing about it that would make it worthless.

I’m scared to get my Rolex serviced. I feel like they could steal parts and replace them with other parts.

Why some people spend thousands of pounds on a Rolex watch and then hundreds of pounds on servicing I'll never know!! and then the risk of theft and insurance too. I've just spent £1 on an omega. from a charity shop. ok. probably a fake but it works fine !!! Yeahhh !!!
