Lonnie Dobbins III , if you notice, he was bust some people’s ball’s. There is truth in comedy. The comedians and actors, that didn’t take it seriously were spared. But he destroyed a few people with his quick wit , combined with their ego’s. Martin Short is a quick study and comedic genius. He’s Canada’s version of Mark Twain.
I don’t think people realize how fast you have to be on the draw to come up with these comebacks. When he even catches other comedians off guard with his quickness you can see their surprise
While it's true Martin Short is very quick-witted and clever, there's also another dimension to his admirable skill: he's constantly coming up with (and writing down) new ideas, jokes, funny words or turns of phrase, and other comedic stuff that he can "plug in" to various situations as needed. That's the case with most professional comedians: they have a "store" of material they've previously prepared, which can be plugged into various scenarios as needed. It's part of what makes them such good comedians.
Yorick you are right on the money. He has his lines ready to go. I've actually heard Martin use the same lines before. He's on of a kind. Not just someone who improvises like this dimwit in the comments thinks lol
I was so hilarious to watch Glick evolve with each interview: a plate of donuts, thick black-rimmed glasses, and the phone call in the middle of the interviews😂😂😂 So funny.
Martin was great doing this bit because from what I've read there were no rehearsals between him and the celebs, and they agreed to do it and Martin still managed to make many of them uncomfortable. They didn't even see Martin Short playing a character because they would get so caught up in the moment. Genius👍🏻
I know not everyone get it or appreciates it but, honestly, I find the whole Jiminy thing a work of art; simply a level of genius that Martin had, brought, shared. Brilliant!
Martin Short's ability to be able to (seemingly) put someone down in a funny way without being nasty is pure comic genius, though sometimes here I did have to hold my breath waiting on some of the celeb's responses.
With a few exceptions like calling Alec Baldwin "next door to an ape" LOL! Then again....given how he talked to his daughter in that phone message, perhaps that was appropriate.
I think people use underated too loosely these days. It's a sign of the teenager. Be careful they eat chips and don't work but somehow have a lot of coin.
What’s so great about these interviews is that the celebrities were aware of the character ( or they wouldn’t have agreed to do it), but they genuinely had no idea what he was going to say. Hence, their reactions. Some of these people were his good personal friends.
@@FloraWest Seriously, he was on SCTV with greats like John Candy Eugene Levy Catherine O'Hara Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis. Although as someone raised in Canada it's been in reruns since it ended so you see it no matter what generation lol, probably not as big elsewhere.
@@JellyBabie1984 I was/am a *huge* SCTV fan. I would watch it and tape it and watch it again when we got it in the States. I had articles about it in a scrapbook. But Martin Short wasn't a cast member until the early '80s. He joined...maybe the second season they were broadcast on NBC? I remember he came a bit later than Candy/Flaherty/Levy/Martin/Moranis/O'Hara/Thomas. (I know earlier casts had Ramis and also Robin Duke and Tony Rosato, who were later on some not great seasons of SNL). Anyway! Sorry for that trip down memory lane. The point is Martin Short wasn't on SCTV in the '70s. I was just wondering if he was on another show that didn't make it out of Cananda. Would love to see it.
@@FloraWest I remember him as Johnny Del Bravo on the David Steinberg show on CTV and on Ferguson, Short, and Ross on TV Ontario, both before he went to SCTV.
He created one of the most original comedy characters. And in doing so, he was able to satirize and parody a bunch of talk show hosts whom he grew up watching on TV. Great fun. I often wish I could rip into people savagely like Jiminy does. :D
@@m1l1t1am1ke Oh, you misunderstood me there. Jiminy Glick the character is a spoof of several talk show hosts of the 50s through the 80s (like Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, Dinah Shore, Mike Douglas), but I suspect that a lot of the personality Martin Short did as Glick was based on the demeanor and mannerisms of Merv Griffin. I was not talking about the celebs here that Martin Short is having fun disrespecting playfully. Hope this clarifies things.
@@eduardo_corrochio There's a public-access guy from back in the day who was named Skip E. Lowe that some say was the real-life Jiminy (at least in part).
To Ben Stiller's face, about lasting only 5 weeks on SNL: "Why didn't you write some sketches, do some characters, slick your hair back, and get a laugh? Was that too tricky for you?" So brutal and so true.
It’s awesome because they all know who he is and that he’s playing a character but they don’t know what he’s going to do or say. It’s ambush comedy at it’s finest and absolutely hilarious!
@@krankyjsmith9780 exactly!! They're actors, they know exactly what type of show this is. What kind of idiot would take a show like this seriously or even worse believe that the actors do 🤣🤣🤣. Oh dear lord....
@@fomofud9479 Because Martin Short busts balls like no-one else on earth, and as Jimminy Glick he is vicious. Of course they know it's a joke, but most are caught off-guard. They have to pretend to be all cool with it, but look for the subtle clues that they're not. Sorry -- 'subtle' means 'not obvious'.
@@krankyjsmith9780lol, you're creating scenarios in your head that just aren't there. I think you're projecting because of the emptiness you feel in your life.
I genuinely think Martin Short is the funniest person alive when it comes to discussions. Even his interviews with other people when he's not Jiminy Glick are hilarious.
I remember being a teen during the turn of the millennium and watching Jiminy on Comedy Central back then. Watching these clips now is so utterly nostalgic in the best way possible for me. Always been a big Martin Short fan but Jiminy is just next level hysterical.
God. That was therapeutic! Martin Short is so quick, always in character. Reminds me of how committed and absorbed in his characters that Johnathan Winters and Red Skelton were.
This show was just ahead of its time. It's now successfully running under the name "between two ferns". ZG was clearly influenced as the style, structure, and cadence are so similar!
Between 2 ferns is funny but its an entirely scripted show. Jiminy is literally off the cuff the entire time. This is next level comedic talent from Short
I totally forgot about this character, and the moment I saw the thumbnail it all came rushing back to me. Fucking amazing. One of the best troll characters ever
its like watching don rickles cubed. i never really thought insult comedy was all that funny until i saw jiminy. and i still think he is the only one who really pulls it off, with the exception of ricky gervais at the golden globes. i think part of the formula (besides m. short being funnier and wittier than d. rickles in pretty much every way) is that rickles was up on stage punching down at his audience of helpless strangers, while jiminy is going toe to toe with some of the funniest people on the planet and mops the floor with them every time. also, jiminy is such an out of touch loser that no one feel envious of him, which i think is key. jiminy can never punch down, because he is the bottom of the barrel.
I find Martin Short to be one of the best character actors. Whenever he gets into character he never lets up for a second that he's just actin'. Even when he's mockin' people he at the same time is entertainin' them.
This one made me smile Brad garrett : oh thats a mistake, you must have got that off the website. Jiminy : oh no theres so many books written about you.
One of the top 10 all-time funniest human beings. Extremely clever off-the-cuff curveballs. I've been a fan of Martin short since The Three Amigos in my childhood
This is The funniest character ever. Unfortunately comedy Central never really distributed the episodes so all the versions you can find are this shitty VHS quality. But in between the interviews on the comedy Central show there were like sketches with his family and stuff so there's a ton more content than what you can find on RU-vid, it's just locked in some mystery box somewhere
