In this video, we’re in Pismo Beach on Oceano Dunes! Also, check out Jonny Taco Outdoors’ video: • Stranded in the Mojave...
Before we talk about my exact build budget breakdown, which I plan on making an updated-for-2023 video for, let's discuss the basic considerations for building an extremely capable Lexus GX470, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Tacoma-or other IFS platform- Off-road/Overland build. 20k may seem like a lot for all these modifications, and trust me, I have found ways to come in well below that, but if you compare the capability, comfort, and reliability you can get with these rigs compared to the cost of a brand new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Tacoma Trail Hunter, or Ford Bronco Sasquatch, the value for dollar proposition makes a lot of sense. For me, the value-to-performance ratio starts to get a bit skewed when you get into custom work or extremely expensive parts like front long-travel, etc. You can get an insanely capable rig with the basic stock control arms and parts, while enabling less costly maintenance, broad replacement parts availability, and simplicity of repairs.
This video mainly covers recovery equipment, which may not translate into 'mods' per se, but you'll need parts like front recovery points or front steel bumper/winch mount, rear recovery points or hitch receiver D-ring shackle mounts, spare tire carriers like this one from Restless Off-Road: www.restlessoffroad.com/produ...

Such a good job putting the hood up. 👌🤙. Practicing using your recovery equipment is also so very important! People really need to hear this stuff. 🙏

Wasn't looking for this collection of info but this was such a condensed collection of very useful safety information and general counsel for people who own these kinds of vehicles (me) but who haven't really yet been able to use them in these situations - thank you. Keep up the great content.

Right on, that’s really the goal here. Just a base line of considerations you should have in mind before venturing too far off-road.

I have 140,000 on my 2006 GX. I always maintain it at the local Toyota shop. I am trying to decide if I should sell it or keep it and modify it. I also have a 1990 4Runner set up for rock crawling with 180,000 miles on it. I regret selling my clean stock 1987 4Runner. I bought it from my uncle who was the original owner. It was real clean and never off road.

The GX makes for an incredible light off-road/overlander. It’s quiet, comfortable and totally daily drivable. I’d just do some light mods for some overlanding and use the 4Runner for the rocky stuff. You can definitely rock crawl with the 470 though, it just requires a bit more money to get it to the level where it’s ready for that

Enjoyed this concise straight to the point video. I had a question. Why use a soft shackle to connect your winch hook to the bow shackle. It would just introduce another failure point thay could allow the metal hook to fly back at your car. If u connect the hook directly to the bow shackle, that will not break before the winch rope breaks. Much safer as all the heavy metal wont be flying around.

Thanks for watching. Good question. The answer is reducing metal to metal contact which can scratch off the powder coat more quickly on both items (the hook and D-ring shackle). I live by the beach so corrosion can be an issue over time without proper coating. Using the rope is a bit less abrasive. Both methods work, but I had full confidence in the soft shackles i was using.

@lexus_offroad_adventures fair enough. I see your point. But what price is your life vs a bit of surface rust. Bow shackles and that hook are very thick metal. The rust would take a loooong time to structurally impact them

@lexus_offroad_adventures 4 месяца назад
@@user-fr5pl1zf5f again, I have full confidence in the soft shackles. It’s also worth noting that soft shackles provide a favorable damping effect so you don’t shock load the metal components, so the likelihood of any breakage goes down further when using rated soft shackle equipment imo. Rust does take a bit of time (although it is accelerated near the beach) but you also very seldom use these components. I want them to be structurally sound for a very long time. In the future I will probably upgrade to a factor55 aluminum hook so I don’t need to consider this potential issue.

Hi I just got a 2005 lexus gx470 and am looking to do a very simple build . lift maybe 2 inches and throw some 31s on it for a small boost in off road capabilities nothing too crazy. You mentioned looking getting a compressor for airing up your tires, would that be necessary for thing like logging trails or even beach or dune driving? Also would you recommend an engine mounted compressor or could I get a simple compressor to run out of the 110v plug in the back of the gx?

If you’re going off road at all, especially driving on sand,you need a compressor. You should definitely air down at the beginning of the trail for ride comfort but also better grip and traction. For sand, this is even more of a critical step, as you will need the extra tire surface area from airing down in order to stay on top of the sand. In order to air down, you need to be able to air up after the trail! I would not use the 100w plug for anything. Instead, get a compressor that hooks up directly to your battery terminals. That way there will be no issues with blowing fuses.

I wonder if the AHC can be used for tire air pressure … Ya know. From the air bag suspension …

Lots of questions like what does the chassis look like? Is it rusty or clean? Is there a detailed service record other than the TB and WP? You can create an account on the Lexus owners site: www.lexus.com/My-Lexus/account/create-account Then add the VIN of the GX you are looking at and it should at least allow you to see what servicing has been done at Lexus dealers. If no TB kit has been done at Lexus, then last thing you can do is pop off the cam covers and check the condition of it to see if it’s safe to drive. But definitely budget to have that service done if the record is at all fuzzy.
