The Lexus GX470 is the pinnacle of practicality, off-road capability, reliability, and affordability. Let's explore how to make the most of this platform with modifications, whether DIY or professionally installed, and get out on the trail!
@@BrianPapini yes there are a few fuses to pull. I believe I covered that in my rear air bag replacement video as well as my really old video installing my eibach pro truck kit on my other GX
@@jessicapeacock7530 give yourself an hour per side. Take your time, organize your hardware so you don’t forget where it goes, and when working with plastic clips use finesse instead of force.
I need the exact same color you installed on your GX, but it looks like the tan colored Coverado seat covers aren’t available on the link you provided. Do you have another link or source for these covers?
You should steel wire brush the caliper brackets under where the anti rattle clips go. And the pads should move easily in the caliper. If too tight, clean better.
This looks so good!! I just recently bought my 08 and HATE the wood grain. Feels like I’m driving my grandmas car around. I was having a hard time deciding on a color to go with the tan/brown interior but think this matches well. Congrats to you and your beautiful wife, btw! 🎉
New to the GX/ off-road scene. You mentioned putting the transfer case back in high. Excuse the noob question but should I be doing that for any normal/ highway driving? Haven’t done any off roading yet and have always just left the transfer case in neutral driving around. Apologies for the newb question! Awesome video!
Hey welcome! No your transfer case was not in Neutral when you are driving around. It just kinda looks like that. To answer your question: Yea, you are always in High during normal driving. Low range is for low speed crawling, Neutral disconnects all engine power from the drivetrain (for towing, mostly) and High is for normal driving.
Yeah but what happens when your just gassed up your going 80 down the highway trying to drink your coffee and eat your donut and the semi next to you has a blowout and causes you to make a high speed maneuver? They don’t put sway bars on every vehicle just because its fun there is a huge safety feature you’re not addressing
Great video. I just finished this job and I have one extra tip for the top nut on the shock, which ultimately took a couple hours to sort out for the first one, while all the rest of the job took no more than 20 min per side. When the top nut is inevitably rusted in place and just won't break free, no matter how hard you try, and with much-o releaser oil, and trying every tool you have, you can use a nut splitter, available for about $18 at the local hardware store, to break the nut and then turn it off. A torch or cutter isn't really an option on the left hand side, because the shock is not far from the gas tank and just below the fuel filler line - not a good place for flame or sparks. You'll also need a 1/2" impact wrench and a 3/4" impact socket to do this. (1) Slip the nut splitter up over the nut, with the cutter bit vertical and on a flat side of the nut - you'll need a light and a mirror to see whether the cutter is approximately vertical and on the nut. (2)Using a socket and a standard ratchet wrench on the nut splitter, tighten the cutter bit hard against the offending nut until you can't really turn it anymore. This will hold it in place for the impact wrench (3)Put the impact wrench on the nut splitter on its highest torque setting and let er rip. If the nut splitter works its way up off the nut before it has finished cutting through the nut, then start at step 1 again and make sure the cutter bit is lined up with the cut so far. (4)once the nut splitter has cut through the nut, squirt releaser oil into the cut in the nut and wait a few minutes (5)using whatever size wrench will fit snuggly on the now deformed and broken nut, turn it off. Both of mine came off easily after being split. As noted, the rest of the job will take about 20min following the steps in the video.
Looking at an 04 with 180k miles on it. Dealership wants $9,000. It is a GA truck, with an immaculate undercarriage. 3 previous owners, which is a little much, but none of them put a ton of miles on it. Still up in the air as far as pulling the trigger on it. What do you think?

If you have the A/C on, the engine seems to kinda overcompensate for the extra load of the A/C compressor and can give some extra torque. Just press the brake harder to stay still. This condition is heightened if you’re in low-range. Shorter gearing multiplies torque.
Hey, checkout Tinkerers adventure. He did a lot of tests on swaybars on toyota Ifs and found that removing just the rear sway bar actually limits your travel overall. He found that it's better to just have it on. But if you remove the front sway bar, you actually see an increase in both front and rear sway bar travel.
I see you’re trying to do your best with the knowledge that you have. although a lockwasher would never work like that there’s a reason it’s on the nut and not the bolt. And if you didn’t cut all your air lines and took your time, I have took these units off for a while now and replaced them and I have sold them up to $400. To individuals that would like to keep their airbags. That can’t afford the high price of a new ones.
Seem like this vehicle has some high and expensive concerns, no different from a Range Rover LR4...I have a 2002 RR P38 on its 22nd yr...not sure which one would cost me less between my p38 and getting a used GX470....
Great vid...Well done. Quick question: What happens in a torrential downpour rainstorm? My thought is that's a much more likely scenario to cause a massive amount of water ingress than spray from around the fender liner with tape. No?
Nope, I tested it at the end of the video with an absolute torrent from a car wash machine and it was totally dry. It’s been through many unusually intense California downpours as well and no issues. I’m just glad I don’t have to worry about that air scoop in the fender well enabling water to lock up my engine anymore. Super happy with this mod
@@lexus_offroad_adventures Thank bro! Yes, I made the comment before I saw the car wash test at the end. I'm sold, and thanks a lot! I'm going with 35's now too, and going broke watching your vids! Thanks again.
This is a 2004 GX. There is no difference between a front/rear camera. They are just triggered with any 12V signal. Backup lines can be turned off in settings.
This is a really well done video, thanks for taking the time to present it comprehensively. I am an avid overlander and just purchased an '08 to do a build on. With such a wide variety of varying reviews on replacement head units, I am curious about your thoughts now that you've a year under your belt after install?
I really feel like I am missing nothing compared to any new vehicle technology-wise (other than the ADAS safety systems, which I don’t even want). Many new vehicles don’t even have wireless CarPlay! This unit has been flawless. You just need to make sure you have a non-nav GX. Nav GXs have to consider other options
This is an excellent video. It shows the full build, the smaller components in addition to the main pieces, and you explain why. Two things. I will not fix the flexible solar panel. I am in Canada, and the ability to place and move the panel and chase the sun is important. Second, when using double-sided tape, remove the protective paper tape after you have secured one side and roll the paper tape off as you roll out the flexible panel. Love this, thank you
