Today, I talk about the Ultimate Mistakes People make when they move to Thailand or live abroad. I moved to Thailand a few years back and had learned from my mistakes from my previous trip living abroad. Today, In Pattaya, I catch up with Sam ‪@GoneAdrift‬ and we talk about the mistakes he made and how he was able to overcome them. We start off with a little motorcycle tour of Pattaya before heading to the lovely Bamboo Beach in Pattaya to chat about the mistakes expats and digital nomads make when moving to Thailand.

I’m astonished at the amount of stories that come out about guys who come to Thailand and blow their wad of cash in so little time and seemingly lose all self control. For the “2-week millionaire” it’s probably not a big issue as long as he stops this behavior when he goes back to his home country and does not become some Thai lady’s sponsor. For those who want to stay in the hotspots of Southeast Asia long term, then this type of behavior becomes perilous. I think most of these men who come to Thailand do not have enough experience with women in general to understand female nature, spot the red flags and know how to control themselves. I think they come to Thailand broken and to escape something. Maybe they’re trying to run from politics, a failed relationship or they have had little to no success dating women in their own country. So they come to Thailand, Philippines, etc., looking for love, attention, and to get fixed and they end up falling victim to a local woman and the lifestyle and get taken for everything they have. It’s tragic. If you’re a broken guy, Southeast Asia will not fix you. You have to do that yourself.

I would say the vast majority of western men moving to Thailand is to escape western women and the stifling gynocentric culture, out-of-control hypergamy and altogether failed dating system.

I'm so glad that the ~2 months I spent in Phuket, I didn't partake in the "nightlife". I dated two women, both from Phattalung: one worked in a 5-star hotel and the other a burger joint. Both tended to enjoy fairly simple dates like going to temples and parks. They still had flaws but being hooked on partying wasn't one of them, thankfully. (I also don't drink alcohol, so that helps.)

Hey Adam and Sam! Great video, as usual. I’d like to add one more mistake people make when they move to and/or visit Thailand. They don’t clear their hearts and minds of preconceived notions based on their experiences in their home country. These notions can (and most likely will) make your time in Thailand less than what you expected or what it can be.

@@parnpichate Ok, here are at few in no particular order. 1. Thailand is a “third world country”, nothing can be farther from the truth. 2. Thailands economic systems are inferior to most western nations capitalism-based economies. 3. Thai people will understand English (or your countries language. Many do, but a lot don’t. Learn a few words in Thai before you travel there or at least learn how to use Google Translate. 4. Don’t base your opinion on Thai women based on RU-vid videos of Bangkok or Pattaya. 5. Do not underestimate the intelligence of the Thai people, many are better educated than most of us. 6. Do not, ever, underestimate or disrespect a Thai person causing a Thai person to “lose face”, you Might get you ass kicked. There’s a lot more, but generally do not go to Thailand with expectations and keep your mind open to learning more about Thai society.

I mean you probably could have lived off your savings. Rent a place, food, gym membership and transportation for less than 1k a month. The rest is for entertainment, and you still won't have to spend more than 20 k annually. If your savings is giving you 3 to 5% you can coast to 55. If you're going crazy it's just cuz you haven't lived like this before, but now it's outta your system.

In 2022 I decided to live in Bangkok for a month in order to see if I could potentially see myself living abroad. I was easily able to live within a certain budget (even coming home with unspent money) but I did that by avoiding the tourist hotspots, bar scene and living more like a local vs expat. I enjoyed the night markets, took regular trips to the local grocery store (even though I didn't cook much) and predominantly used the MRT/BTS and my own feet to navigate the city. As you become wiser you learn that being drunk is a waste of time and money and you typically won't meet quality people. I'd much rather enjoy coffee or tea and a stimulating conversation over loud music and people overindulging in other things. The key takeaway is do you value short expendable friends/relationships or people that will be with you for a long time to come.

Where is the place you can get breakfast for 50thb? I will be in Pattaya & Jomtien soon. Also a slight correction to something.. 67 is the age everyone can acceess their superannuation, even if they still work, however, ou can access your super at 60 as long as you've permanently retired. If you end an employment arrangement on or after age 60, you can access the super you've earned up until then, so if someone is retired in Thailand at 55, they only need to wait 5 years, not 12, which is good news.

@travelsolo2677 It depends on their age I guess & what they do with it. If someone is around 55 & been getting paid superannuation for most, if not all of their working life, which they should have been, they should have $200k+ in superannuation. Put $200k in an account with a 5% interest rate, which is possible, that's $10k a year in interest which would cover most costs in Thailand, assuming the person is not a party animal that goes out most nights.

If you are planning to retire in Thailand you probably need to have done the party thing and got it out of your system and do something more laid back and cheaper when you retire. I have had a 30 odd year relationship with Thailand and have done the party thing and such, had a condo in Bangkok for 10 years or so and now live up country in a village in the NE where I am pretty happy. Great thing about Thailand is there is so much to do and so many places you can visit so when I need a break from country life we jump in the pickup and go have a trip or just fly somewhere like Vietnam, etc. But make sure you are setup financially before you retire!

I'd love to live and work out there. I'm a DJ with a tonne of experience but from what I've heard, not only would I take a massive hit on fees compared to what I can earn here, but a DJ is classed as an adult entertainer and visas are tough to get, unless you're a big name international DJ - which I'm not. I usually work 2 evenings per week which pays all my bills and gives me a good standard of living. I think if I were to move out there and try the same, I'd be working double the hours per gig, and I'd be expected to work 6 or 7 nights per week. Not really my idea of a nice life in my early 50's.

There's a certain type of person (men mostly) who think SE Asia is going to change their life for the better when it comes to women and money. Everything is cheaper than the west and beautiful willing women are everywhere. So these guys just assume all they need to do is get off the plane and everything will fall magically into their laps. Did that ever happen to them at any point during their lives? Hell no, and it won't in SEA either. This shouldn't have to be said, but if you're looking for a serious relationship that won't break your bank account you need to not be hunting in the bars and clubs of Pattaya or Angels City same as in your home town. This should be painfully obvious really, but so many seem oblivious to reality.

So many of these videos of guys having endless problems with Southeast Asian women seems to demonstrate that relationships with Western women are LESS trouble and LESS of a threat to your finances than Southeast Asian women today IF you have a bit of game. If you don't you're kind of screwed no matter what.

I'm not wealthy, but I have a game plan for early retirement. I plan on working till age 55 here in the U.S., continuing with savings and investments along the way. I should be able to have enough saved up by then to comfortably bridge the gap till the retirement age to collect pension/social security checks at age 62. I also will have the option of being able to work in Thailand, but I have no plans to do so. I think if you have a plan, then living in Thailand and enjoying an early retirement is very realistic and achievable.

Sounds like a good plan. Hopefully not too many more years until then.

Good plan. Get your retirement visa before you come. Navigating Thai immigration can be a frustrating nightmare.

The early retirement was fatal for a lot of people i knew a decade or so ago. Back in 2004 the uk pound had hit an exchange rate of about 76 Baht to the pound and everything was dirt cheap anyway. B40 beers B1500 long time that kind of thing. These guys sold up and moved thinking they had plenty of money to last until 65 (state pension age at the time). Within a few years the pound had lost nearly half its value and Thai prices were shooting up. Unfortunately they had burnt there bridges at home. Some saw the writing on the wall, bit the bullet and returned home but others just ended up as Balloon chasers. I think sometimes when you meet grumpy old ex pats who seem to hate life this is pretty much there back story. Obviously not everyone fell on hard times but this video did make me think about some old friends.

@mino5931 the Euro was 52.5 back in 2004, good times. This was the era of the Bell ringers in bars. I think the real problem for retirement in Thailand is hitting 70 plus. Not that I've looked into it but based on my escalating travel insurance I get the feeling medical could wipe out your pension.

I always found it a bit scary that The Sanctuary of Truth a completely wooden structure has NO sprinkler system. In case of 🔥 Thank you for sharing mistakes made so we don't do the same thing. In about 5 years I will retire in Pattaya. I will treat the first Friday of Every month Like it is my first time in Pattaya and spend some cash on Soi 6 etc... I will keep busy with Hobbies like hiking and fishing. I agree that there is nothing wrong with doing Nothing.

Yeah that’s the exact attitude to go with, when I moved to Thailand I told myself only 1 night out a week until I was earning money, that was enough to stay focused and have a “weekend” to look forward to 😊

Hi guy. I've just stumbled onto your videos and respect what you do. I had been goin to Thailand for over 20 years and agree with Ur advise. I also left my card in an ATM in Bangkok 😂. I'm not sure if you mentioned in other videos but my biggest mistake was having my card cloned. BKK suhkemvit soi 7 park hotel. Checking out, got tapped on the back from someone asking if I wanted a taxi, as I turned around the guy had swiped my card on a reader. Strangely enough around 3 week later the copied card was being used in Australia. (I'm in England) before that I was naive and put my cards in a safety box in hotel reception. At night they rifle through these boxes cloning cards, dipping in customer cash etc. Maybe you have mentioned these issues in other videos but if not, please warn folks.

Been here 8 years, and for what my opinion is worth. If you want to enjoy living in Thailand, you have to budget, but more important, you have to maintain an income flow. An example would be if it cost me 80k baht per month to live here, I would need to make 100k baht per month, that said, you can live as a Thai does for much much less, but if you want quality food, you need reserves, big reserves, otherwise, life is not going to be comfortable in Thailand. I take my hat off to both you guys as young as you are, but I waited till I was 55, did the hard yarns, invested and now am eating the fruit from the seeds I planted a long times ago. All of that said, super can be accessed at 57 with some tax payable, 60 with no tax payable and well the pension 67, but not before you return to Australia to do the 2 year sitting rule, which is a bummer.

Rule of thumb for Thailand and Philippines is to move there with 400k in the bank if you don't plan to work but at least 200 k if you plan to work

I am glad I made the right choice for work, and thought about the long term... I will get to retire at 50 and have access to my pension and 457 Plan right away.. 8 more months left till I make my way to Thailand. Hopefully I get to enjoy 10 years of retirement before I kick the bucket... The profession I'm in, we last an average of 10 years....
