@@LucaDavoli_ I can understand why he sees it as one. Normal western RPG's don't usually have party members and party combat. Doing quests to get other followers and such is pretty typical for JRPGs. But this must be one of the most western style JRPG that I know off and it is truly underrated.

Just because party-based RPGs are much more abundant in JRPGs, doesn't mean western RPGs don't usually have them as well. The whole party-based system was literally derived from Dungeons and Dragons, a western board game. And pretty much every western RPG we know today was inspired by DnD in some capacity.

I am nerding-out with Pathfinder: Kingmaker (by Owlcats Games), BUT players must be warned it is challenging and a bit stressful for me even (I do not want to fail my kingdom building, etc.). ps: I play with pen-and-paper difficulty (damage done and received are flat 1:1 ; except critical hits because they are insane in Pathfinder). - also loved Pillars of eternity, though I understand many players get burnt out early on in the game.

Funny how actual rpgs are not in this list and action/hack&slash/choose you own adventure populate the S tier.

I really thought he was going to go B-tier for KCD, I was cracking my knuckles for writing an angry comment about it. KCD is A-tier at least

From what I played of it the game is enjoyable but sadly it is so damn buggy and unstable. For one I can't even use a bow without the game crashing, half the time quests either break or the textures freak out then the game crashes, every hour or so the game will just crash, and then you have the God awful load times. I kid you not the average load time for me is about 5 to 10 minutes. But looking past those problems it is a good game but id personally say bottom B or top C because the load times and instability

@@svartrbrisingr6141 was that near release by chance? The game was a buggy mess on release, but I found it to be totally fine after a few patches. In fact it seemed much less buggy than most games like it, after the patches.

@@thefolkbloke6656 I got it about half a year ago. But for one I got it one ps4 and for two I haven't been able to update it. It's a 48 gig update and I have no Wi-Fi I know it's much better after the patches but since I'm unable to get it updated I have to judge it by what I know. If it was stable and not very buggy then it's an easy A tier

That’s what I was thinking it’s my favorite jrpg of the generation, the end game on that one and the true ending is s+ teir for me. Also nino kuni 1 and 2 which are similar are s teir for me

Trying to listen to something else or turning off the music does not sit right with me either when experiencing a game. I'm not alone with that opinion about the music but hey, not all games are for everyone

The problem with DA:2 is that it seems that they limited the game on purpose so it can be an "in-between" game from Origins to Inquisition, even though I loved the blood mage from DA:2, I pretty much did a speedrun so I could play Inquisition asap lol, and its the only DA that I haven't replayed since then, pretty boring

Game is too limited in depth, don't expect too much from AA titles. If it was AAA (like Starfield) then I'm sure it would have been better.

You should take a look into the mediocre direction, if you ever revisit the world notice how bland everything is. It still baffles me that the same people who made Pillars, New Vegas and Tyranny (the latter of which is criminally underrated, it's playing a dark side figure done right) made the outer worlds so boring really.

@@tobiasL1991 Not the same people. The team that made NV also worked on Pillars. Tyranny and Outer worlds are different teams. There is overlap but the main creative teams for these three projects were entirely different. People always say the 'team that made FONV are gone' but that isn't true.

Certainly doesn't deserve an F. I feel a lot of the placement of these games is always relative to other games by the same studio or in the same series. If you asses Fable 3 on everything it did individually and compare it to other games on the list, it's nowhere near an F.

Driving around in the world was also fun. At least some nice landscapes. The major problem of Andromeda is its writing and characters. The bugs where not even that bad when compared to what Cyberpunk delivered.

I played it for the first time last year, and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. Definitely enjoyed my time with it, despite not thinking I was going to. I think it gets a lot more flak than it deserves because of it's launch. New Vegas had a considerably worse launch, but it had some REALLY strong writing holding it up, which mass effect andromeda doesn't have the same degree of help. I think it's a solid game, yet still the unloved step-child of the mass effect series.

Inquisition is sick (ofcourse origins is way better) and AC Odyssey is a kick in the balls to the fans. Don't really understand his choice here.

you haven't missed out on anything.. games are a waste of productive time.. so are movies/series etc..

@@sabus1265 it's ok now, the outsiders dlc did make it a lot better and brought that classic fallout feel, but its still the buggiest Bethesda game. It makes fallout 4 look way better and like an actual rpg. If your experience is different than that's fine, I'm just talking about mine.

It has like 3/4 missions in the actual story rest is just companion quests, which are good but that shouldn't come at the cost of the actual story. ME1 did story well but hasn't aged well gameplay wise ME2 did companions well ME3 did story and combat well

Honestly the greatest series of games I have ever played, even considering the ending (at first release) was underwhelming. Given the updates they made with dlc and the fact it would be a remaster I would easily play through the trilogy again several times, absolutely some of the best characters of any game ever, period.

oh man... i've played this game so many times! it's so good

@@rafaelvieira2845 it's the only rpg i took my time the first i played it. I stayed in the first two maps for like 30 hours just absorbing every dialogue. most of the time in other games, i skip through the talking but dos2 has a charm in it's dialogues.

And all the possibility the game has,l to solve each quest, is just amazing, tho I don't play with mods because I play in console (tho, now there are some gift bags), the game is an amazing experience.

a sequel got confirmed kindaish the developer said he loved to make a sequel but he needs a yes from the higher ups!.

Dragons dogma will always be S tier to me just because the gameplay is so fun and I tend to prioritise gameplay the most above other elements in a game. I love how different the classes play and all the abilities you can get with them. Some of the quests were pretty boring, but having an RPG with a great combat system more than made up for it. Even though it's a flawed game, it's a gem to me.

I just played it on switch finished all including the end game BBI about 85 hours to 100% everything. Absolutely great game honestly

I don’t Matty has ever played a Piranha Bytes game. In his Gothic Remake video, he said he tried the original Gothic just to compare it to the remake teaser, but never ended up finishing the game. And he didn’t include any of the Gothic or Risen games in his 2000-2010 tier list. For me personally, I’d give Elex a high B, and I haven’t played Risen yet. Although, I played Elex on console, so maybe it’s better on PC. And I only ever played it once. I should replay it after I play the Risen games, which I own but just haven’t gotten to yet. I really hope we get an Elex 2 soon though, the story of Elex was really cool, and if they could just fix the combat I’m sure it would be a top tier RPG.

I agree with you brother, FF XIII made me shed a tear in the end, and the last game that did it was X. I was afraid of playing XIII because of reviews too, but once I did it became my second favorite FF of all time, and I've played every single one of them. My only problem with Lightning Returns is the "end of the world" vibe which gave me a lot of anxiety cuz of that fucking clock telling me how many time I have left before the game ends, I hated it lol. But XIII-2 has the best chocobo song when you ride a red one, and no one will change my mind about it. XD

Honestly it's one of the best RPG's i have ever played. I have never played a game where i have felt so powerful. The choices, the throne/war table room, the customization, the music, the characters, the dragons boss battles etc. And the fucking Trespasser DLC was just epic.

These comments are why I’m doing a 2020 review. There must be something I’m missing!

I think the issue is that because of all the filler stuff, the actual story missions fell short. The story missions they did have were so good but they just needed some more of them instead of a lot of the filler side quests. The areas were all even pretty cool to me. Just to much random side quests.

They spend a lot of time on the idea of making it co-op and then scrapped it very late in development. Hence all the base building etc. So the dialog and questing system wasn't nearly as fleshed out however the gameplay is very well done and it's not at all boring

Fallout 4 is more action than RPG, honestly. A lot of the time, you're just fighting stuff and the extent of endings goes down to factions having similar endings, barring the Institute. Vanilla, it isn't very fun as an RPG. Also, a huge nitpick I have it that you can't have Dogmeat and a companion at the same time without mods so that also brings it down for me.

I don't know if i missed it, but he talked about dragons age: Origins the first game being the best, reviewed the others and then I don't think Origins was added. I tried to look for it at the end thinking maybe I missed that part but didn't see it. Wonder if it would be S tier? Otherwise tho its a pretty good list I agreed with a lot of his placements

I love Inquisition but my all time favourite is Dragon Age Origins, I picked it up on release and played for months on end, I then played DA2 soon as it got released and I was in love with the series even more, Inquisition had a different feel to DA 1 & 2 but still did not disappoint. I'm really hoping for another installment in the series soon.

@YOZZii Yeah, you can get trapped in The Hinterlands trying to do EVERYTHING on the map. Don't worry about it. Go see another zone, come back, and chip away at it over time.

I downloaded Inquisition and al the DLCs last night. I never played much of it but Angry Joe gave it such a positive review that I felt like I needed to give it a full play through and pay attention to the story

DA2 story and cast of characters is still way better than Inquisition. About the DLC Jaws of Hakkon is just more of the same eternal filler this game suffers, the Descent is actually really good, and Trespasser is kind of boring, the only real good (very good indeed) part of Trespasser is the ending (which is actually the only reason people go nuts over it). Inquisition is not a bad game at all, but is nothing outstanding either. It is still very inferior compared to Origins, and it's better only in some things than DA2 while inferior in others. Inquisition was very lucky the Witcher 3 appeared later, otherwise it would had been totally overshadowed by it (that said, personally, I prefer Dragon Age, but we cannot deny the Witcher would have destroyed Inquisition for completely if it wouldn't have been delayed).

@@pennywisethedancingclown775 it is pretty good, I feel like it is A tier at best though, has a lot of flaws when you directly compare the gameplay to some of the old school games. Still probably my favorite game on the Switch other than BotW and the Xenoblade games.

@@Minekings101 imao it deserves nothing less than A tier. But yeah, its flaws, even in its best qualities, like the story and the characters are proeminent enough to disqualify it from S tier. Its one of my top 5 favorites with nier automata and the witcher, but objectively its below.

TBH its quite mediocre as an RPG.

If The Witcher 3 is a boss than it's like the first boss of Dark Souls 2, where you expect it to be a big deal and then it falls off the ledge within the first 5 seconds of the fight

Witcher 3 is good when it comes to entertaining characters and unique quests but the gameplay was just not fun. I get bored playing it tbh.

It deserves to be on this list. Few games match it's overall quality, polish and presentation.

Just watched this and thought exactly the same. Outside of sports games, FPS, puzzles games and maybe a few other genres, pretty much every game has some sort of 'RPG' mechanic. This doesn't mean it's an RPG though. In the same way that just because a game has duel-type combat, this doesn't make a it a fighting game like Tekken is. Honestly, I wouldn't consider FromSoftware games like Dark Souls or Bloodborne to be 'RPGs' at all. Fantastic games yes, but they're primarily action / combat focused dungeon crawlers. And Borderlands...is a looter-shooter (it's even listed as an action-based, first-person shooter on the google description of the game). IMO, a key aspect of what dictates whether a game is an RPG or not, is the ability for player choice, branching narrative / quest paths, and varying quest / gameplay outcomes, depending on the player's actions. Any game that lacks this, is not a real RPG, regardless of whether it's open-world, has skill progression trees, or dialogue options.

@@davidgagne7297 The gameplay is still gonna remain the same of course, however not much really happens in the hinterlands and the side quest stuff there is... Meh... Other areas are far better.

Also, if you're just playing to enjoy yourself and not to review the game, installing a few mods allows you to get through the repetitiveness and enjoy the actual story better. Specifically I recommend two mods: one that removes the looting animation and a mod that removes the war table mission timers. So much more enjoyable that way.

What route did you start with? Played Golden Deer and actually dropped it before finishing my first playthrough. Just felt the characters were too flat (although not as bad as Fates). Awakening and Echoes are the only ones released after 2010 that I have re-played.

@@Samuel-th6fw Not the original poster but, I started with the blue lions. I remember immediately taking a liking to Dimitri’s character, and I believe I had no mistake in doing so. His desire for revenge took me through the five stages of grief lol. I also adore Sylvain. He had me laughing throughout the entire game! You should definitely give the blue lions a shot if you haven’t already.

@@alurosf i bought it thinking i would love it..but i just cant get into it. about 12 hours in..i love the idea of it all, but i dont like how confusing and boring the monastery is and the battles are just ok (blue lions)

@@jamesvanderbilt201 Though I liked the monastery quests in the beginning, I can agree that doing them constantly got a bit tedious. To be honest, I stopped doing them toward the end of the game and found that I had way more fun in the main story.

It has a proper main story, which means the game can be completed almost just by playing just the main story. Progression happens primarily through the story as well which is how you obtain all of the legendary weapons.

The definition of RPG has eroded a lot in the last decade. Nowadays, it's just any game that has a leveling system, tbh.

True RPGs are games that allows you to change how the story progresses and how they would end. One factor that would add onto it is creating your own character, but whether or not it was preset or custom, it still needs the factors of progressing and changing your own story to be an actual RPG

@@kaiserium8551 Apparently you never played RPGs in the 90s... FF7 and FF9 don't have ways to change the story or character creation. They're RPG classics however.

With the internet and online gaming journalism, we're now seeing people trying to reconcile all of these contradictory definitions and games into something so vague and diluted that it has no meaning at all. For example the 'RPGfanatic' Carey martell has reduced the definition to simply a 'progression system' because it was the only way he could remain consistent calling Dragon Age and Final Fantasy 13 both 'rpgs'. Almost inevitably any more strict definition would discount one or the other or many other games. Others just use definitions totally inconsistently. They'll call Dark souls an RPG because of it's progression system but not Grand theft auto, Far Cry or Need for Speed.

Idk i feel like fallout 4 was too repetitive to be enjoyable at least for me

settlement system, voiced protagonist, no real dialogue choices, much less density of content per square compared to other bgs titles etc. I really liked the far harbor dlc though

@@leanio8740 Fallout 4 should be C or F tbh, far from an RPG. No choice-consequence, no morality system, no in depth character development, the plot goes in the same direction no matter what you do. Your only choice is which ending you get. It's extremely restrictive even for Bethesda's standards.
