@@evilsidsmonkey I suggest you look at mid seventies footage (videos and photos) of the pistols, he played numerous guitars. The white Les Paul is iconic, but it wasn’t played that much.
Dagan start a punk metal band, because u rock hard . The steve jones sound is the basis for all punk rock for my punk sound i have a 2021 epi LP custom alpine white with 490r/498t through a boss katana 2 100w head and a 2018 Epi LP custom Ebony with seymore duncan P-rails(P-90's) and i cause damage from venice beach to Orange county ca, great playing Dagan
This is really well done. And Steve Jones's tone has always grabbed me by the ears and demanded my full attention! You've done a fine job. Good to see Stave gets proper recognition these days. It doesn't have to be complicated to kick ass! Balls and attitude!
I was lucky enough my wife about 20 odd years ago won on EBay a white Les Paul signed dated and authenticated by Steve Jones dated from their first comeback tour in Finsbury Park in 1996, I believe it was originally offered as a prize in one of the UK guitar mags. Sadly it’s not a Custom just a Studio with gold hardware but it has turned that lovely cream yellow colour. I’d wanted a Gibson Les Paul since I was in my early teens in the late 70s always way beyond my price range so was well thrilled to get this particular Les Paul
@@BeesWaxMinder I didn't win the competition but a few years later the guitar was up for sale on Ebay so my wife bought it for me. I'd wanted a Gibson Les Paul for about 15 years always remember drooling over them in Tin Pan Alley and various guitar shops up London always out of my price range though
@@TheFairway8 that was good of her I love Denmark Street I remember entering that competition …I’m pretty sure it was in guitarist magazine (if it wasn’t it was in “guitar“)
Jonesy is such an underrated player. The dude just exudes rock and roll. The tone, the swagger, the unpretentious grab you by the ears tone, the rock solid riffage. And he got great! Every time he came back around he was better. He and Malcolm Young are two of my absolute heroes for those reasons.
Dagan, you've nailed that tone, sound, and feel better than any vid I've seen, apart from Steve himself. I hope you do a separate breakdown video for each Pistols track.
I saw them at the Winterland last show. Steve jones played, killed it! I went out 2 days later and bought a LP Jr what I could afford. I was a kid and my older brother worked for the promoter BGP taking pictures....
@@corneliuscrewe677 Troublemaker still my favorite. Reminds me of a GF I had at that time, she was with me at his Palladium NY Eve show after the album came out haha.
Wow - great timing; I learnt God save the Queen specifically for the jubilee, but that tone you got in such a simple ‘clean’ way - it’s stunning. Utterly inspiring video, I “must try harder”
I was still doing Jimi Hendrix meets Michael Schenker solo's when Sex Pistols dropped their album. I learned it by heart immediately, started a punkband with some guys, most of our songs were Sex Pistols and Damned covers lol, then I was asked to join the only Dutch punkband that had a record deal, we recorded some great songs and did a lot of great gigs at a lot of great places, I barely played a solo for at least 1-2 years, not until I bought a 1975 Gibson Flying V in '79, it totally pissed off the singer so I quit the band. Then I heard Van Halen 1 and started learning new riffs and solo's again, man those were crazy days!!! Ps: Dagan if ya wanna talk ADHD, i'm all ears 🤣😂🤣
Thank you, THANK YOU, T H A N K Y O U!!! for making this video. I had so much rebellious anger as a teenager during the 80's, I probably would have gone to prison had I not discovered the Pistols and through them a way to express myself productively. Started my own punk band just to play the Pistols and the Furs. I only did vocals then, but I'm learning guitar now. I will be spending a lot of time with this video to learn from you, Dagan. What a wonderful contribution to RU-vid. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks again!
The finest thing Steve did post Sex Pistol’s was the Neurotic Outsiders with Duff Mckagan, Matt Sorum and John Taylor from Duran Duran in my opinion. Well worth checking out! It definitely has a Pistols/Professionals vibe about it. Sadly like the Pistols he only made one proper album.
Damn!! Holy damn!! I watched half way through and had to go straight to my bedroom and plug into my Marshall with the 4x12 with my Epiphone Sheraton 2009 and damn I loved every minute playing those power chord riffs!! I can see how much Steve jones inspired many punk/pop punk guitarists… Les Paul Custom was always my dream guitar growing up in alpine white and a Marshall.. Dude thank you for inspiring me to play because I’ve been down in a rut for a few weeks and watching you has brought me back!!
You've pretty much nailed the sound mate! Brilliant review as always! I have the same white Epiphone LP custom and agree it's a superb looking and playing guitar, actually I prefer it to my Gibson LP Standard 120th Anniversary model.
It should be said that while I'm not from the UK, I always watch your videos. Dagan always looks like he's having a blast while so many people making videos look like they are bored out of their mind. You all at PMT need to make sure another company doesn't try to gobble him up.
There was a Bigsby on the LPC originally. It was removed & the one sticker covered the holes. There are picks of Syl playing it before Malcom got it & gave it to Steve. Steve had a sunburst LPC w/ a Bigsby & he hated it. But anyway. Nice playing sounds cool. During the '96 tour he was using the JCM 800's & a Danelectro Daddy 'O' for a Boost. Great pedal! Thanks for the post!!
Hi from downunder, I was a punk in the 80s and a huge Pistols fan. I died my hair like Sids, amongst others but I heard that Steve Jones 'nicked' the Les Paul from a Bob Marley gig and striped it and put the pin up girls on it to help disguise it. The bass work was already done by Glenn Matlock before Sid joined the band. I was a big Sid fan but he was no musician. 🧷 🤘
Awesome! Yeah there’s pictures of Syl Sylvain in the New York Dolls with the guitar before the Pistols, when Malcolm McLaren used to manage them, there’s a lot of mystery around it but that’s the definitive history! Haha. Also the producers have confirmed that it was all Jonesy on bass, Glen helped write a few songs though. 👌
Actually most of the bass was re-recorded by Steve. If you listen to “Spunk”, the demo album released before Bollocks, the bass playing is way more busy (awesome actually), and That was Matlock
Thank u for taking the time to respond to my comments. The story I heard about his Les Paul sounds like Steve, taking the piss. Like your videos too, cheers. 🤘
Dude when you put silly thing in the intro I was thrilled 😂 I love the Sex Pistols and Steve Jones is one of my favorite guitarists. His story and how he came to play guitar is the reason why I started learning in the first place. And he came up with some pretty bad ass riffs and I love his little fill ins on the album
Thanks really interesting video tons of stuff I didn’t know the fender Amps definitely have that right sound 👍 might have to crank mine up later The Marshall is away to distorted and squishy and artificial sounding
1. Its SYLVAIN SYLVAIN. 2. YES it had a Bigsby put on by Syl, who took it off. 3. Both the '57 and the Custom were used on the album, its just that a photographer was there for one session when the' 57 was used. 4. Jones only used an SG on the 1978 NO ONE IS INNOCENT / BELSEN VOSSA GASSA session in Rio with Ronnie Biggs. 5. The original Joned guitar is in rough shape, the stickers have peeled off, and the holes where the Bigsby was mounted are exposed.
@@mjh5437 it is in Hawaii..... A woman has it. It is in bad shape. Heavily yellowed, the decals came off long ago and the shapes where they used to be can be seen. She offered it to Jones a few years ago for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but seeing the state of it, he wasnt interested.
Saw them on the Filthy Lucre Tour in '96 in Dallas. They were beyond great. Steve played what I'm sure was a copy of the pin-up girls Custom and a blue sparkle LP Custom. Also saw him well before play a New Years Eve show in LA at the Palladium in '89 after Fire and Gasoline came out, he played the pin-up girls Custom. He had really long hair but I think he was clean by then and again was great. I still have a '77 white (yellowed) LP Custom I bought used many years ago, Jones is the reason I bought it. I have never owned a Fender but I should get a Twin Reverb. I've thought about it before because of Bollocks (I thought it was stolen at a Faces show) and hearing you play the songs through one it's clearly the best sound. Great video. Never knew you were such a huge Pistols fan.
Dagan I'm from that era. Hard core punk 77. You've nailed it my son. Satellite....my favourite. PS the studio twin he used was moded For more mids. Dont ask me how. The Marshall's he used at Brixton were the CULT,S. and modified. Whilst owned by the Cult. He tuned down.... DONT FORGET THE PROFESSIONALS.. Just another dream.. 123 Action man... White light.. Ect.. Last word.. Dimond Head. Was formed After watching The pistols on tv.....what a legacy.
I love Epiphone guitars, and usually argue that they are absolutely close to the sound of Gibson, but Steve Jones (my favorite guitar player of all time) didn't play guitar, he played tone, and his tone is so specific that the Epiphone just can't reproduce it. Great video. And btw, there's a black p90 Epiphone Les Paul behind you.
The main difference is pickups in this case to Epiphone. Their probuckers are ever bit of a paf recreation as burst buckers. The Steve Jones Les Paul has 490T and 490R which are very different and more high output than the mid output paf style of the probuckers and burst buckers. The p90 in the background is a signature JJN old glory.
Nailed it. I've been a Sex Pistols fanatic for 45 years and it's always been mainly about Steve's guitar for me. I'm primarily a bass player but I play some guitar too and the only guy I've ever tried to properly get right is Steve Jones. I've picked up tips and stuff over the years, more recently and watching RU-vid stuff (lots of geezers out there in RU-vid land doing instructional vids and GETTING IT WRONG!) and what you have correctly realised is that what Steve lacked in technical ability he more than made up for in feel. That guy was just obviously in love with the noise he was making! So thanks for the video dude, I've picked up a few more tips from it, mainly with the Anarchy solo which I nearly got right but now, watching you, I reckon I can nail it.
Nice job... You forgot about a critical item to Jonesy sound Fender label orange painted GAUSS 12" speakers that were a custom option $$$ in those years. thanks
1977 ... The queens silver jubilee was a great time indeed. It was also the year Elvis (supposedly) died ,and the year I moved from harmonica to guitar. Peeps we're celebrating in the streets ,and coming together in a huge celebration, then came thatcher ,and messed it all up. I got into punk in 1976/77 ,and haven't looked back since. I was there ,and still am. I also have the new York dolls first album too m8 ,not to mention all the pistols records too ,even though they became everything they were against... (commercialism etc). So thanx for dragging up memories. Being a Geordie ,You need to check the toy dolls ,and try sum of olgas solos m8. Sum of them are tricky ,like we quit the cavalry !!!. Anyhoo ,I'm glad you hit a subject close to my heart ,and fondest regards to all back home in uk. (I moved to usa 21 years ago).
In his autobiography Andy Blade of the band Eater says that Steve Jones'¹ early Les Paul was bought by Eaters guitarist Brian Chevette. This is the one used by Jones in 1975/76.
I have a white custom Epi Les Paul bought it in homage to Excalibur I have often thought about changing the pickups for some black P90s and getting the pin up stickers. and yep it was Steve Jones who inspired me to pick up the guitar. I know Gibson did a limited edition custom but I would pee my pants if Epiphone did a tribute guitar they have obviously done a few lately and I have the Noel Gallagher Riviera. I have a Marshall Code amp and that has JCM800 pre set so going to try it with my Les Paul
This young fellow is perpetuating the White L.P. Custom myth. The Jones sound is NOT all about the Custom. He had several guitars (I think he may have used some of these for "Bollocks" overdubs). In old footage and photos you can clearly see him using other guitars: Flying V, Explorer, even an S.G. Stop this mythologizing!
Back when guitars were tools of the trade and had bumps and stickers, today they are treated like porcelain, kept inside their case in a safe, and oh lord please don't touch my Gibby or my 20k relic guitar, it might get damaged lmfao! Back in the Pistols punk days I wrecked a Gibson SG and a black Gibson Les Paul, I didn't even know what year they were, that's how much I cared =)
Great playing and sound. "Fire and Gasoline" was a great record too. I saw him playing live while he was touring that record. I think he was opening for The Cult. I also got to spend a good part of an evening with him at the Cathouse in L.A. I'm pretty sure he only hung out with me cause I had cigarettes and was gushing over his work. We parted ways that night when he noticed a girl seemed very interested in me and he asked me what I was doing hanging out with him when I could be hanging out with her. I took his advice but- in all honesty I would have rather hung out with him.
Nice one, Dagan!! I turned 10 in 1977 and the Sex Pistols, the Buzzcocks and the Clash ruled my world!! My Dad worked at a TV/Radio station at the time and the older DJ's couldn't stand Punk so I was the inheritor of all that distorted goodness!! Soon Siouxsie and the Banshees entered my collection which by the time I was 13 in 1980 included Bauhaus, XTC and the Cure and well I guess you can see the trajectory I was on. Thanks again Mate, that was Fantastic!!
