The ULTIMATE Stop Block for a Miter Saw

A stop block should provide accurate cuts every single time. My old stop block was a complete failure. It moved too easily every time a board bumped it. I wanted to add a stop block to my miter station that was solid and accurate. I purchased the Woodpecker Stealth Stop for my miter stand. Spread the word! Dealing in fractions is unnecessarily difficult, error prone and slow. I gave up fighting it as a woodworker. 😢 I love math and am very good at it…but dealing in tedious fractions when there’s a better system is just 😖

This is a good looking system. Woodpeckers is always a little high, but you can be assured that you get a quality product when you order from them. This system is a bit pricey, but probably within reach for the average weekend warrior if he saves his money from recycling combined with money that he gets from Santa or begs his wife for. Thanks for the video.

I have that small teflon stop block and it works fine for me. There is a small lip on the bottom side that is supposed to sit in the t-track slot (not across it like you have it). It needs to be rotated 90° from how you have it situated in order to work properly. This small lip lining up inside the t-track helps secure it better. It's definitely not as high-tech/nice as the stealth stop system, but does OK in my shop.

I was continually having issues with it. Maybe I got a dud? Also there's no way to square it up to the measurement to ensure accurate cuts either (which I failed to mention in the video). You could use a square or something, then tighten it down. But when you bump one corner, it's out of square. It just hasn't worked well for me.

@@731Woodworks You're right, it's far from a perfect solution. I guess part of it is that I rarely use my miter saw for "final" cuts . Usually do those at the table saw, so I don't need the level of accuracy you're talking about. Either way, always appreciate the information you put out! Keep it up.

I built a nice table in my shop for my miter saw. When it comes to the measuring tape, I did not put one down but just my tape on my side always. When I am cutting anything repeated, I have a zero clearance insert and. still use my retract measuring tape to set the stop. Another thing I did was not line of the fence with the saw fence but set it back 1/8 of an inch to allow for lumber that is warped. I take my time and use the aluminum fence on the saw to square it up. JS
@csimet
@csimet 2 года назад
Those fold-down stop blocks are nice. I use a beefy block that stays put with a large handle and overlaps the tape for easy reference. My station has 8' of table on both sides and I build a pair of easy to remove L-shaped 4' fences (3/4" plywood)... mainly so I can use the counter tops for other tasks or chop crooked lumber. They attach with a few 1/4-20 star knobs with just a tad of wiggle room via over sized holes in the fence. Allows me to adjust it slightly and perfectly parallel with the miter saw. A t-track runs the entire length with an imbedded Fastcap tape along its entire length directly in front of the track. Tip when making lots of repeat cuts and you worry about the block moving... lock down another block behind it or use that Rockler t-track clamp. Twice the clamp pressure.

I am working on installing the SAME fence system to my new miter station. Thanks for the tip on opening up the stop blocks before installing. I agree that flush mount only is the best approach. I incorporated my drill press into one side as well. I also used a trick of using 4 large bolts to mount the saw portion of the table so I can precisely dial in the saw height with the 2 side tables.

I live in Lagos Nigeria and shopping on amazon is a huge problem because of delivery. As such, I have had to inprovise and design many of the tools I use myself. Now, I came up with a stop block system that works for me and has drastically improved my workflow and efficiency. When I saw this system that you have installed, it got me thinking...and thinking. When I saw how much the woodpecker system cost, it made me jump. I have solved these problems in my workshop and for less than 20 bucks (retail). I think my solution is very marketable but I have no idea how to go about monetising it. I've not shared it with anybody yet, but If you think it may be something that interests you, let's explore.
@nickbrutanna9973

Lequse -- I will suggest to you that almost certainly Woodpeckers has patented what they've done, so, make sure you check with a patent attorney before attempting to sell any similar ideas. Personally, I think Woodpeckers does some great stuff but they tend a lot towards gouging for everything, which puts me off using them even though I can afford it. These appear to be injection molded plastic, yet WP wants US$40 for a pair of them. I might see that price if they were aluminum, but not for plastic. For 40 bucks you should get 6, not 2, in plastic. Sure, they came up with them, so they get to ask what they want, but I'm not paying that... not for plastic. To each their own. 😉

@@nickbrutanna9973 Thanks for this response, at least now I'm conversing with someone. So here are my responses to you. Firstly, what I have come up with is significantly different from the woodpeckers version. It may solve the same (or some of the same) problems, but that is where the similarities end. It neither looks like nor works like the WP version and I am robustly confident that no intellectual property would be infringened. Secondly, what I'm currently using is an all metal construction and wow, it works spot on. I've just finished a project with 1004 halflap joints and ALL came out perfect. I'm sure there is a gap (pun intended) in the market for this product, just need to figure out how to reach it. Thanks for the comment and if you know someone or something, let's talk! Furthermore, my gizmo actually happens to look like it was made by woodpeckers and it would theoretically slot into their range of products quite seamlessly. Like they have different types of squares and rules, this could be just another stopblock system!

I installed this same system, flat like you did, a couple of months ago in my new miter saw station. Absolutely love this track and stop blocks. Very accurate every time I've used them. The fold down of the stop is a real game changer. You can put it down and square one end, put it up and cut to your final length. Very easy and repeatable. As for the clamping side a 1/4" bolt will also work for your hold downs. That's my only complaint is that I wish they would have made it fit with the normal t-track hold downs.

With the flush mount track,you can make a small backboard for a horizontal frame for long boards. Just like the horizontal fence on your miter saw. I have an overhang on my bench that I use to clamp it wherever I need it.

I like the system from Wood Peckers and it’s the system I will use when I redo my miter station this year. I don’t like the need for a driver either. Hopefully at some point Wood Peckers will design a little flush mount latch that just flips up and down and latches it in place.

The cabinet shop I used to work for had "Blum ruler swivel stops" on their hinge boring machine it was my favorite, you set common offsets and don't have to ever touch them again because they swing out of the way when you put your material against the front of them or act as a stop when you push against their side. They cost a lot though, I was thinking of machining my own personal ones it's a simple design.

I finally got around to looking into this because I am designing a miter saw station. I saw Woodpeckers offers an inch only or a metric only tape in both left or right orientation. It looked like if you buy the kit you can only get the combo left or combo right tape. Maybe if you contacted Woodpeckers you could special order with your preferred tape. I am going to do a full 12 foot on each wing so I may just buy the parts I need instead of going with the kit.

In a situation like this, wood glue will wet the fiberboard and cause it to expand. A better choice would have been contact cement, which is traditionally used for countertops. It will not cause it to expand or bump up.

You were using the old stop blocks wrong. You should have rotated them 90° so that the block's tenon fit in the track groove. The way you set it up, only a tiny portion of the block bears on the track and it was not enough to keep it from slipping.

The only good thing about this system is that you can set 2 sizes that are near each other. I use kreg, and the only bad thing about it is that you have about 8-9 cm between 2 stops. So you cant set for example 70 and 72 cm, the nearest possible to 70 is 78. But if we talk about this one - you have to use 2 different tool to set it. I think its very uncomfortable to use.

How do you plan on cutting anything less than 14 inches. The stop block will not work. I love the comment at 7:42 about a less lazy guy would rebuild it. If you wanted to build it differently where the track is going the "wrong way" and adjust it accordingly to your saw, it would put the inches side of the tape on the closer side to the block.. Be nice if the whole part of the block was aluminum. If you wanted 2 blocks closer than the 2" or so that each takes, you could run a secondary track in front of the first one potentially.

Just the tape that comes with it. Right to Left tape or Left to Right Tape

Right! Let's spend $237 for a WoodPecker system with plastic stops when all you really needed was a little bigger knob for more leverage to tighten down the stop you had, or a block of wood.

This is the dumbest fence stop system i have ever seen. Woodpeckers worst product right here.

Do you have it? Used it? If not, you don't have any real opinion on it other than you don't like the looks of it.

@@731Woodworks Hell no i dont have this but I absolutely do have a professional opinion on it. If you care about your time this is not the stop for you. Think FLIP stop! NOT with MY finger!

When I clicked on the Amazon link, it took me to a $250 package. I definitely cringed. But, after you mentioned the price, I hit the Woodpeckers link and saw the options. $129 is not a bad price for something that you will use over and over again.

Little pricey for a track and not a fan of having to use an allen wrench to tighten it down every time... I am sure it works nicely for others, just not my cup of tea....
