“Long live the King!” The biggest presence in rugby league ever. I remember shaking the Kings hand in the Leeds supporters club bar and couldn’t let go of his hand. Walter James Lewis’s biggest uk fan.👍👏👏👏😀
The man was simply the greatest. As good as Andrew Johns was, he didn't even come close to this brilliant Rugby League player Wally Lewis. I suppose I was in the generation to see the great man play during my 8-year career. Thanks for the upload and kind regards.
Yes Johnno!! We were lucky to have seen King Wally during his prime. Watching him control Origins, Tests and GFs in person at Lang Park in the 80s was truly a unique experience I am grateful for 🙂👍🏻🏉
What a great documentary on Wally Lewis. And that’s amazing to say as I come from NSW. Regardless of what side he was on he sure could play Rugby League
The broncos first home game at Lang Park my wife who hated rugby league provided some entertainment in the form of trick riding before the game and again at half time. I had a battle to get my wife to stay and watch the 2nd half. We stayed and pretty soon Wally's got the ball broke a tackle then broke another tackle next thing me missus is on her feet jumping up and down screaming go Wally' go Wally' .he made a believer out of her eh
Great vid mate. The 84 GF was one of my greatest football memories during that time. I was originally an East supporter until DJ Morris went to Wynnum in 81 and then went onto win Wynnums first Flag as coach. I will also mention there was one game that was not mentioned here, but also never played. It was agame players and fans and qrl officials wanted to see except the nsw hierarchy. [I think they knew what was coming] The game was to be the winners of the 84 nsw and brl respective premiers. Wynnum v Canterbury. They did a computer simulation of the game once they realised it wasn't going ahead. They even had John Mckoy calling the game. Wynnum won that game 32-28. Another victory for the king without even being on the field. Ironically the 1st State championship game played between Northern Pride and Penrith in 2014 was won by Norther P 32-28. A bit of trivia there for you.
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes I do remember the computer simulation game with John McCoy calling the game on radio. I will be doing a video in the future about what may have happened if the Wynumm vs Canterbury game went ahead. Cheers.
Proud son moment...My parents got to ride the team bus with Qld that year 1984 to the game, and have breakfast with the team, Mum is now 80 and still loves her footy... started burleigh bears juniors at pizzey park, goid coast junior, board life member sth qld boards spanning over 25yrs, 1st Australian woman to get an OAM for sports administration, ..a very good judge of a player, knows the rules and can talk footy...her all time favourite best is by far Wally Lewis and she couldnt believe how good Artie was at eating pies !!
Thank you so much Merida! I really appreciate it mate. Be sure to subscribe to my channel as I have countless more vintage Rugby League and Sports videos from my VHS archives being uploaded every day. Cheers champion and take care👍🏻🙂
Thanks so much mate! I really appreciate the positive comment👌🏻🙂 Yes, certainly I am currently producing several documentary's right now ready for release over the next few weeks, along with many rare full games and original music👍🏻🏉🎵🏀 Cheers mate
Yes you are correct. I was fortunate to see Wally play most weekends and Origins and Tests in the 80s and early 90s...watching this man direct his team around the paddock and read the play 2-3 tackles ahead of time...I've never seen a player control big games as he could.
@@christopherdale8201 There have been many great players from both codes. There were better midfield players in Union than Tim Horan. Daniel Gerber was better as he was stronger, faster and more dynamic. Jonah Lomu on the wing could do things on the field ,no other player in the history of both codes could do. There were players with better running skills than Wally Lewis but the brain power he had in the understanding of his code was simply unmatched. He was a dominant figure in State of Origin for 11 years . Lomu was the greatest player, but Wally was the smartest and a better all rounder.
@@brettwilkinson9529 agree on everything but Danny Gerber been better than Tim Horan no way Tim Horan single handedly won the world cup for the Wallabies in 91 & 99 in the semi final against the All Blacks and particularly when he came off his Sick bed to win the game in 99 against the springboks and everytime he played against Danny Gerber he ran rings around him and I witnessed that in 92 at Cape town and again in 93 QLD vs Western Province at Ballymore and again when the Springboks toured Australia in 93,Danny Gerber was good in the 80's on what tests he could get that I saw but by the early 90's his time had passed.
The greatest ever, in either code. Other players have been special in their positions, but Lewis could do it all. He could run like an outside back, or go physical like a front rower. Or, when he chose to do so, he could play the game stood still.
Yep, I agree Willie. I saw Wally play live in Brisbane on many a weekend and Origin and Test matches through the 80s. He's the greatest I've seen and I've watched em all since
There have been some great NSW players but I don't count Ray Price among them. He talks about Lewis being a "show pony"! How often did Price appeared to be extremely concussed in games then miraculously appear to have "risen from the dead"? Thanks again mate for a great video.
Ray has terrible CRT nowadays, he certainly wasnt joking. And yes I did like Wally the player but christ he used to flop about trying to con the refs, sometimes it worked other times it put huge pressure in his p.layers to make up the missing person in defence. No idea why except to make himself the centre of attention
Thanks so much Holly. I greatly appreciate your wonderful comment👍🏻🙂 Glad you liked the video and I'll be sure to produce many more documentary's in the next few weeks. Cheers 👌🏻
Like many others who have commented on here, I'm trying to think of a NSW player has even come close to these achievements. The commentators always plaster on when a NSW player has a good season but it is just one good season but Wally played 5/8th for yrs never had to play out of position very often
@@craignielson6605 Yes sir. I hear you. That whole situation could have easily been handled better and with more respect from those you mentioned towards Wally.
Thanks so much mate for your kind and encouraging comment. I really appreciate it. Great question bud...I did have the tape of the Combined Brisbane vs Parramatta game and ......uuugh!! I lost it around 3-4 years ago......if I ever find it in my extensive VHS archives again I will post it immediately for sure. I'm going to start digging for it👍🏻
Yes certainly he was the greatest especially in 1984. Just to list these achievements overlapping 83-85 his tour with QLD to the UK and Wakefield, his premiership with Wynnum and his wins with Combined Brisbane and win over the Bulldogs to prove that the Brisbane clubs could match it with the best of the Sydney clubs. Win the State of Origin 5 years in a row To top it off the captaincy of the Kangaroos and to beat the Lions 3-nil and 2-1 over the Kiwi's and the Golden boot award and yet that's why the NSW players Coaches public hated him because he was the greatest player since Churchill and Daly Messenger and no one had done that since Artie Beeston. Since then only Langer, Lockyer, Thurston has done that. PS notice a NSW player hasn't achieved any of that. Iam sorry if that sounds disrespectful after all the crap they have dumped on QLD Rugby league especially when it has come to kangaroo selection when QLD had won the series and the amount NSW players that got selected to go on Kangaroo tours I thought that was a joke because NSW Selectors and basis administrations. But well done to the One and Only King Wally Lewis and the QLD players of that era of the early to mid 80's
