The Ultimate Weapon Tier List - Monster Hunter Rise Best Weapons To Use 

Hello everyone, this tier list is aimed at both newcomers as well as Sunbreak hunter as Rise is coming out on consoles later this month. I also added my own personal opinions on each of the weapons into consideration for the Tier List, thus how fun / satisfying a weapon is (for me) is going to affect its rating. There's going to be some disagreements so let me know what you would change on the list 😁

I want to add for new players... All tier lists are for speed runs and how fast you can complete them. Every weapon is viable and strong in their own unique way, i.e your not going to want duel blades for tanking hits. Pick the weapon that suits your playstyle You want to play capcoms version of Bloodborne? Switch axe/charge blade. you like K.Oing monsters day in day out? Then hammer or hunting horn is a great option. You like tanking? Lance/gunlance and sword and shield... Damage with huge hit box? Long sword. You want to be a mosquito and flying around dealing lots of Damage? Insect glaive or daggers! You want to play shotgun and apply status effects like paralysis/sleep/poison ect.... bow. You want to mow down the monster with a hail of bullets explosives and status effects? The light/heavy bowgun have you covered. The real trick is finding what you enjoy with so many options and playstyles, go to your full screen map and travel to to training arena go in the item box and equipment and find what works for you if you feel you'll like the weapon watch a 2 minute beginners guide and test it out on a hunt as a further test. All that matters is your having fun!

Not a hammer main but I will say going from world to rise, hammer feels so dam good in this game with it's gap closers armored moves, and the biggest change to me, the ability to keep power charge after being knocked down. In rise it feels like hammer does exactly what it's supposed to, compared to world, where it felt like an incomplete weapon.

Greatsword is S/S , as long as you hit 100% of your charged swings. Which won't happen.

26:46 wanted to mention: the aerial aim silkbind was in base rise and not added in sunbreak. The silkbind that sunbreak _actually added_ is butcher's bind; possibly the most underwhelming silkbind attack in the entire game lol.

Quick thing on Lance: Skyward Thrust can be the highest DPS move on lance depending on what monster you are fighting. The key is to get at least 3 ticks of damage on the way down. Larger/taller/flying monsters, such as Gaismagorm/Ceanataur/Kushala Daora are where this move really shines. My recommendation is to have skyward thrust on one scroll, and anchor rage on the other, then just pick which scroll you use based on your target monster. Also it’s really fun and satisfying.

*Fun Fact:* Elemental Burst Counter can parry everything. *EVERYTHING.* Valstrax's ambush? Parried. Gaismagorm's nova? Parried. Lucent Nargacuga's force slam? Parried. Flaming Espinas' charge burst? Parried. There is *NOTHING* it cannot counter.

Every weapon is S tier. You guys are all awesome.

I feel like a list like this can end up deterring people from trying what interests them. So to all hunters PLEASE use what YOU like. Try everything, see what you can do with it. And most importantly have fun!

Bowguns heavy and light have some of the fastest kills in monster hunter games with the great sword and bow being the only things that tend to beat it. Not always but still vary often

Mained GL for world and rise. So glad it's in a good place. Right now I'm trying to learn switch axe. Missing some of thr defense but it's very good!

I became hammer main in rise and now in sunbreak I really hope Devs will buff it.

Swaxe attack and movement options creates so much dps potential. If your in the zone with it the target monster's icon will start blinking blue before you know.

As a long time Hunting Horn main I 1000% agree with your take on the Rise/SB version. I absolutely love it in Rise/SB, you can go ham on a monster with almost hilarious consistency and it’s really flashy too!! That being said I still much prefer the World/IB HH. There was just something about how methodical and precise you had to be with it, defo felt more impactful and hence also much more satisfying. I’m hoping for the next HH in the next MH game that they go back to more World/IB than Rise/SB.

If played right...I don't have a single weapon I don't like. But personal...Hammer ist still my favourite. The new charge lv3 attack while moving is so fun to use that I feel like something is missing when I play older games.

Ive just started playing Rise, and as a hammer main, i can feel the difference. Something just feels off, the silkbinds are great for the mobility but the hammer overall feels less impactful. May try some other weapons out, switch axe looks cool or i may try GS.

For all its drawbacks, GL will always be my go to weapon, but you are spot on with some of its issues lol. I do miss my wyrmstake blast from world though.

These buffs to weapons, do you only get them if you have sunbreak or are they also applied to the base game Rise? So if I don't have sunbreak, are the changes shown here also in rise?

l'm a HBG main myself, found my play style in MHW when l got to Iceborne. l'm technically a Tank, haha, high def and high survivalibity (with shield + tune-up ofc) in exchange to having a bit lower dmg, though... l think the max l did was around 120 per tick (4-5 times) with Ice Pierce round. l love the "turning into a Heavy Machinegun" aspect, that with Pierce 3 rounds and you see LOTS of numbers haha. Also, since l'm using they Royal HBG series, l have healing rounds too, so at higher Anomaly missions (only at lv.118 atm), l can also keep the team alive if they take a lot of dmg. And yea, l just love it when we have different weapon users in a hunt, all having their perks on the field, knocking the monsters over, cutting their tail (l have no slicing round sadly) and such.

HH main here, I’m excited to try out these new moves it has to offer :)

Over the years they've really made SnS more fun to play, with world and rise they pretty much solidified it as the main weapon i use here on out

My best friend is a hunting horn main since his first game which was world ( I've played since freedom unite) and not gonna lie it feels great having near constant buffs

Its crazy how different everyones tierlist in this game is. Ive been on a tierlist watching spree and so far the only weapon I consistently see in S tier is GreatSword.

How did you play frontier? I heard it was closed ... i want to try it because i started at 3u on wiiu so if this is possible to play game that were release before it could be cool

Hey , so I'm comming back to mh rise and I didn't even know it had a new expansion. If I don't have sunbreak , can I still play the game the same ? Will it affect the coop? Can I use the new skills w my dual blades?

I really disagree about hammer: the duality between the courage and bravery playstyle offers a great deal of options, not to mention rise gave hammer a counter. It's moveset changes gave it plenty of evasive options which makes it surprisingly safe to use.

I got Mghu for sale i have played for 7 hours but it's quite complicated , not saying it won't be enjoyable but i feel like i can't really play when i have just a bit of free time and i'm scared it will be long before i start enjoying it Would buying rise be a bad move as it seems more hack and slash and easy to play what do you guys think? Both games look Fun but i'm new to MH and MHGU seems pretty hard

I honestly rarely see really good insect glaive players that utilizes it’s mobility in the air and on the ground. I admit insect glaive is hard to play in the beginning due to some micromanaging (essence gathering, aerial vs ground combat, aerial charging, kinsect management, camera control, etc. I think this is why IG is usually considered a low tier weapon other than it’s not the hardest hitting melee in the game. But one major thing I like about glaive is that it still becomes very efficient with basic skills such as attack boosts, and wexes. No real need to get fancy like rapid morphing, quick sheathing, rapid ups, etc.

dang I used to enjoy so much the slide reload in my sticky lbg, I guess I'll have to stick with my A tier weapons once rise comes out on xbox..

even if it’s just the training area, seeing him have pizza cutter active but not actually using it from 16:40 onwards hurts every fibre of my soul

Greatsword was always a great starting weapon for new players getting used to aiming and flow of the battles of the game. When I got on MHR and learned you can just skip to your crazy heavy charge blow using your shoulder attack I knew it was busted. It's hard to go back though after using the hammer and switch axe 😭

The OG MH on PS2 will always have the best nonexistent combos

Lance has the Arzuros ass slap with the Cross Counter slash and i just cannot get over its sound effect. I love it

I never ever play the archer class in games. For some reason, I can't get enough of the bow in this game.

I’d love to use an axe weapon but I’m not a fan of switching between that and sword and having to build up or maintain gauges

I love the bowgun. Strafe around while my friend goes ham with the longsword

Seeing how this is my first MH and I'm maining hammer on PS5 and absolutely bonking 3 star quests, I find the game easy. Might pick up the charge blade next

Basically fully agree besides with how you made weapons that only really thrive with element in comparison to the others seem good to pick up as a new player, because a new player probably won't even care for Hitzones and farming for one of each element besides noticing numbers as they pop up I think that assuming each weapon was raw would have been better for the list because then it would be a smoother journey for them assuming they took your advice at face value

Fun Gunlance built: U know how gunlance eat sharpness like crazy. Well no more with the honeblade + evade extender + evade window( and adrenline rush if u lucky with quiro craft ). Now u got a eazy to manitain max sharpness level and high damage hit. (Ps: this built is really fun to use and can dish out tons of damage too but a bit hard to use )

This is more of personal opinion than fact. Weapons of the same type can be played vastly different. Raw pure charge axe with slugger build is much different than Elemental discharge spam build or charged sword mode build.

From a IG main in world/iceborne to rise/sunbreak, Monster hit you More in the air in this new game. The hit boxes are horrible on the monsters now!! for many weapons! hell they even knock you off ledges no matter how high up your are!

I enjoy your commentary on the weapons but you should've just dropped the rating system entirely. It's pointless when you give every weapon pretty much an A rank. Seems like you were afraid of really critizing any weapon that weren't as fun or good. I know you'd get some hate from some players, but I think you should give some more personality to your commentary. It'd be nice to get more of your personal opinions rather than just the facts about the weapons

hello, isn't the Bowguns too expensive to maintain? Like you have to farm for bullets before hunting?

So is playstation rise gonna have all the title updates leading up to sunbreak's release or is just vanilla game?

As a MHW:Iceborne Gunlancer, it is quite nice to see the gunlance get a fair bit of extra love.

My weapons used list : 2 hunts with a bow, 1 hunt with light bow gun, 4 hunts with hunting horn, 563 hunts with insect glaive. Don't know whether to be embarrassed or proud

Will The sunbreak add on be like Iceborne? Will the weapons from Rise have the new attacks from Sunbreak?

I’m a big GS fan, and I also enjoy the 5th gen GS. But I kinda miss the Crit Draw playstyle, it’s just so weak nowadays. Iceborne kinda patched that with Velkhana y. Oh well, countering is satisfying too.

Played a little bit of world but Rise is really my first monster hunter game. Been playing the charge blade and it was confusing as hell but I think I'm starting to get it which is great. It sucks to hear that it's not amazing in the original game since im playing on gamepass but whatever sunbreak comes out soon.

The new GS stance in sunbreak are so fast and good to use . I love the new GS on sunbreak with the new 3 light move feel so fast and powerfull . I wait for sunbreak on xbox now allready grind on steam where i need to go back for v4.0 And god the new HH aka the windblowmaker for me so tasty . HH im happy to see the main HH get a lot of change from rise and sunbreak no stand still crap management for good buff .

I’m glad the wiggle helmet in the game need to get that to flex on all the npc.

Gunlance kit in MHR is awesome. But the way its dmg is calculated, or just its mechanic in general is just banana. I wish it had a shell modification similar to bowguns. Also (lance main) HOW COULD YOU!!??

So when rise come to ps4 and Xbox will the buff to element still be there or we will have to wait for Sunbreak DLC?

I found insect glasses kinda lacking in Rise/Sunbreak. In world it was The mounter weapon. Amd I felt it also played a lot smoother. But now in rise mounting doesn't require aerial attacks, so the main role of glaive in world was lost. I loved the weapon in world but for whatever reason I just can't get back to where I enjoyed it playing rise.

"Controversial", called like that by people who don't know how to counter even the weapon gives you enough time and space. It's versatile, fast and awesome to use as LBG and DB

Ever since MH4U and MHGU the swagaxe has been my baby. It’s always been the most fun to play for me and I love it

Personally I like the dual blades, I like doing fast attacks then dodge,but today I just tried out the insect glaive and even though it isn’t really my play style it was interesting to use

I mained in MHW/IB and now still main it.

I just started rise...I played a lot of world and pretty much only used daggers insect glaive , bow gun and horn

man I played monster hunter unite on the psp, this new games looks easy compared to what I had to suffer back in the day!

Insect glaive main here just wanted to say that the glaive will propyl never get the love it deserves. For those how use it like me not a lot of people know that it has healing billet in to the kit with your kinsect. Get a strike with your kinsect and on contact use the sillkbind that makes you jump back it will call the kinsect back to you and if it hits your target wen you call it there will be a nice chunk of health for you wen it gets back. comes in clutch often in late game.

I just started MHR on Xbox so far The HBG is my favorite but the really want to like the gunlance I’m just very horrible with it.

I thoroughly miss the old hunting horn, it almost killed the game for me when I first played it because I was planning to run through the game with it, I ran with GS instead but it always makes me sad that I can’t use og hunting horn in this game

I’m a year late but my two main weapons in rise are hammer and hbg and I’m struggling late sunbreak (hr 10)😞

I'm a fan of the LBG, currently making a pierce build that'll shred through armor like butter and dish out tons of damage

My first weapon I ever used was the hammer in mh3 because I was a little kid just picking the biggest damage then very quickly switched to the great sword that being my current most comfortable weapon
