The Afro-Brazilian Umbanda and Candomblé folk religions stem from the Yoruban religion brought to Brazil by the West African slaves in the 16th century. The beliefs and practices are combined with elements from Catholicism and South American Indigenous beliefs making this a truly unique Brazilian folk religion.
The practice of "African cults," as they were prejudiciously labelled, was illegal in Brazil until 1889 - but despite the legal freedom of practice since then, the number of followers continues to dwindle - much competed by Roman Catholicism and Christian Protestantism.
In this documentary, we get a unique insight into the complex belief system of the Umbanda religion; following the rituals and mediums on close hand while visiting the impressive and colourful festivals taking place each year.
The documentary series “Disappearing World” was originally broadcasted between 1970-1975.
As an anthropological landmark of its time, the series tells the story of traditional communities endangered by the modern world’s progressions.
The series stands as a historical document of daily life in remote and threatened societies, such as the Cuiva, Embera and Panare Indians of Colombia, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara, the Kurdish Dervishes and the Meo of China.

This was basically my childhood, Brazil in the 70s, my grandmother a medium who healed many people and who guides me still despite having passed over.

Yes, of course, you can participate in the open "sessions" to receive healing and guidance from the guides. And when you feel it you can ask to the Pae de Santo to be initiated into the cult, and perhaps become a medium.

@@Lasalamancahey man I have a couple questions about Umbanda if you don't mind because I'm studying this for it to be my 3rd religion. Isn't the point of Umbanda like Redemption - think about it. You don't have to do animal sacrifices , you have readings , I think witchcraft but only to a certain extent (sympathetic magic , somewhat of sorta like a zombie but it's like some sort of puppet I'm assuming , love spells , revenge spells , and the powder in my main religion) it's showing what's going on in the video. But is it true that Umbandistas have more or less magic than us vodouists. Does Umbanda teach the existence of heaven and hell? How many aspects of Eshu are there
@Freakyy.
@Freakyy. 3 месяца назад
@@MatthewSmith-ik8wc there are countless different umbanda rituals... in fact, animal sacrifice is part of some of them. besides that, some rituals don't consider any readings as relevant to themselves, and carry out a strong oral tradition. one thing is certain about all rituals, though: we don't agree with the catholic church's manichaean philosophy, and thus heaver and hell are not part of our beliefs. instead, we believe spirits inhabit can other realms that reflect their current vibration state, and they are in a constant evolutionary process

Because of the fact that I'm training myself to become an Umbandista i love syncretizing my main religion with roman catholicism I'll be seeing how you can syncretize Umbanda with Roman Catholicism. So far from I've been reading online and assuming you can syncretize your Umbanda beliefs with roman catholicism but I don't think that's often the case. I'll keep studying and training myself to become an Umbandista but from what I know Umbanda has influences of Islam Roman Catholicism Indigenous people religions Spiritism and Animism. I can say without an absolute doubt that this will be my third religion. This beautifully amazing and enigmatic religion has captured my heart in such ways. I feel absolutely sorry for people who disrespect and/or hurt people who practice this religion. People hate what they don't understand because umbanda has magic and magical rituals in it. I'll pray to Erzulie Freda that the suffering of Umbandistas will end and that she has people look past their differences especially their religion. May Bondye bless all benevolent Umbandistas because I plan by next month to begin saving up to become initiated into umbanda as a medium

Those where not depiction of the Orishas, but of catholic saints like Saint Barbara (orixa Iansã, eventos climaticos) and Saint George (orixã Ogun, the warrior. Which is fitting, I guess). It's like having different depictions Teiwaz (German), Tyr (Nordic) and Mercury (Roman. At least that is how Ceaser saw it). They didn't really see as completely unrelated entities. And as it is mentioned, Cabocolo, which is supposed to be a indigenous spirit is represented by the image of north American looking Indians. So yeah, syncretism.
