Kumasi, Ghana, is the capital of the Asante region. This is the seat for one of the most powerful kingdoms of West Africa, surviving British colonisation for centuries. The Kumasi central market is one of the largest in Africa and is run and lead by women. In this documentary, we meet the female traders of this important economy.
The documentary series “Disappearing World” was originally broadcasted between 1970-1975.
As an anthropological landmark of its time, the series tells the story of traditional communities endangered by the modern world’s progressions.
The series stands as a historical document of daily life in remote and threatened societies, such as the Cuiva, Embera and Panare Indians of Colombia, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara, the Kurdish Dervishes and the Meo of China.

Wow I’m so privileged to have watched this video in 2023. This documentary is so so heartwarming and has explained a lot. My mum was born in Kumasi and would sell in the market until she got a chance to move moved to London as a teen. I never knew where she got her hard working, hustling spirit from. Now I do. God bless the motherland.

My great Aunt is in this video, she gave birth to 10 children and her oldest daughter turned 100 last year. The Asantes have a great sense of community and they will keep growing strong God willing. My Grandfather her brother fathered 8 children and they all made it past 75 bar 1

I thoroughly enjoyed this and loved hearing all the personal and entrepreneurial stories from these women. Oba was my favourite. I’m sure she’s probably dead, if she is may she rest in perfect peace. She is a strong woman and so are all the others too. It’s beautiful to learn that Asante women have always been enterprising. We really need to empower women and girls more whether or not they are educated. I’m inspired by these women who found a way to make ends meet against all odds. Thank you for teaching me!

in fact, it has reminded me of my late brave mum who was an adwene seller at the adwene late in the Old Central Market. The same culture existed till the market was demolished for its reconstruction. May God put the dead souls to peaceful rest and grant the living long lives.

Ashantis tradition of reason for polygamy was to procreate, defend, expand, and add more men to the standing army. Men sell weapons and bullets in the market. No more polygamy currently.

AS AT SUCH THERE wasn’t any prima facies as sheet of paper to back it up. Yea you are so stupid. Send me your lawyers. Abrupt !

John Amihere you wanted me to say : Western Togoland wasn’t part of Ghana ? Isn’t it ? Yea, you completely lost my point. Lol ! What kind of stupid English you peoples truly understand ? Did you even know the origine of that language ? It was Eʋegbe of Eʋeao mix with Hindi with little German nd local patoi of the Coccnish ( English), Walsh, Scottish. Therefore corrupted language base upon the song. Nothing else with no word in Twi.

1st of all asante queen mother is not the most powerful, she the most respected, also the ashantis are not a typical matrilineal society, it actually isnt even matrilineal, you are succeded by your sisters first son, which isnt the same as what you mean by your typical matrilineal system
@lail-efg_3we
@lail-efg_3we 5 месяцев назад
That's what the point is , they said "matrilineal"not necessarily "matriarchal" two different things. So it is matrilineal as it's 'sisters son' not 'brother's son' which would make it patrilineal.
