Why does nobody ever acknowledge the fact that all of these business get great free publicity just from being on the show. Even though he tricked these well meaning people for our entertainment, he really helped them more than any gimmick ever could
@yltcraxe
@yltcraxe 4 года назад
I Love the show. And I wanna be his friend...but I don't necessarily agree with your statement...in all cases. I think SOME of the businesses end up looking foolish and could face negative results, and that is ethically uncomfortable. Take the pizza place that offers the free pizza if they can't deliver in a few minutes, but turns out it's a tiny pizza. That is hilarious! But if I lived in that town and they tried to trick me like that, I probably would ve angry and never order again...ok...actually I might find it funny and clever...but I think the common customer will just never want to deal with them again. There are probably other similar cases where a person/business could be in worse condition for whatever gimmicky idea they agreed to try. Which is at least partially there own fault, I guess.
@yihaw149

@@yltcraxe True but hey, big risks can come with big rewards or consequences. Depends what type of person you are. I remember listening to Heidi and Frank that morning of the burger store interview. I had never heard of Nathan For You or Nathan Fielder at all. I remember listening to the interview and just being blown away by how stupid the promotion seemed. They had people calling in and saying they were planning on going and just lying to get the $100 and watching Nathan try to respond to that obvious flaw was painful to listen to. At one point Nathan said something like, "Well, I mean you guys probably have like few thousands listeners of this show" and Heidi and Frank said they have millions of listeners and Nathan was basically like "Oh shit..." and I was cracking up. I eventually found the show and I was loving it and then the burger episode came on and I was like, "HOLY SHIT, THAT WAS HIM!" Also, Heidi and Frank do not look at all like I expected.

But the way the information and underlying themes of the series were presented had a good pace, and was simple enough for everyone who watches to understand. It's a useful "next step" for people who like the show without realizing what it represents. Showing people how Nathan is showing them that the world we know isn't always as reliable as we think is a good lesson, and I'm glad the video exists

On the surface it's entertainment, but at the core it's revealing methods of big scams and uber-fake news that are portrayed as genuine to the masses. But in order to see through the haze you have to want to see through it, clearly, reality. Many people cling to their ego rather than admit they've fully bought into the lie(s). All the World's a Stage and the overseers of the media and political arenas are the puppet masters. Nathan's resulting works are both brilliant and revealing.

"Nathan For You" is probably my favorite short form online serial. Nathan Fielder is a genius. This was a frank, thorough and entertaining analysis. As much as I was familiar with the ideas of Baudrillard, I had never applied them to this man's work. Clearly the man is a kind of Gurdjieffian philosopher, I always saw him as a satirical anarchist- somewhere in between Charlie Kaufman, John Oliver and Eric Andre. :P Thanks for peeling his act apart and providing some additional context. I see you have put quite a lot of trouble into making this video. This subject was well worth the trouble IMO. Jesus fucking christ... I only ever watched this show on the Comedy Central RU-vid channel. Since most of the clips on that page are short, and were available online, and appeared in serial form- I felt that was the most reasonable and accurate description to what I experienced. (I never had Comedy Central on cable TV, or Googled this show [before now] and did not like this show enough to download it or buy it.) I was not trying to impress anyone, I rarely comment on any RU-vid video, I just noticed that Full Fat Video has been consistently making nop notch content, despite lacking a base to represent his analytic skills, and felt I should share my feedback, as guys like Nerdwriter have thousand 'first' comments, but more detailed and less flashy videos like this, generally get less love :) Forgive me for my ignorance!

I agree without what you’re saying but I’d argue that the dumb Starbucks prank was actually a lot more authentic than it appears. Nathan is a satirist, he is an artist. Maybe Banksy has his paintings hung in museums but Nathan for You is quite literally a piece of satirical art and if anything you’re video overall proves this point. Aren’t comedy and television forms of art? Can you think of a better example of satire than Nathan for You? I think you’re overall assessment of what Nathan for You is trying to tell it’s viewer is correct and you’ve explained it well but I think when the news speculated that “dumb Starbucks” might be an art project or satire they were actually pretty spot on.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He wasn't just summarising though, what annoyed me the most was the praise he was giving it. As much as a I like for the show to be praised, he was praising it for things that it doesn't do. In what way does the show trick us? The only thing the audience doesn't know is how Nathan is outside of character. Early in the video he says "If they don't believe it's the best burger, they can have their money back" while it literally is written on screen "$100". Then says that the business owners genuinely believe that Nathan's tactics will work, when often they don't believe him and he has to do some crazy scheme to prove to them it's a plausible idea. Then the analysis is just so all over the place drawing weird meanings from things that don't even tie in with clips shown or things he's said. He says that the "contestants" not knowing that they're on a comedy show until it's aired (therefore not getting their reaction when they find out it's a comedy show) makes it more authentic, which it doesn't. I don't think he knew what authentic meant. His whole analysis of the "dumb starbucks" media coverage made no sense. I could break down how almost every sentence he said about the "dumb starbucks" situation was completely wrong but I can't be fucked. I can't watch the whole video because it's so stupid. Basically, there's so many good things to be said about the show and a fair amount to be discussed, but he didn't really touch on any of it and instead made... whatever that video was.

OH. MY. GOD. I just figured Nathan out. Instead of looking for hired actors to do his pranks and scenes to directly achieve his end vision, which could cost money but most importantly, cost authenticity in the interactions, he enlists the help of average joes who cost way less, but by not telling them and constructing a scenario for them to work in, he generates authentic interactions/reactions from these everyday people. Because of the endless amount of people with different experiences and backgrounds, he never runs out of content nor the resources.

This is what Eric Andre does with on the street pranks too... Even with the celebrity interviews, he's tricking the guests into interactions they're not ready for, putting their acting to the test on camera.... Putting their true selves to the test for us to see....

No joke. I was making a bowl of cereal while the end of this video hit and was debating if I should use unsweetened almond milk or full fat oat milk on my cereal. I appreciate your insight because my bowl of cereal recipe turned out great!

im stupid i always thought the owners of the business were in on it a little bit , i mean the poop flavoured ice-cream how could you not be suspicious of that idea ? i thought they were on it more to be on tv and get recognised that way .

Of course the producers want the audience to think the participants are unaware, but it's naive to think they don't know.
@michaeldavis892

I'd usually agree since most shows today are fake, however the reactions shown by the participants seem very genuine. These people are real business owners and not actors, and if they knew it was a comedy show I doubt they would act as awkward and confused as they do. The only exceptions would be the recurring characters like the judge or the lawyer. However even then Nathan sometimes pushes them to the limit, like when the lawyer started to get pissed in the dumb starbucks episode.

This is really wierd... I thought everthing in the show was scripted... I kind of thought of it in terms of The Office (fake documentary, fake reality tv show)

I happened to be in Los Angeles when Dumb Starbucks was operating. They were talking about it on the radio. The reason it was flooded with customers was that they were giving stuff away for free. If you watch the episode, there's even one moment where Nathan mentions giving someone a free coffee.

What I’ve always wondered about NFY is…the business owners must not go along that easy. I feel like he offers them money to just go along with everything for the TV show. And when they say hell no he says oh we’ll pay you to go along with this

just to add here Nathan said in a podcast that he is always uncertain about things and in this internet age you HAVE to be certain about what you think on certain issues either for or against nothing in between he said he is constantly uncertain which the video highlighted this blurry line between what is real and what is not. It makes sense that this subject is what Nathan would base his comedy on

I disagree with you and Boudrillard - just because you can blur the lines, doesn’t mean that the line doesn’t exist. Great video, otherwise.

I, as a general principle, don't take very seriously someone attempting to sum up the views of a philosopher whose name they can't even pronounce properly. Maybe the insanely low barrier to entry for online video essays isn't a universally good thing?
@ds_7
@ds_7 6 лет назад
Athens Horseparty While I disagree with him, I don’t think stooping to ad hominem and excusing yourself from addressing anything he says is going to help anyone. Especially when you aren’t even putting your name to your comment.
@jpm199
@jpm199 5 лет назад
Athens Horseparty Pronouncing names correctly is not something anyone should be concerned about. Literally read the anglacanization (dont really know the word for it, im guessing from my native language) of Baudrillard. Like people do with Schwartzenneger. No one reads it as shvartzanega. More like shuartseneger.
@ds_7
@ds_7 5 лет назад
joaquin I disagree, learning correct pronunciations shows respect to a person and respect to their culture. Inversely, doing the opposite shows the equal amount of disrespect. So I disagree when you say it’s not something that anyone should be concerned about.

What I don't understand is how he gets away with all this shit. Leading someone to believe they've been hired by Shell is fraud. And unlike Dumb Starbucks, which I'm still shocked falls under parody, he didn't change the name or logo at all.
