The design is the biggest factor for me wanting this watch. The current 3861 SS version has shot this watch to the top of my list. Omega is also my favorite brand. The history is the cherry on top.
My watch exactly.. 3861 Sapphire sandwich.. so many history packed into a tiny gorgeous machine.. this is the watch that I cherish the most, out of my collection.
Wore this on the wrist last weekend. I can’t believe how well it wore, so much better in person than photos. I thought it would be too big or bulky, not at all in reality. Looking for a decent deal and I’ll definitely pick one up. Market is still a little hot right now.
The 3861 coaxial movement is amazing. It gains less than 1 second per day and losses what is gained when it's off wrist. I set mine on March 1st, it is still spot on 7 weeks later. More accurate than my G-Shock beater. Simply amazing.
What are you talking about? The 3861 It doesn't lose it only gains. I have it myself it never lose it gains only. On wrist it gains around 1 second a day some days nothing at all. Off the wrist it gains 1-2 sec a day.
Bought it a few weeks ago and I'm really happy with how it wears and looks. With my Navitimer I feel like the chrono part of my collection is complete.
YES! I love the unbeatable history and I also think design wise it's absolutely killer. Tried one one at an AD it oh it's a must for my collection. When peeps post their moonwatch I never get tired of seeing them. Thanks Bruce!!
I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.
My top 3 for sure. I love it. I have the new version as well, and even for my small wrist, it's wonderful. I can't say enough. Everyone should have it in the collection bottom line
I've had this watch for over a year and in fact am wearing now. It's a fantastic watch. Elegant, comfortable and light on the wrist, versatile, and keeps great time. It gains about 2 seconds a week. I cant' recommend it enough. My only criticism is that changing the bracelet for straps is a bit challenging, even with the right tools, especially if you are concerned with scratching the lugs.
What a history this watch has. As you've said Bruce , what can compete with it. Grew up with the Apollo programme so really I should have one . Its still the greatest achievement in the history of human exploration and it'll be interesting to see what makes it to the moon next. I suspect however, it may be something along the lines of the proposed Omega Mars watch. Let's hope its not too long before we know. Think the sandwich dial would go nicely with my BB chrono though. Look forward to the next one.
In the EU these cost 8.600EUR, or about 9.548USD. This is from Omega, as in from the website/AD/boutiques. I can´t get over the fact that I bought my 1863 from Omega in 2019, for 4.400EUR. Don´t get me wrong, I still bought one, because I´m a sucker for the speedy, but it´s certainly not the best choice anymore in this price range. And definitely not twice as much of watch as it was in 2019.
Absolutely this. People gloss over the fact you're paying for a basic chronograph. No date, no auto, just nice looks and 95% marketing hype. The sapphire sandwich costs $11,925 AUD! The price is close to double what it was 8/9 years ago. Ridiculous.
No it doesn't, it is much less than 8600 EUR in Europe. I've bought it in summer 2021 for 7400 EUR, and now (last week) the price is 7900 EUR. And i live in the country with 3rd highest VAT in all of EU. So in Germany, France or Italy it is even less than 7900 EUR.
@@adrianobanak2824 I live in Austria, here, the MSRP is €8.600. I bought it from the Vienna Omega boutique for the list price that was put on the watch. The SS version is that much.
@@joemamaisfat Then you get ripped off in Austria, there is no other explanation. This is probably due to some kind of luxury tax, which is obviously high in Austria.
@@PepRex Historic... that's not a good enough reason to drop near $12,000AUD on a watch, that doesn't tick all of my boxes. Just because someone else's watch went to the moon... and also failed in one instance? (How's that history for you?) I'm buying a watch, I'm not buying history, that story is already free. If they give me a trip to the moon I'll buy two of them. All of this isn't to say someone else shouldn't buy one if they want to, it's still a fine watch. It's just WAY more expensive than 4/5 years ago.
I think the slight modifications done to this Speedy and still holding a Moonwatch aesthetic for collectors is a perfect example of how Omega should be able to make small modifications to improve their watches. I love the Seamaster 300m Diver but the only thing I think they should change aesthetically is the bracelet. They don’t even have to overhaul the entire design of the bracelet, just make some fine tuned adjustments so that it can look great tapered. I say keep everything else on the Seamaster Diver, and never change it, just taper that bracelet!
Impressive Omega history and an amazing watch but the Santo being the first sports/pilot watch and maybe the first wristwatch...impressive too. Anyways, todays iteration of the Moonwatch would be a grail watch for me. Beautiful.
Same experience with exquisite timepieces and would buy from them again. I have the 1863 but with a plastic crystal and sapphire back. Would love to have the new 3861 but there are already too many other watches in contention, not to mention Omega’s chronoscope. So many watches out there right now, it’s a golden age for the mechanical timepiece.
Its history is undeniable and its form is beautiful. Watch the youtube interview with the guy who tested everything that went aboard Apollo. It's amazing the watch could survive. I bought the solid back because I liked the overt homage writing. Screw the haters!
I have the old generation speedy with the 1861. My AD will let me swap out the bracelet. Nice. Old school movement with a modern “vintage “ look. Great video.
The Moonwatch...my first luxury watch and the only watch I regret selling. I purchased the 1863 in 2019 about a year after getting into the hobby and only paid $3600 big box and all. It was in great shape...very good. I sold it to help fund my office/mancave, but no way I'm paying that low for it again. I can't find one in good shape for under $4500 full big box and papers.
I own the sapphire sandwich version myself and love it! It's such a versatile watch, and with so much history. My only negative about it would be the big price jump in the speedy since the latest model was released (relative to the prices of other watches in this general price category). Scott S
Went into the AD last year with the full intention of buying the full SS version. But when I tried it on, I just didn’t’ love the taper of the stainless steel bracelet. Seems too skinny/disproportionate for the watch. IMHO (having also tried it on the nylon strap and the leather strap) it looks best on the nylon strap. But that’s a stealthy choice for a big price - so…I ended up walking out the AD with a pistachio dial Breitling Premier B09 😁😍
Just got my 3861 Hesalite Speedy. It reminds me of the incredible history in space and my favorite sci-fi stories of all time. I’m smitten with it. I have a Rolex Sea-Dweller 43mm and a PAM 328, but this watch has more charisma.
Great watch, I’d buy one but it doesn’t have a date indicator, all the competitors do, why the admission of what I feel is something fundamental in a timepiece of this calibre?
I have the latest Moonwatch, 3861 SS for a year and a half. It is the most iconic watch in the World-period. And you can still buy it without ridiculous wait list.
My favorite watch, fortunate to have some beautiful ones in my collection but Speedy will always be special to me... then again I'm a space nerd by trade so it holds a special place for me.
I’ve been thinking about why this is such a strap monster compared to other plain black and white watches, and I think it’s mostly to do with the twisted lugs also. The way they turn down toward and direct attention to the strap…my thoughts anyway
I have the previous generation and actually prefer it. The only thing I like about the new one over the one I own is the applied logo vs the printed one. Regardless of which Speedmaster you purchase, you can't go wrong and will have a great watch.
I bought the new sapphire sandwich a months back. Imo, the bracelet clasp is better and the watch overall fits better than my old speedmaster. For tge money it is hard to beat this watch considering what you are actually getting. I do agree the previous model seemed to be finished a bit better than this latest model, but im happy with my choice.
I had the first generation Sapphire Sandwich Speedy which i got in 2006 pre-owned. Beautiful, historic but, the inability to hack and its always running at and sometimes beyond its +11 seconds a day spec always bothered me. A few months ago I sold it for $3200 and purchased this new generation Speedy Sapphire. The 3861movement is a night and day difference from the older 1863 movement. It hacks and its accuracy has held at +1 second per day regardless whether I wind it every day or every other day and in any position on the night stand. The new bracelet is beautiful and its taper makes the 42mm Speedy wear smaller. Mine came with quick adjust clasp. The bracelet is almost too beautiful with its polished edge inserts. I wear it for more "formal" occasions but I bought Forstner's brushed version of the fabled Omega 1450 bracelet which I wear as an everyday "banger" as well as an Artem black sailcloth strap. The Speedy is such a versatile watch that it looks great on almost any strap or bracelet you choose to put on it. At 8K, it's a bit pricey but, to me, it gives a better bang for the buck than a Rolex does.
Premice, the Speedy is my favorite watch and never be without it again. I feel no one talks about the movement finish. Yes the coaxial new cal. is awesome, but the 1863 is not terribly inaccurate and it does look hand finished! is it? I think not, but I have a hard time finding a better finished movement under 10k. well worth the loss of a handfull of seconds per day.
@@BruceWilliams it's a question of having a piece of mind, not about picking the right watch for the occasion. You don't always know in advance where you'll end up later that day, and when the ship goes down, you better be ready
Actually u can swim with a speedy pro, just do not activate the chronograph in water, less say u shower or wash your hand or brave a rainy day. Btw there no swimming pool on moon if I not wrong as I have not been to moon.
Unlike other brands, 50 meters with Omega, are 50 true meters. They even mention it on their website. Swimming is absolutely not a problem. Only condition is to not operate the pushers under water.

The Speedmaster Pro (i.e. with hesalite) is still the only watch qualified for EVA (extra vehicular activity) so if the astronauts ought to have a watch on their wrists it will be this.
It's quite an underwhelming watch design wise. I remember buying a new one for £2800 8 years ago but ended up returning it. The price now is ridiculous.
They've always been available for under market price too. They sell a shit load of them and I think they catch a lot of new collectors out because they're ALWAYS told "they have to have one at least once". It's a good watch but not at current retail prices.

NASA Astronauts today are still wearing Omega Speedmasters. Matter of fact you can see them wearing it in various photos. I believe since Omega won the competition for NASA to actually endorse or assign government part numbers to another watch qualified they would have to run more tests again or competition. But if it aint broke no need to fix it. Partilcularly when it literally saved lives on some apollo missions.
Personally for me the lack of automatic movement is a deal-breaker. Don't get me wrong, I'll pick Speedy before Daytona any day of the week. But to me hand winding only makes it seem like Speedy is either a dinosaur or a jewellery you wear few times a year.
It's really not difficult to take the 15 seconds to wind the watch every morning. Different preferences I suppose. Personally though, the fact that the Speedmaster Professional is still a hand-wound chronograph is a massive plus.
@@NomadicPhoton Different people different take I guess. Imo it's not a problem if you have only one or two watches. But we all know you just can't stop collecting at one or two. And the sapphire sandwich version shows the absolute beauty of a movement. I just hope that Omega does a peripheral rotor version to bring the watch to modern era.

From what I've heard the new crown is better than previous versions but I've only owned the 3861. Can't say that it's bothered me, I pop it off and wind it when bored in meetings 🤷♂️
If you're not a watch enthusiast I believe you could get fed up having to wind it every day. But then you hadn't bought it in the first place. Winding a manual watch is for me a pleasure every morning.
I Don't Own A Speedy.......cos I own a Bulova Lunar Pilot 1. regular no date and 2. a Blacked out version. I may even get the 50th anniv version. ALL for under $3K
Well that watch was totally ruined for me the day the Speedmaster 321 was released. THAT is the real mooneatch. The normal one is now a glorified moonswatch. It's simple. The movement has nothing do to with the real moon landing. The Speedmaster 321 has the actual movement that went to the moon. So doesn't it feel like you have a watch that LOOKS like the one that went to the moon with the normal version? And the speedy 321 is the real thing
