The Unbelievable Fall of Terrakion.

Pokemon Competitive Singles has been turned on its head with the release of The Indigo Disk DLC.
Terrakion was once an OU level threat back in Generation 5, and remained in the respectable UU tier since then. With great offensive stats and typing, and access to the coveted Stealth Rock, Terrakion was never too bad.
In Gen 9 however, Terrakion's usage was so low that it fell all the way down to PU, Smogon's lowest official tier. Seeing Terrakion amongst peers such as Plusle and Morpeko just doesn't seem right.
Let's explore how this outlier situation occurred, thanks to quirks in Smogon's tiering system and various different factors affecting Terrakion's unprecedented low usage.
Will he see it?

Some will never figure out how to get Terrakion in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Terrakion Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Terrakion Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RU-vid. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Part of why they introduced quick drops was because of the introduction of dlc and home in Gen 8, which would have meant that lower tiers couldn’t fully stabilize until like two years after the initial release of the game. Quick drops existed for SwSh DLC, just not the initial release

Terrakion has fallen from OU all the way down to PU, the lowest official Smogon tier. Just to give you an idea of how ridiculous this is folks, let's take a look at some other PU-ranked Pokemon. We have such heavy hitters as Basculin... we've got, of course, Muk, and Plusle. And then we've got Terrakion. Terrakion! This is not a bad Pokemon! PU is for bad Pokemon like this. This is once a king of OU. In Gen 6 it was UUBL. It's never been below UU. This is a solid Pokemon all-around! It's got great offensive typing, high stats, solid speed, great offensive movepool, access to stealth rock, access to taunt... it's got utility, offensive options... I mean frankly, this has to be some sort of mistake. This Pokemon does not belong amongst Plusle. It just doesn't. The PU council has banned this guy unanimously already, one of the fastest bans I've ever seen. So how did this happen folks? How did Terrakion drop even further than Pokemon such as Flygon and Meganium? That's just nonsensical, how did this even happen? I think this incident was the result of a funny quirk of Smogon's tiering system. I believe Gen 9 was the first generation where Pokemon could drop multiple tiers in a tier shift. Previously, it would just be 'you can only drop 1 tier at a time' like you can drop from OU to UU maximum. But with that system, it would take a while for the lower tiers to actually establish themselves because these drops are monthly and every month everything drops one tier at a time only. So they implemented this system where if something has insanely low usage, it can drop more than one tier. Stuff like Plusle or Minun or Meganium. And something you do see when new Pokemon get released, when new content comes out, like DLC or Pokemon Home, are Pokemon that are probably at the OU power level dropping to UU just because of new toy syndrome. Everyone's using the new Pokemon, maybe stuff like Garchomp, Amoonguss, Greninja, Manaphy, are dropping in usage not because they're bad, but because they're overshadowed by all the new options. I'm a little surprised honestly to see stuff like Latios and Zapdos and Iron Moth falling down to UU; that's a little surprising, but I'm sure that they'll rise back up in the future. So usually in the first tier shift after the DLC comes out, you see a bunch of Pokemon placed in tiers that do not represent their power level. But still, even considering that, which always happens, Terrakion ranked in PU is the most significant outlier here, maybe the biggest difference between a Pokemon's power level and the tier they're ranked in I've ever seen in my life. But when you actually think about it, Terrakion's absurdly low usage in OU actually makes sense. Sometimes a Pokemon's usage doesn't represent their inherent power at all. There's many factors that affect a Pokemon's usage. The biggest and most obvious reason is that Iron Boulder is now here, who not only outclasses Terrakion in terms of its competitive viability, being the most powerful popular Paradox Pokemon introduced in the new DLC, and in terms of flavor and new toy syndrome, people are probably going to lean more towards using the fun new robot Terrakion rather than the old Terrakion that they have probably already used in past generations. Terrakion doesn't really thrive in any particular area in Gen 9 OU honestly. In past gens, this Pokemon would work well as a speedy hazard-setting lead with access to Stealth Rock and Taunt for that disruptive edge, and STAB Close Combat and something like Stone Edge or even Rock Tomb to lower their speed. But something like this isn't really valuable anymore. I mean, Stealth Rock-setting leads got a big hit when Boots were introduced into the game. Most Rock-weak Pokemon run Boots now, making the previously common strategy of sacrificing a Pokemon slot just to get your Rocks up early not quite as worthwhile as it once was. Going in a purely offensive direction with Terrakion in Gen 9 OU isn't really that worthwhile either. Something like a Swords Dance sweeping set... I mean the typing is just too frail, it doesn't hit things that other threats don't, it doesn't have an edge over the other threats in the format generally. Even something like a Choice Band Terrakion, I mean, how does it get on the field? What does it have over other breakers? It also really doesn't help that Terrakion not only matches up poorly into Great Tusk, one of the most common Pokemon in the format, also Terrakion is outclassed by Great Tusk itself! Why would you dedicate a team slot to Terrakion who has similar offensive tools, similar utility, but the same type profile as Great Tusk, meaning there's overlap, and Great Tusk almost always outdoes Terrakion in terms of utility. It has Rapid Spin, better typing in Ground/Fighting, more tools in general, better coverage now with Fire- and Ice-coverage and stuff like that. Even has Supercell Slam,. So basically after the DLC came out, folks, Terrakion didn't really appeal to anyone. The more serious players trying to build optimal teams would never want to use Terrakion because it overlaps with Great Tusk and Great Tusk is just better. Iron Boulder is just better offensively. And even casual players, trying out all the new stuff, why would they want to use old Terrakion when they can use new Robot Terrakion? When you consider all that folks, it actually isn't that outlandish to see why Meganium had higher usage than Terrakion, even though obviously Meganium is terrible. Maybe someone likes it because it looks like a Brontosaurus whereas Terrakion, no one really wanted to use it for any reason. Kind of a shame, I really like Terrakion. It's a cool Pokemon, but I guess that's what happens when power creep and new toy syndrome collide to absolutely send Terrakion usage down into the depths.

In other news folks, we have the survey results. Do people like the new DLC metagame? Do we think anything needs to be banned? Do we want that Kokoloko insane ban 10 Pokemon at once tiering method to happen? Well, let's take a look. The enjoyment factor of the new metagame is a 7/10 from the general audience. I think that's pretty good. The pool of new Pokemon are all fun. Good new additions in my opinion. Maybe like, some of them could be more overwhelming with more time to test them, but for now no one feels like anything is particularly broken. Pretty much just Terapagos was the only one that got banned. Nothing else has been too crazy, to be honest. Competitiveness? I mean 6.4/10, 6.3/10... this isn't very high, is it? But apparently, this is an improvement over the last metagame, or the last DLC batch, so we can consider that a bit of an improvement. A new method of tiering where multiple Pokemon would be banned at once and retested individually was not supported by the community, at least not in a majority, so that won't be happening, folks. All the outraged gamers on my last video? You can rest easy, because they're not going to ban everything; don't worry. And then we have the Pokemon. Every Pokemon was ranked from 1 to 5, 1 being "This Pokemon's fine. Totally balanced" and 5 being "It's a huge problem and probably needs to receive a suspect test or ban." And the highest was Roaring Moon with 3.24 from qualified players, 3.34 from general. Honestly, that's not that high. This being the highest-rated Pokemon as of the new DLC is a good sign, I think, especially because this is not even a new Pokemon. It was a Old Pokemon that got unbanned. So the new DLC, in fact, makes Roaring Moon feel more balanced than it was in the past. That's a great thing, right? Gholdengo was the second-most, and honestly, I thought Gholdengo would be #1 and have like a 4-rating. But still, like a 3-sonething. Folks, I see a lot of you comment about how you hate Gholdengo. "It's the sole culprit of the metagame." But where are you on these surveys? Go vote on the survey for number 5 for Gholdengo. Make your voice heard, because this is only a 3.26! This doesn't... it doesn't add up, folks. People are surprisingly okay with Deoxys-Speed as well. I thought this would get a lot of support as well, maybe even have a suspect test or a quickban. But no, Deoxys-Speed... people like it, actually. That's fun. I mean, it's cool to see a new face in the format, for sure. This Pokemon's enormous speed and versatility might prove to be an issue in the future, but for now, people are alright with it, so we're going to let it stay for the moment. Kingambit as well, remaining well-liked among the gamers. I still hate Kingambit. I think Kingambit's broken. If the people want it, I guess... what can I do? I do think that the influx of new options has made it a bit less oppressive than maybe it was in the past. I still think it's quite an inherently powerful centralizing force that we should continue to look at in the future. And then we've got Kyurem, who's another one that I thought would get support, actually. It's really powerful, but I mean this Pokemon was a problem as recently as Gen 8, so could be re-evaluated in the future. But I enjoy this Pokemon. I really like Kyurem, always have, cool Pokemon, glad to see it back as an option. And we're okay with Volcarona and Gouging Fire, too! Nothing else got that much support. We're totally okay with Great Neck, Serperior, so at the moment, nothing's getting suspect-tested, or banned, or anything! We're just going to leave the metagame as it is. Isn't that cool? Everyone likes the DLC reasonably well. We're all happy to let the metagame evolve naturally for a bit. Leave things as they are for now. Nothing stands out as too big of a problem. I think that's a great thing. The new content, overall, seems to have improved the OU experience, at least for now. How do you folks feel about the new metagame? Anything that stands out to you as a potential concern, or is it all just upside? Is it all great? What have you been using? Let me know down below in the comments, and thank you for watching.

Iron Boulder has some really good stuff going for it. In no particular order: 1) It's fast and strong while not being fragile; 2) It's got solid SpDef, and is probably nigh-unkillable on the Special side in sand; 3) It's got a 100% accurate Rock-type move only _slightly_ weaker than Stone Edge, and which bypasses Protect; 4) It's got Close Combat to deal with pesky Dark types; 5) It can deal with its bad typing with Tera, either Tera-Flying to avoid EQ, Tera-Ground to boost its Earthquake coverage or Tera-Fighting to resist Dark-types and boost Close Combat;

Terrakion falling is so bizarre on paper, but in terms of ou usage it makes sense. Also regarding the survey, I'm surprised Kingambit isn't higher. I expected Moon and Ghold to be up there but Kingambit has been broken for soooo long. Imo it's the only mon in the meta that needs a suspect test outside of maybe Moon (Yes, including Gholdengo. I don't believe Ghold is an issue.)

6:52 I think this shows a flaw in how the data is presented - just showing the averages makes it unclear how Goldhengo is actually seen. But Finchinator's description says that it got a lot of 5s and 1-2s. Showing the standard deviation would show this, and if we also saw the median score then we would have a better idea of how most of the community feels compared to an average in this instance. The Goldhengo haters ARE showing up, it's just that the Goldhengo lovers are counterbalancing them almost perfectly :P

The main reason Sceptile is so low is because it has a mostly physical movepool while favoring Special Attack, with no way to boost Special Attack, and the new move it gained this gen, Shed Tail, is banned in this format as far as I'm aware. At least Meganium knows what it is, mostly focused on a cleric defensive set. Sceptile either has to deal with a crap starting physical attack stat and boost with Dragon/Swords Dance to make use of decent moves, or go Special and be stuck with an unflinching set of moves with little wiggle room.

I think the worst part is that Terrakion's probably gonna languish in NUBL. There's already fierce competition for Fighting types in RU, and they (mostly*) don't have the downside of being weak to other fighting types, they dont fear Tinkaton's Gigaton Hammer, they don't have to fear being weak to most of the pokemon they're supposed to check, they have priority moves, they're not weak to water/rain, and they have access to actually relevant coverage. Poor boy's gotta *hope* for power creep if he wants to stay in NU. *Lucarios do not interact

There is no way it stays in PU. Shiny toy syndrome is the primary thing affecting ranking now. “Balance” is a myth unfortunately. There is simply no way a Pokémon with a bst that high and an ability that doesn’t absolutely destroy it (like truant or slow start) should be anything lower than ru. That being said, might be fun to just hop on showdown and absolutely wreak havoc in the lower tiers for a bit until people remember that THOSE stats in the Tera meta game is pretty good.
@danhoenn
@danhoenn 8 месяцев назад
I almost wonder if there’s a modification that could be made to the tier system that factors a Pokémon’s strength into its tier? Obv pokemon is a competitive game so when there’s a good mon it has a high usage rate (a pokemon is a strong team member so therefore it’s popular) BUT this doesn’t always apply the other way around (a pokemon is popular therefore it must be a strong team member). Like you said new toy syndrome affects tiering of strong OU mons just due to use rate. Could there be a way to counteract new toy syndrome? Say there was a weak pokemon that was not competitively viable but people used it anyways just because they want to. Why should that bump others from a tier? Maybe there’s a way that strength (BST or another measure of viability) could be taken into consideration so that tiering isn’t solely a popularity contest
@lucasgreer1736
@lucasgreer1736 8 месяцев назад
I don't feel like bst would really work, as there are a decent number of low bst pokemon that are still very good. However, manual viability rankings are how the early gens work, so they could possibly be taken into account.

@dm9910
@dm9910 8 месяцев назад
Basically the new system that lets mons drop multiple tiers was introduced because new Pokemon games are getting an increasing number of DLCs which add a bunch of new/returning mons. It sucks to have new lowtier mons taking months to drop to their rightful place (both for the sake of the low tiers themselves, and because they muddy the waters in the higher tiers where they don't belong but exist by technicality), so the new system makes sense to try speed up this process, but the tradeoff is that it's possible for some mons to overshoot and end up in a lower tier than they should be. Terrak is kind of a perfect storm in that he's ridiculous in low tiers but utterly outclassed by a specific Pokemon in OU so his usage is rock bottom.
