I went "DEEP" in my clutter cleanup... Working in 15 min intervals...took me 1 year! Everything is done...it's worth it...my life opened up...can find everything in my house...no longer stuck..well worth it...
That's how I did it too, I was pleasantly surprised that it took less time than I expected. I picked up speed the more I did. The best secret I learned was to have a home for everything so it could always go back there.
@@A.L.75 well personally I hate when people make statements like this. I am female but the mess doesn't bother me. So when people say boys and men don't see mess that is like saying to me I am not a woman
There is psychological phenomenon called threshold of disgust. This is important to consider. As Lorie said, nothing happens without motivation. I have a high threshold of disgust. I have lived in cluttered homes for well over 30 years. I think most of the "de-cluttering experts" have a low threshold of disgust and don't really need a reason to be neat and tidy, it's just the way they naturally feel about things. So to help those who really need help, those with high thresholds of disgust, they need help from a fellow high-thresholder. LOL. It's ALL about motivation if you ask me. We "messers" don't need advice on how to organize, unless there is one with a particularly low IQ. We need help with MOTIVATION. So here are some motivating suggestions from a man with a high threshold of disgust: Reasons to clean and organize your house: 1.) It provides some essential physical exercise. Get off your butt!!!! Escape from the sofa, the lazy-boy, and the office chair! Sitting is bad for your health! 2.) It makes everyday life easier because you can find things, plus you get the peace of mind and satisfaction of knowing you are ready - ready to entertain, ready to move, etc. 3.) It helps tremendously if you have to move your residence; it makes the move much easier! Especially if you pre-containerize/pre-box/pre-pack most things you use infrequently. 4.) It gives you a stronger negotiating position with your landlord, since you could more easily move, AND they have less to bitch about, i.e. “your place is a pigsty” etc. 5.) It helps you live-with and/or entertain other people who are compatible with you, and this will give you emotional fuel, motivation, energy, networking, etc. 6.) It helps your house look better 7.) It helps your house smell better 8.) Some say clutter can make your soul tired!? 9.) It reduces the chances of infestation by germs, bugs, rodents, etc. 10.) If you do find a bug or rodent, it makes tracking and hunting them easier.
Interesting concept with the threshold of disgust. I do think though that there are some people that do not have a clue about how to organize even if you walk them through it and hold their hand and it doesn't have to do with them being idiots it's just the way their brains work. My mother is a hoarder and this is the way her brain works. She has absolutely no clue on how to organize anything. She just doesn't get the concept of putting like items together even after talking with her about this and showing her how it works and on and on and on 4 years she doesn't get it it doesn't click.
it might be possible: You said a lot of interesting and helpful things, but saying a person who doesn't know how to organize has a low IQ isn't accurate. People who collect things, or who have OCD, or other issues can know how to organize, but they are stuck on keeping items due to sentimental value, or other reasons.
Yes I think these supposed experts don't realize how hurtful it is when they just want someone to throw away everything. I am not talking about the maker of this video. I don't know this person. But the ones you see on TV just expect the person to get rid of 99% of what they own. It's not their stuff, so it must be garbage. One thing I have a problem with in your statement is that it makes things easier to find. I don't know about when the area is clean, but when I start cleaning I start losing things.
This is an excellent video!👍 I will re-watch this a couple more times because the advice is smart! Thank you for sharing! I have found that these three things go together: 1) being organized/de-cluttering 2) being fit/exercising/losing weight 3) saving money/not over-spending The more I achieved in one area the better I was in another. However, for me de-cluttering seems to have the most impact on losing weight and saving money. I don't know why but the more I de-cluttered the better I felt.
I expect myself to fix everything TODAY.. It took me 5 yrs of depression to become disorganized and wear blinders. It's gonna take years to fix it from within but I'm getting there. :) self acceptance
Oh my goodness! This is so true! I'm finally deciding on "MY WHY"... I'M FED UP WITH THE CLUTTER THAT CLUTTERED MY MIND AND LIFE. SYSTEMS ON....THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING THE TRUTH! I'M TRUSTING MYSELF AND GETTING HELP!!!
I am really glad to have come across this video. Often when we feel overwhelmed or powerless in a situation, it is reflected in what results as clutter. I grew up in a black family that was raised in the post Great Depression era, so the answer for my dad's siblings to declutter and assuage their guilt for tossing was to pass all their tacky hand me downs to him since he was the youngest. My mother happened to be the youngest too so this pattern was replicated somewhat for her as well. They were trying to fill their emotional tank by collecting stuff but never had a predetermined purpose or place for its use. Because my father, mother, and sister never really faced things to work through their emotional hurdles, I was the one in the family who had to clear out 25 years of clutter by myself. Unfortunately, since others in my family saw my success, they sent even more stuff to try to refill what they perceived as empty space and subconsciously sabotaged what I had established. At times, in my circle of family and friends, they also expected me to serve them by helping them get organized, clean and help maintain it, sort through their items even suggesting that I sell it on eBay on their behalf and take over the responsibility of dealing with the consequences clutter due to their lack of discipline. I helped them while lovingly empowering them to confront their issues, learn customized techniques for their maintenance plan, and have the courage to deal with the weightier areas of their lives. I realize that it is ideal to have help in developing a daily routine for organization maintenance, and especially since by nature women are relational to do this in groups. For years, I have fancied the idea of having house parties designed to have a group of supportive caring friends get together to help clean, organize, sort, and beautify the surroundings of a designated member of the group and rotate the process. I love the idea of emotionally supporting women, sharing tips for managing a daily routine, and lovingly holding them accountable to live their best lives possible.
I'm so sorry for your family losses and that no one was there to pitch in and help you at such a sad time. I had a similar experience with one sibling that didn't care. A lot of caregivers are facing this issue, as I did. Fortunately you had the presence of mind to see what had to be done and get over the guilt of donating or selling these items that no one in your family wanted. That's a big step! As a co-chair of a clutter group, I've heard the house party idea suggested many times, or even just one person coming over to help you, and then you help them--like a buddy system. In the end, no one wanted anyone to see their clutter, didn't want others touching their personal items, or despite being in the same group, didn't want to be judged by anyone. Hope you find like-minded people, Cadmar Business Suite!
Wonderful encouraging video. The truth is told. I started to declutter my home a few years ago and it was difficult to comprehend that you really need a system and finding out why you accumulate so many things and keep on hanging onto them. I have made the biggest progress after watching a few videos, reading books and decluttering by categories. Thank you for your clear explanation.
Love your wisdom and your videos. Thank you for sharing so generously with us. I would love to see a video that showed options for jewelry storage, especially for those of us who prefer our jewelry to be in a container, not out in the open.
Really good tips. I have been working on decluttering for several years. Due to several family deaths I inherited a lot of stuff. I had just reached my goal and had major surgery. I have been laid up for 2 months, 2 more to go. I had to hire someone to come in and clean for me. It was so much easier for her to clean and saved me money. Now as I am laying in bed, I'm wondering what I can do next. Decluttering is addictive!
Kathleen Savage It IS addictive, Kathleen. I am happy this is coming around and resonating with you. Let me know if there is a topic you would like to see me cover. Best of luck with your future!
Truth...I watched Mel Robbins on stop screwing yourself up...this info here is an obvious reflection but so many refuse to think... six weeks ago maybe seven weeks ago, I really started working backwards coming forward into the house. And I am feeling much stronger. But that took four years after my mom finally passed away. It wasn't that she was missed so much as she was so difficult and I was the caregiver mode that the depression was phenomenal. So take heart dear people. It will get better. It is one step and one piece of clutter in the trash at a time..Blessings.
Thank you for your videos. I love your advice and I love that you always mention that you are wearing clothes from Goodwill. I have shopped thrift shops most of my life bc I like contributing to a cause and not directly supporting sweat shops. Saving money is always a plus too!
I allways watch your videos, but this one is a MASTER PIECE!!! You're right, all those truths are really uncomfortable but they are SO TRUE! And I needed to hear them, so thank you very much for doing this!
Daniula02 It is my pleasure. I love doing these videos, but mostly I love helping people- it's the reason I got into this business to begin with. Thank you for watching my videos!
What a wonderful thought to end your video with, Lorie! Not enough gratitude in the world! Thank you for your well thought out, sensible video. Seems like you speak from the heart. I co-chair a clutter meeting and will introduce your video to our class.
I love your videos . I cleaned and things would get back to crazy within 2 months. I think unless u have systems that deal with things on weekly bases it will not work that take 1-5 min .Simple rules as laundry once a week , putting your clothes away on the hanger once you wear them or in the laundry basket . Clean surfaces only . And decluttering honestly ( I used the kon Marie method)
just watching this makes me cry...I know I have issues I'm so cluttered in my home but I can't let things go...i know this problem stem from my childhood...
So how does this work for families? Who is the house a reflection of when it comes to shared spaces? Also how to organize when you are a couple who have very different needs according to your individual internal authorities?
Thank you for this video! I have subscribed and 👍. This is an excellent video that really applies to every aspect of life. Thanks so much!!! Will check out your book on Amazon too!
Inhave had to learn to stop giving items emotional value and get it gone. Its hard when it was your kids 1st whatever or a piece of furniture your Mom bought you before she passed away. I'm telling myself others need blessings just like I do and someone needs that item or my Mom would want me to throw it out. Take a picture if I need to and scrapbook it but get it gone. Daily struggle but making progress. Moving helps too!
Haha 😂 even if you have something as simple as a trash can you need a system to know how to use it. I always do it like this: open it and throw the thing in. When the can is full add the stuff to the big can to be picked up by the garbage truck. Then it is empty and you can fill it up again. I think this technique is actually great and I am glad you made me aware of it!
Thats right, just throw it in the trash can. Or use the bags you get from grocery stores, then put it in the trash on trash day. The goal is to finally have an empty trash can on trash day.
JustAn80sGirl you said it cuz you needed to get it out ... i feel for you ... i also have dépression but also chronic pain .... and a set of twins.... its hard ...and then thé guilt of not being able to do thé things you need too ...even harder .....so sorry to hear what you have been dealing with ... try to stay strong ...maybe try to put all the good memories in your mind to over come that terrible one you have ....I know easier said then done ....xoxox
there are many reasons for clutter. small spaces don't leave a lot of room for anything. I moved from a four bedroom home to a small apartment. also, some people never lived in a clean home and they didn't learn how to even clean. for some people clutter doesn't bother people. I have met people who invite you into your home and they have no shame at all about the clutter. My x husband was a fanatic about any clutter to the point that he did not even want water marks in the sink, this is ridiculous!!!!! Balance is key.
Paper is a real problem. Takes up space can give a musty smell and is a fire risk. I am scanning and saving on my hard drive the advantage is also I can copy the hard drive and keep a CD copy in the garden shed. Then if I have a fire my memory's are safe.
Clutter, that is, exquisite things decorating the house are a sign of one intelagence and good taste. The modernists hate clutter because they are usually frigid people. Traditional homes are cozy, and midcentury houses are alway always cold and morge-like, especially the un-used annaceptic kitchens where nothing is ever gotten dirty. I’ll take “clutter” any day of the week.
+Corina Moreno Oh my gosh, I know. It took a little longer than we thought it would. But did you see- you can now sign up for a free- no strings- membership?
I thought the advice was good. Especially the thing about buying items not being able to help you if you don't have a system. But I have plenty of reasons to clean and I still don't do it. I need to clean so that home repairs can be done but the experts can't come in unless the house is clean. It will cost more in the electric bill because it's not clean. That should be enough motivation to get anybody to clean.
I love my home office. I have a glossy white desk, crystal table lamp and an iMac. However I have this ugly all in one laser printer in black that takes up desk space and mars the aesthetic. I have a small white all in one inkjet printer that I want to replace it with. My dilemma is that the inkjet printer gobbles up hundreds of dollars in ink. I read an article which stated that printer jet ink is more expensive per once than champagne or gas. I would like to get rid of the black behemoth printer. Do you think I should replace it with my light compact inkjet?
Madame Cristina maybe you can use the black machine but store it under your desk so 1 it isn't in your contant view 2 you can use the more affordable solution 3 ask yourself which do you value more: your aesthetic or your money 4 if you decide to go with the white machine commit to making the bare minimum of prints. Hope this helps!
My back and jipd habe made just sitting bery painful now cant do anything. Its embarrassing and dont habe anyone that wants to help me. My husband won't help me hed just start yelling to get out of helping.
Some depressed folks parse out their energy so taking a shower, getting kiddos to school, cooking meals, doing laundry feels like they exerted their maximum output then the pre-existing piles, new mail, dusting and dirty dishes and pans just accumulate. Their minds are full of tasks they have to do, but time and actual activity they can do just isn't enough, it doesn't accomodate or get the jobs started let alone done. Others just are faulty in estimating how long something takes or sorting out all the steps involved to accomplishing their goal. They may not be committed to following through on all that is required. Others resist making goals so have no idea what exactly needs doing. If this last group watches Martha Stewart or someone else who has an exacting perfection oriented style (here on youtube there are a few), they feel defeated before starting since they are in competition and know they cannot attain that level of accomplishment... Depression hinders folks in so many ways...
white scio economically privileged people who can affrod th support needed AND ALSO MAKE THE MONEY TO HAVE LESS STRESS IN ONES LIFE,SEESCH..THEN THIS APPLIES
