The Underfloor Heating Saga Continues...

The pipes are down and our replacement part has been fitted. But there's a new challenge with our Uponor underfloor heating system. And we've been scratching our heads and talking to suppliers and manufacturers over the last week.
We think we have a solution but it goes again the steps laid out in the instruction manual and is counter to many of the online resources we've found (some linked below).
Join us for a spot of trouble shooting as we fill, vent and pressure test our underfloor heating system to make sure it all works before we lay the final screed over the top.

You have to keep the pressure in the pipes while pouring the floor because the pipe is expanding at 6 bar. When in use it will go from hot to cold so the pipe will expand and contract, that 6 bar while the floor is drying up will make room for expansion.

@maplin007

Does that apply to Alupex pipe in your opinion which is very rigid and the norm these days vs purely plastic? I would be very surprised if it does to the same extent, also could you risk splitting the pipes seam or blow junctions on the manifold, most run around 1.5 bar in operation. When heated most pipe grows in length too, personally I have not had any problems in 20 years testing with pressure much lower than 6 Bar. Also If you fill with water the pressure will then change with temperature and can go up way past 6 bar even if you set at 3 bar and by next morning be 1 bar or anywhere in between as the day goes on, along with pipe distorting in length, rare But on very hot days can occur with plastic only, never seen it with Alupex.

Coming from a Fortune 100 background, the lack of documentation often means a lack of testing and quality control. When you hire a documentor (not just a Tech Writer) MAKE SURE that person (a) participates in the process from blueprints through Beta, AND make sure that person can be critical and ask questions as an end user would (the big 'why do Beta' reason). Finally if you do a 'Quick Guide' make sure it is entirely pictorial (i.e. multilingual) - IBM was doing this as early as the late 1970s! It saved thousands of hours of end user frustration!

Filling a system can be done by 1st allowing one loop to fill regardless of whether the others are open at one end, the others will fill to a lesser extent. After 10 mins or so close that loop open another, once you have gone right through go back and do it again. Once completed open all and let it run for a while until clear. Its difficult to do only if you have low water pressure from the hose attached , try and prevent having any leaks on the hose too. You will hear air rattling in the system so use your ears and if you like run the hose your venting the system with into a bin so its under water so you can see the bubbles.

A few comments after having lived with an in-floor heating system for many years that I had upgraded to a modern modulating-condensing boiler. 1) An in-floor system is low temp compared to a radiator system - so quite different in operation. That is, variable water temps from 110F to 140F - compared to 160F for a radiator boiler. 2) I don't recall seeing "air scrubbers" installed at high points in your system, and my system was installed with two. 3) My system had a "fill" circuit hard-piped and separated from our potable water by a double check, back flow preventer (required by code since we were connected to city water). 4) Your system looks to have 3 circuits and I'd have guessed two to three times as many circuits for the size of house. The reason is to adjust comfort since the high mass in-floor system has a slow response and fairs best with more circuits to manage temps throughout the house. 5) Are you heating your domestic hot water indirectly from the boiler? I had a circuit for the indirect hot water tank, and then used a "pre-heat" tank in front of the indirect tank heated by an evacuated tube solar hot water panel. During the summer months, solar heated the water and in winter, the boiler augmented heat from solar.

Guys I am no plu.ber but did my own system by Installing everything and then just filling the system as on the bigger system (boiler or furnace or what ever heat source) it has a bleed valve that captures the air in the system automatically so not an issue as it removes the air during circulation. Yes no PTFE tape needed and a no-no on an olive type connection as the parts cut into the olive and the olive cuts into the pipe while tighting the fitting creating the seal.

How many models of the Renault Clio are there? Hundreds. It's good to know the basic principles you need to apply, have some signs of what to do and know the advice you are getting will work. This will help a lot of people who will want to choose a product they can see the installation process for - companies might be more likely to make their own videos for youtube and offer chat boards for customers to share tips. At leastyou didn't have to use geotextile. Maybe if there's a big leak, you'll do that then, but people are genuinely willing you on.

Hi, you have a Uponor Comfort Port DUO Smatrix Base Pulse (I think). Just went to Uponor site to check the instalation and user manual and I think you did the filling/pressure test the right way. It's stated the actuators are in the open position "First-Open-Function" and you should not apply power because they would close in 10 minutes. Yes the manual is of little help, Uponor is a high quality brand, but the manuals are rubbish, too technical and sometimes too short, you may need to check the thermostat manual for some functions. Also some important details may be lost when doing the translation, I've seen this before with other german brands. Overall you did well! As someone commented before, keep the pipes with operating pressure while pouring the floor. Oh, almost forgot: never sell tools! They're like an investment...😁
@natrogersau
@natrogersau Год назад
Yeah I thought I saw on another channel there is a difference between the pressure before and after the slab because of the compression in the pipes . Do you test before you pour slab to make sure you don’t end up with a non working system with a slab on it?

the connector for the pipe on which you put Teflon tape is called "eurocon 16x3/4" if you ever need to replace it, as a rule of thumb if you use a rubber gasket there is no need to put Teflon tape, the water seal is before threads are engaged, but for some fittings, there is no lip to put a gasket so you need to use Teflon tape.

I have found that anytime there is a rubber O-ring such as what you have with the compressiion fitting it is good to use vaseline on the rubber and what that will do is keep life in the rubber and make it easier to seal, and also , if ever need to take it apart it is a lot easier. Vaseline is really a plumbers friend. Now as for teflon tape it is also a good product and is another preventive measure to avoid leaks. i think anytime you can avoid problems it is always a good thing.

I never had a problem with normal size houses by filling them altogether . The circuits must be layed in a proper horizontal way. And lets face it the worst that can happen is that one circuit does not heat properly because off an air bubble. You can allways bleed the circuit with that problem a bit more . I mean it's not so that you ruin the entire installation nothing can damage . What I do mis at your installation is a small auto magic air pot over time some air can come out off the water if you start heating the water . If that happens over time it can stop the circulation . I that you have a bit off room to fit one. Exactly where you say this is still leaking you can fit an auto air vent.

Just be aware that all those fancy remote controlled electronic "gadgets" will fail within 15 yrs. The failing always happens when it's not the good moment. We bought our house from a central heating installer that tried a lot of luxery novelties. They are all slowly failing. Window screens that have trouble to open or close, light switches with dimmer functions that fail, backyard remote controlled gate that refuses to open just when you are receiving 4 m3 meters of compost, and of course a failing electronic manifold in the middle of winter. Also the solar water heater tubes failed and had to be disabled, and a year later the very big central heating storage vessel (designed for use with solar water heating) started leaking.

Interesting video, Im iompresed there is no option to get off thet electric actuators and manualy close each circle. Instend of bucker the plumbers use circulatin pump with canister for sunction to fet rid of air. greetings from pague cz.

I can't imagine why you can't find a cap. I mean all plumbing screw-on connectors come in standardized dimensions. Just take one actuator out and find the type of thread it is used. Then it's easy to find a suitable cap.
