The Underrated Full Body Exercise (that looks a little silly)

I know it looks a little silly but this is an underrated full body exercise when it comes to cardio and conditioning.
And I’m not expecting you to go into the middle of your commercial gym weight room floor and start doing it…
But the Towel Taz is an amazing, and deceptively hard conditioning drill that can be a great way to mix up your cardio sessions without all the impact and even put an emphasis on your upper body and core.
It can get you moving in every direction and be done no matter your fitness level.
And it doesn’t require fancy equipment.
Heck you can grab your comforter or even a sheet off your bed if you don’t have a moving blanket.
In this video I want to break down the benefits of this amazing move because it can be done without any fancy equipment and is deceptively humbling!

My favorite part of the video was when your two adorable pups decided to participate in your fun game! But, to answer your question, doing one-foot balance drills on a vibration plate. It sounds gimmicky, but I'm in my 70s and lost vision in one eye, which totally trashed my balance. Since falls are the leading cause of death for women in my age bracket, I'm obsessed with training my balance, and the vibration plate is ideal for that. My first try at standing on one foot on the plate - I didn't make it 1 second! Now, I can manage about 10 seconds. So, making improvements, aiming for 30 seconds on BOTH sides (the standard for young fit individuals), not just my strong side. Love your content!

Definitely gonna have to try this. It makes me think a lot of flow rope movements. One of my favorite nontraditional forms of cardio and conditioning is lightsaber twirling and HEMA-style forms. I'll start without about 5 minutes of twirls like the Obi-Ani and moulinets while changing directions. Then I'll do alternating cut, block, cut, block up and down my driveway (it's a moderately long driveway) and move on to strike series like cut overhead left, overhead right, underhand left, underhand right, lateral left, lateral right, underswing, overhead, thrust, spin, return, repeat. Do that for 20 minutes and it's pretty solid. Bonus points for nerdy fun with a dual-ready lightsaber.

!!!!!!!!!! Driving over the road with a 53’ step deck I don’t have cargo blankets. But…. I have a lot of chain. And an idea. I rarely stay in truck stops. I’ve got a run that Thames me from Utah to Texas to Washington state and I gave different places to park that aren’t crowded and noisy. I’m going to try this basic idea with a 25’ chain.

I'm using an interval timer to try to get up every hour while working from home and do 20 kettleball swings. It's surprising how few times I get up and also how much change I can feel from the few times I do take the quick break. I suspect an interval timer is supposed to be used for maybe an hour but I set it so that I have 9 intervals over 8 hours. My working day is my total set. I can feel my glutes growing and it's very motivating. I've even started setting it to run on weekends.

Some of my favorite untraditional exercises are when I travel back to my hometown and visit the local park to use its stall bars. I love to take my pullup assist bands and anchor low, high or somewhere in between and pull backwards and forwards on the other end of the band, manipulating the distance between myself and the stall bars and subsequently altering the tension in the band. It's my version of an exercise sled. I like to face the stall bars at all times and move back (or back and to the sides) as quickly and smoothly as possible. Once the tension is reasonably high enough (not so high I am in danger of snapping the band) I move back towards the stall bars under control trying to resist being pulled off my feet going forward, which feels like a real possibility at the beginning when returning to the stall bars since there's so much tension at that point. And I keep repeating, moving backwards quickly and returning forwards under control towards the stall bars for each repetition. It's super fun cardio and I can feel significant core engagement from the movement. Oh, I also love to use two same sized bands, hook both up to the top of a pullup bar, step each foot into a band and march in place. It's my version of a step master. The cool thing is the pullup bar available to me is for individual use so there are vertical columns available in reaching distance for support if the bands are strong enough to compromise my balance as I fatigue. This one is not as fun as the other one in my opinion but I do enjoy it. And because I'm probably OCD about symmetry, I usually like to switch sides so the opposite foot gets a chance to use the opposite band for each set that I do to account for differences between the bands as best as I can😆.

Bands are definitely a great tool to have on hand that you truly can use anywhere!

Another fun and informative video! I'll be trying this one for sure. As for an unconventional exercise, I like to crawl around on the living room floor. I read somewhere that it's a good way to test a person's overall fitness, and was surprised to find it a tad challenging in my late 50's. Now, I try to remember to add it in to my daily movements. The cats always find it intriguing that I'm down on their level 😁 which makes it fun.

i take a pvc pipe about 5 to 6 feet long. fil it with sand put a few drops of soap in it. then fill it with water for exxtra weight. i capp the ends and tape them shut . i use this pipe for conditioning and strength training. hold the pipe at one end with both hand extend the hand down the pipe for less stregnth needed. retract the hnad close to the other hand for additional strength needed. there is various movent patterns that work wel. the shovel up. works great forr a core and shoulder bicept work out. the swinging it like an ax works great for core shoulders tricepts in a rowing your kayak motion you can either get a good pushing or pulling work out. depending on what you empathize. aalso figure either while walking activates just about everything. thrusting the pipe forward is a great fighting move inspired pushing workout. either under hand or over hand depending on your emphasis oyu can even use a 2 or 3 foot long pipe instead and use a stair stepper to get a full body cardio only workout. using these motions or more traditional movents

Well, Cori, I did get a moving blanket. Unfortunately, no space in my home to jump around and whip it around without crashing into things. Probably not a good thing for anyone living in a home. Not all of us have gyms at home with that kind of space. My "gym" is pushed against a wall in the living room in an organized way that enables me to access things when I need them and store them neatly when I do not. Simply NO area of my house will allow me to jump around and shake this 5+ pound moving blanket. Should have thought about this before buying it.

@@redefiningstrengthOC I'm familiar with battle rope slams (both at once), usually from a squat position, and with alternating ropes either from a squat or while moving over the top of a step (and getting into a squat and out again). BTW, I'm new to your channel so maybe you've done this already, but I wish you would do a video addressing the fact that many women grossly underestimate how much they can lift. IMHO, after a year or 18 months of training, a woman who weighs, say, 135 lbs., should be able to squat 135 lbs. (counting the weight of the bar). I had a female friend who could deadlift 400 lbs---which is unusual, I grant you. But I never see women coming anywhere close to what they could be doing mainly because they don't have a clue and therefore set their goals too love. (Oh, I AM a woman, I should add, on the skinny side and 5'7".) On another point, I am 63 years old, and I never hear anyone explain that age makes ZERO difference to gaining mass (so long as you really eat enough total Kcal and loads of protein.) Forget about menopause: it's a non-issue. I lifted heavy in my 30s and then stopped and then started again last year, and the only thing that has changed is what my *bones and ligaments* can stand. But the *muscle* responds just as it did in the past. My main issue now as in the past is that I really love cardio - especially boxing - and I know full well that I am limiting my muscle gains. I did that in the past too, so I got strong-ish back then (5-6 rep squat of 165 lbs. when I weighed 150) but never as strong as friends who did less cardio. So I am trying to suppress the urge to do cardio so I can build up mass. Anyway, I said too much but I don't often hear from women who lift seriously, so I got carried away. Happy lifting!

3:22 So there is a kernel of truth to the bro science myth of spot redution? Could you link the respective studies for us?
@redefiningstrengthOC
@redefiningstrengthOC 4 месяца назад
There is! And no it isn't a magic pill. It's the 1% improvement for that last little bit. Studies below as well as an article with more and diving a bit more into the nuance of it! All about knowing our options those to tweak those systems to work better and better together. Because the more advanced we are, the more we need often little tweaks over huge changes to see results continue to build: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16985258/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38010201/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28497942/ www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/18/7/3845 redefiningstrength.com/does-spot-reduction-really-work?sl=yc

This exercise is like using battle rope.

Yes! It's a great way to get the benefits in a new way. I love using both as this does allow for a bit more circling and freedom in movement while adding in diversity with battle ropes rainbows, side lunges with alt. arm wave, reverse lunge and stage coach...Two great things to combine!

How often do you work out and how long do you work out?
@redefiningstrengthOC
@redefiningstrengthOC 3 месяца назад
Depends on my schedule at the time and even my goal for that progression. I've done 3 days a week and 30 minutes, up to 6 days a week and just under an hour. I design for the time I have but also don't just make a workout longer because I have the time. Everything we include should have a purpose. And too often we only see our workouts as a chance to burn calories or do more. But honestly, focusing on moving well and building muscle (and a schedule we can be consistent with) pays off far more whether our goals are aesthetic or functional fitness than trying to force an unrealistic routine.

LOVE battle ropes too and yes, it is a great way to use similar techniques without the rope. I actually love doing BOTH in 1 minute endurance interval work as you can do ropes with even lunge variations and then move into this...even combined with some rower and bike!

OK, this does seem like a good, (silly), exercise, but it requires space, I can't do it inside my condo, I'll either knock over all my pics, lamps, or break something. 😄

Yeaaa probably not the best in a tight space but you could easily take it outside ;-) Just go on a picnic but do a premeal cardio workout with shaking that picnic blanket out before! 😝
