Hey legends! Thanks for watching me ramble about some ideas I had in this position. Grab your guitar and slow some of this stuff down to get your fingers around it! The full pentatonic lick is at the end (with TAB)!

Why are you trying to show off your speed instead of playing clearly... its a lesson.. not a performance... grow up
@troydownwardmusic

@@servethesongs hi Taylor, it’s a bit of both in this case. I’m inspired by those fast phrases that Joe plays, and the demonstration throughout was to make this point. It then led to the last lick that I go through slowly and provide the TAB on screen (you didn’t get that far?) If you’d like some more note by note lesson type licks and explanations, I have some other videos that go through in more detail. This was just a quick off the cuff video for fun! I’ll even link it here to save your time - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E_4_ryXOZqg.htmlsi=tot60_SYQJ32RZLO

Great Job Troy !! I'm glad I checked this video out. .I've been playing guitar for over 45 years. Being self taught, it's been hard to shake my old and bad playing habits. Watching talented and dedicated players like you, has challenged me and boosted my abilities. . even at 60 plus years old. Thank you for the inspirational lesson !. . and BTW, thanks for keeping it short. I find many players go on for too long.

I often wondered how the ascending runs were able to be played so fast. It's easy as heck to descend with speed yet the other way seemed a lot more work. I was trying alternate picking, economy picking and struggled figuring out how to make it happen smoothly. UNTIL I noticed the hybrid picking done by most players, including you. This is a game changer for speed in both directions. Easy to implement and makes those ascending runs effortless. Awesome lick to personalize to your hearts content! Subscribed.

I love what you played and I like to use that pentatonic box as a way of shifting the box one if you are in a Dorian location you can play it instead of box 1 just for flavor. I hope that makes sense. I love all the Pentatonic boxes you get me a little more hooked on 5 and this is 3. 2 is more of an old school box. Everyone uses one. 4 is one of my favorites when I'm playing it'll sound melodic when I play 4. 4 has some melodic choices I like and I'll play them in more difficult less obvious locations. I like that you name the major 3 etc It helps.

Hey Troy, I have transcribed majority of his midnight blues live performance cover except one mega lick where he connects several pentatonic boxes. It is crazy fast. I can't go past 150 bpm 16th notes or according tempo if played as sextuplets. How fast is he playing? Is it even possible to progress? I feel stuck..
@troydownwardmusic
@troydownwardmusic 4 дня назад
Hi mate. I’ve checked out a couple of his performances of this song, but it’s hard to know exactly which kick you’re talking about. There are a few where he played through some lines using a wide range (a few pentatonic boxes). It’s definitely possible to progress. I felt stuck for a very long time so don’t feel disheartened. I never practiced licks or speed to get to a certain number of notes according to bpm though. I couldn’t even tell you my ‘max’ speed, I just have no idea. It’s also very dependent on the song. In midnight blues, I don’t think he’s really locked into a subdivision (ie sextuplets etc etc), the fast phrases are more of a ‘falling down the stairs’ type thing and landing on your feet. Eddie Van Halen was a master of this on a more rock front. What I’d do is obviously learn the lick, get comfortable with his position changes, and play along at half speed, then 3/4 speed, then play chunks at full speed until you’re ready to put it together. Hope that helps! Maybe I’ll do a vid on these faster runs, Cheers

Hey Allen, definitely a quick lesson going through this scale shape. The point was to try your own phrasing in this box and see how it goes. Definitely break the last lick down into chunks, it doesn’t need to be played at speed, or in its complete form. Hope you got something out of it, nonetheless! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Ya don’t need to play it fast. It’s not any harder than a basic pentatonic box, but will feel odd, if you are only playing lead in the most commonly used ones. I would focus on the how one can connect it to the other boxes, or just playing two or three notes at a time, within that box he has tabbed. I never do the lines like he’s playing in this video, and it’s not because I can’t. I do fast runs here and there, but I don’t want to sound like Gales or Bonamassa, which is who these fast runs are very much like.
