We’ve been on a Climate Change and Health kick lately but so far, we’ve focused on the threats that our physical health faces on a warming planet. However, the looming cloud of climate change is tough on our mental health, too, and we should talk about that.

Every time I go out and the weather is a comfy 70F when it's NOVEMBER, I think "nice weather, but the world is ending" every single time

When I found out that the infamous hole in the ozone layer was getting smaller, I was kind of surprised that it wasn't a bigger deal in the news. That would have been such a morale boost for people to hear about!

1:40 and 2:53 is where I can fully relate. For example, I've always been a gearhead, enjoyed my V6 l, which I bought used with my first paychecks (mind you, I'm european, so this was quite exceptional). I would drive errands for fun. Then I had the misfortune to read one particularly good article that explained very clearly that we won't solve this one by planting some more trees, and I've realized how big a problem it was. So I've (among other things) ditched the ICE car and drastically limited my mileage by switching as much as I can to e-bike. Same goes for traveling by plane. Yes, I do have other nice things to do and places to visit, but I sorely miss the sound of a big, powerful engine under the hood. At the same time, I tried to buy a passiv-house, but covid and inflation have dealt a huge blow to my aspirations. In the meantime, one of my preferred sports, downhill skiing, has become a farce, with little to no natural snow, skiing between green fields with exorbitant costs. At that time, I was still open to having children, now I can't understand how people still want to generate them.

Hmm, not sure the "show more animated hand gestures" direction is working :p. Your natural delivery is perfect, don't force it!

The thing that would mostly help alleviate climate-related mental health - and a lot of other mental health - issues is actual action by the ones who can do so. But that's a very small number of people, and they're not very exposed to the effects right now so it won't happen. There's so much doom and gloom, and when a government announces that they're trying to do something about climate change it's always either half-hearted (net-zero, still a pie in the sky even though it's only the start of what we need) or a farce (carbon capture, carbon credits, planting trees, green fuel, etc). I think the biggest thing governments could do across the world is to actually listen to climate scientists and actually implement changes to how things work _yesterday_.

Not enough weight is given to EXTERNAL causes of mental health issues. Our society is structured in so many ways to drive people to the brink and proposed solutions never seem to include improving society. It's mind-boggling.

We're going to have to airdrop the book 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels from the sky all over the place haha.

I'm not sure more research is needed. Less about more research and more about action. Having worked in research I spend more and more time realising that we're wasting time on researching things that have little benefit. Yes maybe 50 years down the line a minor breakthrough that happens today would be useful then but I feel that we need more now. More so that the people in charge won't implement any meaningful policies at all unless it looks like they're doing something whilst also having personal gain in the background. 😅

Yeah I wish people would recognise the mental health impact of this on teenagers and young people "Why are the kids so depressed it must be social media or the hormones in the water or the lgbt activisim" 🙄 I was born in the early 2000s and I tell you the impending climate apocalypse combined with the denial and recklessness of my elders is a big part of my lifelong depression and anxiety Instagram and video games could never compare, and lgbt activism is literally one of the only things making me feel hopeFUL not hopeless

Interesting how that survey pretty much unanimously focused on populations living in developed nations. Try asking the starving kid in Congo if climate change is a trigger of anxiety for him, and then we’ll talk.

I agree. I’ve been saying since I was a teen that it would be cruel to bring children into the world now and have them live in torture half their lives. And of course the data shows that Americans aren’t worried even though they’re causing it… they believe their TV’s

It just amazes me how people are willing to call for mandates to control climate change that affect others, but don't really affect them. The thing that I would love to see forced on others that wouldn't really affect me is to make it harder to spend money you don't have. Roll banking regulations back to the 70's other than the stupid gender specific ones. Actually that would affect me, it would make it a whole lot easier for me and everyone else trying to live within their means to be able to do so. We wouldn't be having to compete for everything with people who have been proven to spend more for the same exact goods and services when using credit than when spending money they have already earned. Just think about how many fewer jacked up diesel pickup trucks there would be blowing smoke while commuting if those people couldn't get $0 down financing and put 20+ inch wheels on their credit cards.

I am a mental health professional. By attributing stress to climate change is incredibly disingenuous. It allows governments to have control over aspects of our lives where they have no business. Stressors are a normal part of life. We can work with a person who has situational depression. But claiming Climate Change as a contributing factor in suicidal ideation is nonsense. You could say the same thing about economic depression, but no one is trying to regulate economic downturns as public health concerns. Low information viewers will buy this, but anyone with basic knowledge of psychology or counseling will know this is nonsensical.

Where do they claim stress--generally--is a fault of climate change? Stress is a natural part of life. Stress as due to climate change is not. "You could say the same thing about economic depression, but no one is trying to regulate economic downturns as public health concerns." Also just not fundamentally true. People have tried to regulate and mitigate economic downturns, at least in part because they have public health impacts. I highly doubt you're a health professional, and if you are, shame on you for having such a narrow and limited view of your practice.

Adoption is a fundamentally different experience than a parenthood granted through birth, for both the parent and the adoptee.
