The Unicorn Buck...one of the largest typical whitetail bucks ever captured on video.

One of the largest typical whitetails ever captured on film, The Unicorn Buck is truly a world class giant. I spent 52 consecutive days hunting this buck in Illinois. Although I wasn't able to harvest him, I was fortunate enough to have seen him 4 times and got a total of 28 minutes of footage. He truly taught me the way of the big deer woods and for that, I owe him a lot....it was an honor.

We didn't have a Unicorn Buck. Ours was an Albino. He was gorgeous. No one ever shot that guy. Bad luck. But a sign of good luck for the hunter to fill his freezer for the winter. A good hunter always whispers the hunters prayer before he goes out. Gives thanks to the one who gives way so you may eat and live another day. And a good hunter who wounds a buck and he runs away, tracks that buck until he finds him.

Most people don't believe it, even long time hunters, but white tail deer, mule deer and elk can interbreed and occasionally do. They produce odd results even farther down the line until the original species dominates again.

One time a was fishing on the Mississippi and I had walked almost completely across the river to the other side. On one side their was a power plant and the other was a protected agriculture site for the University of Minnesota. I had walked to the agriculture side and it was a high steep bank. Right in front of me 4 giant bucks came out of the woods and stood side by side on the edge of the bank looking at the river. They all had perfectly semmetrical racks and the leader had the biggest rack. It was so perfect I couldn't believe it. I could not even count the points on the first one. It was literally like a perfect 20 to 30 point typical buck and the next was a little smaller until the fourth. The only thing I can tell you for sure was that the smallest one was a perfect and huge 12 point buck. They were the most perfect bucks I had ever seen anywhere, t.v, magazines, trailcams, you name it. After standing there for about 30 seconds the first one turned down river and then pranced down the edge of the bank. The others followed in quick succession. It was a bachelor group of tight nit elite superior bucks. Could not believe it, I stood there motionless the whole time, even after it happened I just sat there and thought for a while and tried to recall all the details.

I've also seen monster bucks on the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers in the Twin Cities. Was jogging about a mile and a half from downtown St. Paul and accidentally cornered a 18 pointer between the trail and the river (about 20ft away from me) and he gave out the most aggressive sneezy sound and stare down. About face, never ran so fast in my life.

Olen Hunter dude...look very closely at the deer’s forehead and see the extra pedicle....where a straight vertical 12-13” spike antler grew out of his head like a unicorn. Sometimes it’s acceptable to play on words to get a point across, and o just don’t understand why people have to be so critical and insulting about stupid things like this.
@bigbuck3216
@bigbuck3216 4 года назад
@@JakeLatendresse critical or insulting? he admitted he could be the one confused - UniCorn means One Spike - and YES - you have to look very closely to see anything that would conjure a "Unicorn" reference - and that deer is screened by brush and almost always broadside profile angle of the rack - would have never thought anything remotely close to "Unicorn" unless you said something - a horrible misleading name you gave that buck - just a 5 second explanation for the name"Unicorn Buck" in the beginning should have been given - find something else to do - you guys are bad at this .

mark rigsby --- Why would you shoot some deer that was that Great? --- The Greatest thing about a mature buck is that he's already passed on his genetics to at least 5 - 10 years worth of Fawns . Every January / February during the early thaw (usually) these whitetail deer lose their antlers and every late summer they grow a new set for the fall . Truth is a young buck doesn't grow a massive amount of antler only mature bucks produce that much . Mature bucks also have more meat on their skeletal structure , the True purpose behind Hunting is food . Hunting is enjoyable and it also keeps the genetics from bottle necking . You don't want the same 1 buck breeding year after year for 5 - 10 years straight , you'll eventually have degraded deer . I've seen people who didn't manage their cattle properly and the bull bred his own offspring , the results were sad . The same thing happens with sheep , goats , horses , dogs , etc ,. Every where there was whitetail deer there used to be wolves , with the majority of large predators in decline or extinct in these modern areas , there's no real way to manage the wild prey species to keep a healthy dispersal in place .

Noooooo, that's why WE hunt with a bow.. What's the matter, not up for the challenge of doing it the "hard way'? I understand, for just the reason you pointed out, not all gun hunters make good bowhunters. It's hard for them to grasp the level of patience required to wait for a clean shot. With a gun, theres no need waiting for proper body angle or, here's the toughest one, holding off on an extremely alert deer. That sort of patience is beyond the scope of most gun hunters.

David Donohoe there's no question, I made that mistake. I had so many trail images of him on the trail closer to the edge and even in the creek bottom beneath me...so I elected not to trim out in the thicket. GMO corn and other vegetation can cause this defect. In the past 15 years I have seen 3 stories of big doe deer having huge antlers! @@JakeLatendresse Of course he can't see that, he's still behind the power curve when it comes to comprehension. Couple that with his moderate to heavy consumption of lead-based paint chips and there isn't much of a chance of him advancing into the double-digits on the I.Q. chart. Beautiful video, it's a crying shame that it wasn't you that got to harvest that monster, but you got some amazing footage, and that will last way longer than the meat he would have added to your freezer!
