What a fascinating place this was! The New Town Hall in Hannover, Germany is quite an impressive place both outside and in. I was staying in Hannover anyway and decided to pop down to the New Town Hall after watching the Tom Scott video on its quirky and unique elevator. On the way I enjoyed the streets and some of the buildings of this lovely city and once I'd gone inside the Town Hall, well, it was certainly impressive!
Join me on this trip and I'll show you all the sights and sounds plus a full-length video of the actual trip in the elevator and I was quite priveleged on the day to be able to have it all to myself. I'll tell you how to get there, how much it costs, when it's open and what you can see on the way (and how to see it!). A bit of a departure for me with this video but I've had a few requests for me to film some of the places I see when I'm off on my travels. I hope a few of you can come along with me and please let me know if you enjoy this style of video. I may make some more!
Thanks as always guys for watching and supporting the channel. It is very much appreciated.
Cheers for now.
Mark

Like most people I have passed through Hanover on the train when travelling between Berlin and Amsterdam. I visited the Hartz Mountains on a school trip back,in 1993 and did travel on one of the steam railways you mentioned. Hanover looks a nice rebuilt city and certainly the view from the new town hall,looked great and for a low price. I always try and find a viewing point if the price is right when visiting any city, This week I went up relatively new 120 Fenchurch Street in London which gives fantastic views of the City and it’s free.
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip Месяц назад
Oh I might try that 120 Fenchurch St next time I’m in London - especially if it’s free! I’m the same, always on the lookout for a view point in the city. 👍

That’s the one. Yes I really enjoyed that - a great way to spend some time looking around the city AND free. I think I did most of it ending up at some monument on the top of a hill iirc? Great city Boston, I’ll definitely be back one day, I need to see the green monster!

For the plaque at 3:50 - in short, they started building the church in 1347 on the site of an early romanesque chapel, the tower was built in 1717. (I guess they assume, everybody understands the bombing was related to WWII due to the date.) Since 1952 the ruins are a memorial for victims of war and violence. And for the elevator, Tom Scott concluded his video by: for a video about an elevator ride, that was a lot of steps. :D
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip Месяц назад
Yes watching the Tom Scott vid inspired me to do this. I wish I had a few of his views! 😂 They we’re doing some work in the church inside and there’s also a statue in there which is in the video (though I forgot to mention it). An interesting place Hannover for sure 👍

Interesting video again Mark, Hannover looked nice with some pedestrian areas and I thought having ‘red lines’ to help tourists to see the major attractions a very good idea. Very impressive town hall which certainly does have a quirky and unique elevator. Great scenery from the top with lovely views. 😊

As a fluent German-speaker (my maternal grandmother hails from Güthersloh, Rheinland Pfalz Germany) it is great that you visited a place which is still related to the British Crown. Next time you come to Malta, speaking of elevators, I will take you to the panoramic lift from the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta to the Valletta Waterfront and Lascaris Quay (return fare €1). Anyways seems that you've had a lovely time. Keep up with the good content. I am planning to return to Shrewsbury asap
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip Месяц назад
Cheers Enrico, yes I’ll definitely take you up on that if I return to Malta (hope so). I’m so glad I took some time to explore Hannover and the elevator was the icing on the cake. 👍

It is interesting to see Hannover as I only really know it from changing trains there and going to meetings. My town, Bielefeld, has an Altes Rathaus (late medieval and now used as a theatre), Neues Rathaus (built a few years before Hannover's) and a Modernes Rathaus (built in the 1970s and where the staff work - sort of like a Civic Centre) It seems to have been a common pattern for the industrial towns of Northern Germany.
@LetsMakeaTrip
@LetsMakeaTrip Месяц назад
Thanks John, I’m certainly no expert when it comes to these but I’d heard of the elevator from watching Tom Scott’s video so had to give it a go. The other buildings en route and the town hall itself just made it all the more interesting. I’d definitely go back.

Mark, now you're going to be doing a circumnavigation of Europe's elevators! If you do, make sure you do the glass elevator on the building which houses the Italian unknown soldier in Rome. Right on Piazza Venetia at the end of the Fori Imperiali. Stunning 360 views of Rome - including Sophia Loren's apartment!
@LetsMakeaTrip

I don’t think there’s much call for me to do many more tbh 😂 but I had a good time and the point really was to share it with anyone who was interested so I hope it’s enjoyed just for that. Cheers mate 😊

@@LetsMakeaTrip based on views/likes? If I may make an observation... you missed the key word out of the title: Germany. Imagine how many more searches are done on Germany than Hannover...? Just a thought.... Personally, I think it's much more interesting - the trip getting there is one thing, but things you can do and see when you get there make it a journey and story combined.
