I have had my eVscope for over a year as I was one of the beta testers. There were a couple things in this video I cringed at a little. I would hesitate to say that the image quality of only a few minutes is as good as something an astrophotographer can do with multiple hours of integration time. I really wouldn't say that this is good for astrophotographers or anyone even remotely interested in astrophotography either. That being said, I do love my eVscope. It is a fantastic grab and go device. I can set it up in less than five minutes and be looking at deep sky objects. Setting up my other telescopes on EQ mounts and my dob take me at least 20-30 minutes and then I still have to do a polar alignment (for EQ) and a star alignment. It wasn't mentioned in the video, but the eVscope is a great tool for public outreach as well. You can show people what is really out there. Unless you have extremely dark skies and a huge aperture scope, the average person will never be able to see nebula with any sort of significant detail. With the eVscope you not only get those details, but you also get the true color of those objects. On top of all this, you have a scope that can connect to a network and be used for citizen science projects.

This telescope is not geared for those who plan on taking professional APOD award-winning images. This scope will not do that. This scope is targeted to those that simply just want something east to put outside, push a few buttons and view with their family and friends and start viewing the night sky. A telescope like this takes away from the astrophotography growing pains we all have to go through. And yes you are completely right that these are perfect for outreach. Thank you very much for your insight.

What is the sence of an eyepiece if the Photons from the nebula don‘t directly hit your eye? It’s just a weird way of looking at processed images.

@OPTTelescopes

Think of it like a mirrorless camera, it's basically an electronic viewfinder that has automatic stacking capabilities allowing you to see more than you normally would with a regular eyepiece. Some people prefer looking at an object through a regular lens eye piece and there is obviously nothing wrong with that, this just gives a little more details, colors, and options for those who want it.

@rjones1138
@rjones1138 3 года назад
Dave, some images may look blurry because of focus. And the sensor is small. This really shines as a visual tool - just taking it out and in 10 minutes seeing color DSOs through the eyepiece. It really is a game changer. If you only see the photos, it does not do it justice. The wonder of seeing M27 in color in 3 minutes from setup is just astounding.

I have never had to collimate mine. Focus is very easy but would be nice to have autofocus. The eyepiece view is fantastic - see the discussions about this at Cloudy Nights. The tripod is not flimsy - I have had mine for almost a year. Great tripod. The sensor does a great job - there are gain and exposure controls. You can add filters although a but tough to do. It is not great for planets or moon - you still need a little refractor. And there is not a lot of expandability - true. But I have now seen almost all of the Messier catalog in less than a year - in color and with so little fuzz. Just amazing. All my friends want one. They never ever ever not once wanted one of my other scopes that showed gray fuzzies or nothing at all.

Hi ..Nice review. I wanted to know how is the experience while looking through the eyepiece? Does it feel very 'digital' I.e. looking at a screen or it gives a reasonable experience of looking through a normal eyepiece. I want to buy this but it is bugging me that the feel of eyepiece might not be very natural. I am more into visual astronomy rather than astrophotography
@OPTTelescopes
@OPTTelescopes 3 года назад
There is a difference between the image of looking into the digital eyepiece and through a regular eyepiece. They are very different especially in the amount of detail that you see. BUT, you are looking at a live image through a telescope in the moment so that in itself gives the natural feel of astronomy.
@himanshumathur166
@himanshumathur166 3 года назад
@@OPTTelescopes Thanks a lot...Ya, I guess it's better to look at a live image being generated at that very moment than nothing at all. I have a 8 inch Dob. but live in an extremely light polluted area so can't see almost none of the deep sky objects even as 'white-fuzzy blobs', and difficult to take the dob out to remote locations...Not much practically possible for me; so I am looking for something like evscope...It's the easy way out, I know, and most of the astronomers would scoff at it; but I think it's the only way for me to gaze at DSOs .... So, this just hit the market in the UK via First Light Optics (FLO) who are arguably the biggest astronomy retailer in the UK and one of the biggest in Europe. Takahashi Well, this is exactly what this product video is doing haha, it’s comparing it to give perspective. Takahashi are generally in their own league and sure, the accessories to get the Tak will set you back closer to the £5 - £6K mark. Those who are looking at a sleek all-in-one unit, that is essentially a rich folks toy (and some small outreach groups toy), will happily go and drop £3200 on something if they’re told Takahashi are THE BEST and highest end. People buy into names and prestige when it gets into the higher price range of things. I mentioned further down as a reply to someone that the problem is that this product is going for mass market convenience, when astrophotography and astronomy as a whole isn’t mass market. This probably should have been pushed towards the outreach crowd. The niche hobby that astronomy is, can be quite elitist and has some snobbery behind it, the other end is also the bang for buck people want. This is literally the opposite of that. This could also have the opposite effect of being a hobby killer for some with the expectation that they will get images they see online, no matter if it’s not marketed that way. When they realise they need a big EQ mount and the rest.. it’ll put them off and stick this in the spare room. ZWO changed the whole industry when they started pushing out stupid value for money parts and mass market cameras. That’s EXACTLY what the astronomy community wants and needs. To make astronomy mass market, you need to lower the overall price vs one big lump sum price and education ultimately is the way forward. With all of this said, I do applaud the innovation, engineering and design that has gone into this to make it a single package. That is much more effort than just bolting things together and we should give credit where it’s due - these things drive progress forward and force innovation in other astronomy companies and ultimately the technology often makes it way into other markets you don’t expect to see it in.

We agree!. While normal telescopes will thankfully always be around, and the standard way of imaging will be a thing for many many years to come, automation and simplicity of use will be more common. Us as a company wants to make astrophotography and astronomy as easy and accessible as it can be for people to enjoy. As of now, it has a pretty steep learning curve once you get into the tech side of it. All in 1 package like this help flatten the learning curve a bit and make it easier for people to see the night sky. :)

Its a neat concept where the camera is live stacking the target and building up the image in the "eyepiece" for viewing. However it is total nonsense to suggest that a 2 minute image of M27 is better than 5 hours integration time with standard astrophotography gear. That is a total misrepresentation of the product. No way will 2 mins integration time be better than 5 hours ! I have achieved far better results on M27 with 30 mins integration time than your M27 image in the video.
