Thankyou for a very good, frank and honest review. These new smart scopes are a real game changer on the few brief clear nights we get here in the UK. Assemble, power up, level, calibrate and off you go. In a few minutes you can evaluate what you’re getting and off you can go back in the warm whilst it autonomously performs its imaging run. And, if the cloud rolls in again you can easily call it a night and bring it back in again in minutes. I still love my older gear and the ritual of setting up, aligning and all that, but these new scopes really come into their own in how quick to set up and portable they are. Great for travel, holidays abroad, or outreaching with folks that have never used a visual telescope beforehand.

Very cool review! A flaw I see in all smart telescopes is the alt az design, I wish a company would design one with an eq mount. Also, with the price tag at over 4k for this kind of money you could get a whole setup with harmonic drive mount etc. so I wonder what about this is worth the money in the eyes of the Unistellar team.

In the USA this scope is $4875.00, or after tax over $5,000.00. My new Seestar S50 is doing as good or better a job than this scope. The resolution is almost 4x’s better than the S50 but it does not show in your examples. Thanks for the review and saving me $4500 dollars.

@pilsplease7561 - I kind of agree. My friend just got a Seestar. He sent me several pictures of long exposure images. The stars were way too fuzzy for me. I think I'd pay 10 times as much for 4x resolution.

Completely agree with your review and the rating, you just read my mind throughout the video haha . I guess 8MP is a plus compared to the other options, only if it was around 1K. The eye piece isn't really a plus in my opinion since it's just a screen, why would anyone look through there when you see the exact same thing on the phone. If it was a regular eyepiece you kind of get to see the natural view along with the bright view on the app.

Just done the maths, my rig cost less. second hand heq5 and second hand redcat51, zwo533mcpro, zwo120mini, asiair mini, l extreme filter and a power station, for a little over 3k gbp. with practice, it takes me less than 15 min to set up at a dark site. Granted these smart scopes are plug and play, but i wonder if they will leave people wanting more after a couple of months ( if clouds play ball ). The advantage of a mount and OTA, is that you can change the OTA or camera, for a different field of view

Great review and I totally feel the same. I have both evscope equinox1 and seestar s50. I use equinox for clusters and seestar for nebulas. I kinda regret buying evscope now (It was 1,999 USD) but oh well, there wasn't seestar back then. :/ My guess is that nobody will want this over priced gear even in second hand so it will be my buddy for the rest of my life with no choice. So my best usage out of it will be set it as a gear designated for clusters while seestar points out nebula and I'd be playing around with my dob and binos.

Hi, could you help us find where you spotted that overly detailed image of the crab nebula? It is indeed too detailed and we'd like to remove it. Normally this shouldn't have passed our publication filter but sometimes creators are a bit "stubborn" or do not understand why some details are important (they don't understand why crab nebula cannot be as beautiful as Orion for example, so they forget to correct the content or upload the wrong version without noticing).

This is on the level of what I get with a DSLR, cheap mechanical tracker and vintage telephoto lens. So about 1k total. Meaning the other 3k are for the convenience of auto-stacking, GOTO, etc. Definitely not for me, but I understand the logic behind it, although the marketing is despicable.

These « old » smart telescopes were decent before ZWO released the Seestar. With my Seestar, in a Bortle 9 sky, I’m taking way better pictures and it costs 10% of the price. I like what they did with the eyepiece, in a way, but this is WAY too expensive for a beginner astronomer. At this point, just buy a Seestar for nebulas, and ask your local shop to give you a « planet buster scope », like a 6in Celestron SCT. It’s better to see clouds on Jupiter than a soft grey spot in the sky in my opinion.

Excellent review. The real killer is Jupiter and Saturn. Probably the 2 most viewed objects (not counting the moon, which I’m surprised you didn’t include in your review) people want to see in a telescope. I’d be embarrassed to show those planets to anyone with that telescope. Especially one the goes for over $4K. An inexpensive 90mm or 102mm refractor would give better quality views for less than 1/10 the cost. I’ve got a Celestron 102mm Star Sense refractor which I just checked can be bought for under $400. and when used with your smart phone gives you a simple way to find objects in the sky, and very nice views of Jupiter and Saturn, even the Orion Nebula. Again, excellent review. Thanks for the post. 👍🏻🍻😎

I my opinion bit of a scam....sorry to say that :( To get people interested in the wonders of the universe let them first watch a crescending moon with a simple ( but good quality ) 90-102mm refractor and a decent eyepiece, I will never forget the reactions of many people 😉, than show them Jupiter and Saturn on a quit night with little to none air turbulence, priceless. Those 2 planets are priceless! Than show them some more easy starclusters like the 7 Sisters, and maybe on a good night the vague silhouet of Andromeda! I live in the Netherlands and we do not have that many good nights. But showing people the night sky with logical steps ( moon -> planets -> star clusters -> galaxy ) will make them understand what size and distance means for the visual eye. Astrophotography for me, maybe in the future but I really like visual observing. With refractors and bigger reflectors as well, to find and see the faint nebulas/galaxies is so cool.

I’ve got the Seestar S50. My Galaxy and Nebulae images are much better in the Seestar than what you showed. The planets are pretty close as I get 2 bands on Jupiter. I do have better skies in Maui but I’m close to a major street so there is still lots of light pollution. And of course price makes this no contest.

@Teeb2023 5 месяцев назад
For £4 grand? No chance. Not worth it. I get the attraction of the whole plug-n-play setup, but there are far too many cons in terms of light gathering and raw optical capability that a similar (albeit less approachable) traditional scope + camera setup can attain. As others have mentioned, there's nothing here that gives the user the 6x price premium over the competition in terms of quality of result. Also, it bothers me that they've had a typo on their main product page for some time now. When your product lists a mirror as its primary optical component, it helps if you can spell "mirror". :-/
