The Mordant Altars were said to have been created by an artisan of unparalleled skill. So just who could have been the man behind their creation?

"Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. But Crom is your god, Crom and he lives in the earth. Once, giants lived in the Earth, Conan. And in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered. And the Earth shook. Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. Theory: The Mordant Altars are active parts of an advanced large STC unit from the Dark Age of Technology, maybe even older. Together they're able to construct something as large as required, they were deliberately disassembled and given out to the Iron Hands to ensure no one agency would have access to such a powerful artifact. Its quite possible the STC was the core unit as used by the Emperor during the unifying wars on ancient Terra. This would make the Unknown Artisan the Emperor, indirectly, and obviously the legend regarding it "breaking" is not literal but symbolic, i.e. each part of the whole unit was disconnected and still works, but is unable to reproduce items of size and complexity as it could do as a whole.

I think that maybe it was a high ranking Magos of the Adeptus Mechanicus who turned traitor, or did some sort of techno heresy and was excommunicated. They could order give cities to go dark because they were in a position to give such orders, and would likely have the time and the drive to work on a special forge to make special wargear.

They're closer to the Adeptus Mechanicus than most chapters. | 2:40 - They're also ruled by a council of Iron Fathers, a mix of Chaplin and Techmarine. | 6:16 - Filthy Frank? | Vulkan sounds like the most likely candidate as he had a history of that. | 9:20 - KHAN!!! (Echoes) | 10:48 - Pretty boy? I can understand why. | 11:30 - His legion replaces flesh with cybernetics as well, although in their case, it's to get rid of chaos mutated parts, which they consider abhorrent. (although they're fine with those that become Daemon Princes) | I'm not sure if the 40K version of Bane would appreciate that, although Big Papa Ultrasmurf might with his. | 12:45 - As in those who had it worse than the traitor legions, as at least they were reviled in at least some circles, if the Inquisition knows about them, they're not talking...Big Papa Ultrasmurf and Sanguinius would definitely know about them. | The records were stricken sometime after the Lion was found.

I think the originator being one of the lost/purged Primarchs that made the original Anvil that split into those Alters makes a lot of sense. Durring the "Cleanup" after those legion were disbanded, the fragments of it could have been given to the iron hands, since they are arguably greater craftsman and smiths than even the Salamanders. The Emperor and Malcador worked very hard to wipe the records of those lost primarchs from imperial history, but at the same time, didn't waste their astartes, letting them be reabsorbed into the Ultramarines and Imperial fist, so it may be that those legions resources were divided among the remaining 18 as well. Speculating on the motivations of the emperor is a fools game, but it seems like striking them from records, and hiding evidence of them existing was less out of spite towards them, and more out of grief, so I don't think he would go so far as to destroy everything they once owned.
@MagnussenDK
@MagnussenDK 5 лет назад
Could it possibly be aquired from Necrons? They are after all a mechanical race, and it could be connected to the void dragon in some way, so that it requires devotion to be used. That might also explain, why its origin was removed from records, as nobody wanted to answer a question of why they are using Xenos tech.

One Theory you didn't give was the possibility that the alter could have been forged by a Xeno instead of a Human, There are at least two races active with the ability to forge such a artifact, The Eldar and the Necron. While the idea of Humans, and especially the Mars Tech Priests, working with a Alien to create something would be outright Heresy/Outlandish there is plenty of evidence of events where such races have teamed with Humans to repair or reactivate some form of technology for a greater purpose. For the Eldar there are many who still Worship the lost Eldar God Vaul The Smith God, making it possible for a Eldar Smith to be the one to had forged the Armor and broke the alter from its heavy use, while the Eldar in general dislike humanity theirs still a silent acceptance that Humanity has the potential for great things. If it was a Elder who was Forge Master it would be easier for him/her to pass as a Human given Tech Priests generally keep there bodies cloaked and thus unseen or the Tech Priests just ignored who the forge master was and were more interested in what was being made. Thus it could be explained as the records erased as the idea of it being publicly known that a Xeno had used human technology to create something, and do a better job at using human tech then humans, it would cause a large backlash in the Tech Priest Religion let alone how the Space Marines react to almost worshiping a alter crafted by Alien Hands. Don't have much of a idea for why a Necron would make it though theirs been a few examples of some eccentric Nercon Personalities so the possibility of a odd Necron finding human tech amusing and wanting to mess with it, and creating great works in the eyes of humanity, until some later date in which he left or was destroyed.

That's an interesting idea to play with seeing as how it was Ferrus Mannus who gave the altars to the various clans. And I don't think Fulgrim would have been likely to make the hammer, then hold onto it for a decade to make the armour, when he and Ferris were supposed to have swapped the weapons fairly soon after making them seeing as how they were made as part of a 'friendly' competition.

From the Vaults of the Blood Ravens: A vox recording of the mad primarch, Konrad Curze of the VIII Legion (believed recorded near end of the Horus Heresy). "They tell me terror and psychological tactics don't work on Adeptus Astartes, as they have that 'Know No Fear' thing going for them. I proved them wrong, and I didn't need Lorgar's warp farts he befriended to do so. "Find an Iron Hand, if there's any of them left these days; they kinda fell apart after Ferrus Manus volunteered his skull for Emperor's Children polo matches. Then start tossing EMP grenades at them. They get more panicky and useless than Rogal Dorn in charge of storming a spaceship. Got the idea when I saw some of the Night Lords getting their kicks harassing some tech priest that wasn't getting the jobs done, and one of them noticed a crate of 'haywire grenades.' I would've done more with those grenades making the Iron Hands go haywire at Istvaan, but then I got the rare chance to upstage that emo loser Corax -- and Lorgar. Pathetic losers copying my styles, the both of them."

What of the 2 expunged primarchs.

Or, it could be that altar that iron hands made for their dead primarch robot hand effigy or something that infuriates vulkan so he smashed it. 🤔🤔

I thought that the effigy of Ferrus was seated upon a throne, not an altar?
@kathev9050
@kathev9050 3 года назад
@@40KTheories it was. But vulkan smash it. Who knew what that shady cyborg iron hand did after vulkan left, turn it into altar maybe? After all that cyborg betray and left shandrak meduson to die. Think about it. Is it posibble that mordant altar actually exist when ferrus is around, given his nature?

The armor was cut by Fireblade, something that Ferrus made himself using his Necrodermis arms and such have enhanced abilities compared to if it were made using human technology alone, even if with the skill of a primarch.

I really don't understand how the IH were allowed to do some of this shit. It seems like they are trying correct or improve the emperor's designs
